In this edition of the Subie Scoop I talk about changing out my CV axles on my Crosstrek with the help of my son.
[00:00:10] Hey everybody, welcome to another edition of the Subie Scoop. It just switched over from Wednesday, March 19th to Thursday, March 20th. So it's midnight and I'm up late doing voiceover stuff before I started recording this. And I'm already up, so I decided to just start working on this.
[00:00:33] But I was watching and chatting with a guy who is recording an audition for a book that he is narrating with another person. So it's like a duet. So it's him and a woman and they're narrating this book together. So I'm learning a lot on this journey already. And I've also been watching some YouTube videos on voiceover stuff.
[00:00:57] I, so I just need to learn how to use some of the stuff that I have. And then once I can do that, then, then I'm ready to go. And what I mean by use my stuff is I downloaded a program called Reaper. It's a DAW, which is a digital audio workstation.
[00:01:17] And Reaper is, has a lot more features and a lot more capability and a lot more power than GarageBand, which is what I've been using for the entire time that I've been podcasting. I've been using GarageBand this whole time. And of course, it works great. It works great for the podcast. But getting into voiceover, you need something, you know, absolutely have to have it. But it's better to have something that is a lot more powerful and going to give you a lot more features.
[00:01:45] And that will also accept plugins because there's all sorts of things that you can, there's all sorts of audio processing that you can do. And it's kind of preferred whenever you are, especially if you're doing like an audio book. And so, so I'm learning a lot and there's still a lot more to learn. And I need to, again, learn how to use my, my new program Reaper. But I'm not really here to talk about all that.
[00:02:12] I was just mentioning that because that's why I'm up so late. But what I'm here to talk about is changing out my axles on Pearl. Pearl. So I was driving to work one day, driving into the parking lot. And it turned, I have to go left and right just to get into it because there's a lot just, it's not a straight shot in. So I'm turning in and I hear clicking.
[00:02:41] And so I messaged some people and I was like, hey, what does it mean when you turn sharp and you hear clicking noise? And they said, your axles are growing. So I bought new axles and I ended up changing them out on Sunday at my cousin's house with my son. And we both put in a fair amount of work. I mean, it was probably like 50-50 of us, you know, doing it together.
[00:03:11] And it was a lot of fun. Like, that kind of stuff, you know, I see people like Milton and Kerry and just another. I mention them because they're the ones that I see doing it the most. I know other people do it too. But I see them like just changing out axles, changing out lower control arms, all this other stuff just on the trail.
[00:03:35] You know, they're out trailing, they break something, they have extra parts with them, and then they just change it out. And I've just always thought that would be, I always felt so intimidated by that because I felt like there's no way I would ever be able to do that kind of stuff. There's no way I'd ever learn how to do that. But I did it. I bought the axles and I bought them through OEMSubaruParts.com.
[00:04:01] And I watched some YouTube videos on how to change out the axles. And I was thinking, okay, that doesn't really look that hard. It doesn't look as intimidating as I thought it would be. And so I watched like three different videos. And then, of course, we get there and I watch them again that same day before I went to my cousin's house just to have a refresher. And everything was exactly how the video is set.
[00:04:31] And, you know, I mean, the hardest, I thought the hardest part was going to be breaking the bolts loose that are on the suspension so that I could drop down the rotor and brake assembly and all that so that I could pull the axle out. But the nuts actually came off or the bolts came off pretty easily, thankfully. And so the hardest part was getting, well, it wasn't really getting the axle out. It wasn't hard because once I, well, so, okay.
[00:05:01] So I was watching the video and I ended up, you know, you have to like break the axle loose at the transmission from underneath. And I was like, I can't get to it because my skid plate is in the way. So I had to take my transmission skid plate off. And anyway, so I did that. And then I ended up, you know, breaking the axle loose and we pulled it out and everything.
[00:05:28] But like trying to get the axle like out of the rotor and and the brake assembly and everything, just trying to get it out of the hub. That was kind of difficult. And then getting the new axle back in, getting the axle to pop into place of the transmission, like that was a little difficult.
[00:05:52] We had a rubber mallet and we, you know, hammered and hammered and pushed at the same time and we got it to pop in. So that wasn't too bad. But then getting it, the tip of the axle into the hub assembly, that was, that was a little difficult. And that was really the hardest part. But and then like I went inside to do something.
[00:06:15] I came back out and Luke was under the car, had already taken out the old axle and was putting the new axle in. And I was like, that's really cool. I was really impressed that he had done that. I mean, because we both did the other side. So it's not like he didn't, you know, he knew how to do it already. But it was just really cool seeing him do that. And it was a lot of fun doing that together and being able to like share that moment and do work on my car together.
[00:06:45] Because then like if he ever has any issues with his, then we'll be a step ahead on, you know, learning how to do something with his car. So it was a fun process. But so I got the new axles in and driving home and I still hear the same sound. But so apparently, I guess I don't know what a blown CV axle really sounds like because there is a clicking.
[00:07:13] But I also feel it when I turn. And it's so it's really it's hard to describe. So I'm going to have to take a video and like set up my tripod, take a video of my car so that people can hear it. Because I have people saying all sorts of different things. And so I don't really know what to make of it. But so I guess I didn't need to spend all the money on axles.
[00:07:40] However, I'm not really upset about it because axles that I had that I took out had 123,000 miles on them. And now I have a brand new set of axles, which I feel good about. You know, I'm not upset about spending the money and learning how to do it, going through that process, doing it with my son. It was such a like really good experience. And it was a good learning experience, too. So I'm not upset that I spent that money.
[00:08:09] I don't look at it as that I spent that money for nothing because it was it was fun and it was a process. And, you know, I enjoyed it. But what I am upset about is not knowing what is actually happening. So, again, I'm going to I'm going to take a recording because I was talking to I think I was talking to Anthony, Judy the Subi. And he was saying you shouldn't feel it with your if your CV axles are blown. It should just be a clicking. You should just hear it. You shouldn't feel it.
[00:08:39] And so he thinks maybe it has has something to do with steering components or something. So I don't really know. I just want to get it figured out because I'm pretty sure that whatever it is, I can probably fix it myself. Or at least I'm hoping so, because the whole reason that I changed out my axles in the first place is because I didn't want to spend eight million dollars on labor. And, you know, I mean, if you can do it yourself, I highly recommend anybody do it themselves.
[00:09:07] And it is I mean, it was intimidating because it's like, you know, I mean, I saw how everything came apart and how everything went back together. And it was actually pretty simple. But it's still one of those things. It's like, what if I didn't do one little thing just right? I mean, it's like whenever I changed my brake pads and rotors, you know, brakes are a safety thing. So, like, what if I didn't do something right and my brakes don't work? But, you know, it's still a fun process.
[00:09:37] It's great to not do it yourself just to not have to pay the labor, but to learn more about your car. So if you can do something yourself with your car, I highly recommend doing it yourself because it's it's and there's there's so many YouTube videos out there, even if you can't find. Because, like, I haven't been able to anything that I've done on my car. I don't think I've ever been able to find an exact.
[00:10:05] Oh, this is a 2021 Crosstrek video on or how did this is how to do this on a 2021 Crosstrek. It's always like an old like a first gen Crosstrek or, you know, a 2018 or 19 Crosstrek or something like that.
[00:10:22] And and sometimes I found stuff like on an Impreza and, you know, so like all the axle videos that I found, I think two of them were on a first gen and one of them was on a second gen. So even though I couldn't find my exact year and model and everything, it was OK because it all worked out perfectly and the videos were great for it. So, you know, it's I just I highly recommend it.
[00:10:51] It's such a great thing to do and a great way to learn about your car if you can do your own work. So there's that. There are some things that are going on. And I so I was originally going to do this SubiScoop and then I was going to do another one the following week. But there is an announcement that's coming out today. So I couldn't record it earlier and make the announcement.
[00:11:15] So I'm going to do kind of like a SubiScoop 2.0 on Tuesday to make an announcement. So be on the lookout for that tomorrow on Tuesday for SubiScoop 2.0. But of course, I do have to throw some plugs in here.
[00:11:32] As a reminder, if you were on an on a previous episode, if you were a guest on the podcast and you would like to get a custom podcast decal with your episode number on it to put on your Subaru, you can go to eccentricdesigns.com and just type in like episode specific or podcast episode or something.
[00:11:56] You can just type in episode and it'll take you to the page and you can order a podcast decal and select your put in your number and you can order a podcast decal with your episode number on it. So that was something that a few people had requested and I talked to Jen about it and I said, why don't we just get that as an option on your website so that if somebody was on the podcast,
[00:12:23] they can just go on there and order it directly from the website and not have to like, you know, try to go through and do a custom order for it. So, I mean, it's still a custom because it's going to be a custom number. But yeah, so if you were on the podcast and you want a custom episode decal, then go to her website and order yours and rep the podcast and rep your episode. Of course, I can't forget about throwing out SubaruGear.com.
[00:12:52] We had Rally in that 100 Acre Wood last weekend, you know, or a couple of weekends ago by the time you listen to this. And, you know, they've got Subaru Motorsports USA branded gear and with ARA Rally going right now, it's such a great time to rep your favorite car brand and car race team, Subaru Motorsports USA.
[00:13:18] But of course, you know, there's all sorts of other merchandise there. Subaru branded merchandise. You've got all the collections, of course, the Bucky Lasset collection. So go check out SubaruGear.com. Use the code SUBIEANDU25 to get 20% off your entire purchase. And while you're there, fill up your cart.
[00:13:40] Because if your total is, if the total of your purchase is over $50 after the 20% discount, you automatically get free shipping. And free shipping is such a great benefit to ordering stuff from there. So go check it out. SubaruGear.com. SUBIEANDU25 for 20% off. And thank you so much, Subaru Gear, for sponsoring the SUBIEANDU podcast.
[00:14:08] And thank you for bringing this great offer to all the listeners of this one and only Subaru podcast. And lastly, I want to say go check out the bonus episode from a few weeks ago for Overland Expo because Subaru is going to be at Overland Expo at the remaining four events for this year. There's going to be one in Loveland, Colorado. One in Flagstaff, which is the biggest one.
[00:14:35] There's going to be one in Redmond, Oregon. And then there's going to be one in Virginia. So you can go to overlandexpo.com. You can go to the website and it'll have all the events there. You can also go to, there's a Subaru page that you can go to. I think it's just Subaru.com slash Overland Expo. And it'll also have all the dates. So I am going to be at Redmond, Oregon.
[00:15:05] At that location for sure. I already have all my travel booked for that. And then my plan is to be at Flagstaff. And then also in Virginia. So be on the lookout for those dates. If you are planning to also be there, I'll get to meet you. I know I'm going to see people that I've already met. Out in Oregon. And I might see some people that I have met in the other locations.
[00:15:33] In Flagstaff and Virginia, possibly. But I have a feeling I'm going to get to meet a lot of new people. And I'm really excited about that. That's always one of the best things is getting to meet new people. It's so great. So anyway, thank you all so much for tuning in to this episode of The Subi Scoop. And be sure that you get your car diagnosed properly.
[00:16:00] I'm not saying that anybody that told me that my axles were going out, that they were wrong. Because I just don't know what it's supposed to sound like when my CV axles are going bad. So I blame myself for not, you know, maybe recording it and having people listen to it or something. But I'm grateful for everybody that helped me along the way.
[00:16:26] And again, I'm not upset about buying new axles and not really needing them. But, you know, if somebody happens to need some axles, I've got a set of axles that came out that are original axles out of the Subi New Podcast Crosstrek. So, you know, I can sell them for really cheap if somebody needs them. So anyway, thanks again. Thanks for tuning in.
[00:16:54] And we will see you next Monday for another regular episode. For episode 199. Until then, everybody have a great week. And we will see you later. Much Subi love. Raph. F x
