In this edition of the Subie Scoop I talk about replacing the alternator in my son's 2010 Outback and drop some info about new shirts available at some retailers.
[00:00:06] Hello and welcome to another edition of the Subie & YOU!. I hope you had a great weekend and maybe went out and enjoyed your Subaru, hit some trails and just had some fun. I was able to get out and do a little bit of exploring in a spot that goes pretty much about 10 minutes from my apartment. And it's a very, very short gravel road that turns into a little bit of a dirt road, but hey, it's something.
[00:00:34] So I got out there and hit that trail for just a little bit. But I also went out there and recorded some content because I was able to partner with STAWN tire deflators and make some content for them. So that was really cool and a really cool opportunity. Also worked on some UGC projects, which was really cool. So that's been going well. But we actually had a Subaru project over last week, not over the weekend, but my son's alternator.
[00:01:02] I think I mentioned earlier, maybe in the previous Subie Scoop or maybe in regular episode. I don't remember. They all mesh together. But anyway, his his alternator was going bad. It was not producing enough amperage and volts to run all of the systems. We his battery had died and we had just bought the battery like maybe eight months prior.
[00:01:28] So we took it to the where did we take it? Oh, advanced auto parts, because that's where we bought the battery and it has like a two year warranty or something. So they checked it and the battery was dead. So they replaced it. But the alternator was reading really low in voltage and amps. And we knew that from when we bought the battery, because I think that's why his battery, his previous battery died before we bought the one that we just got replaced also.
[00:01:57] But anyway, so I was like, OK, we've got to get him a new alternator because his car was dying like when he was driving it and all of his systems were failing. So we ended up getting I ended up getting a remanufactured OEM alternator. I was looking at brand new, but they were like over four hundred dollars. And then I was looking at a couple of different brands that were recommended by people, but I couldn't find any that were not.
[00:02:25] You know, they said, like, get the gold level alternator. I can't remember the brand, but it wasn't much cheaper than brand new OEM. And they didn't have a remanufactured available in the gold. They just had like a regular one. So I'm like, you know what, I'm just going to keep looking. So I found a remanufactured OEM alternator through an online Subaru or retailer or reseller or whatever.
[00:02:50] And so we got it and it was a lot easier to replace than I thought it was going to be because I really I wasn't really paying attention to where the alternator was. And I thought it was going to be lower down in the engine or something. And I just I guess I never paid attention to Luke's engine as far as like paying attention to where the alternator was. And but it's like right up front in the center. So we just had to remove some bolts.
[00:03:20] It was kind of once we got all the bolts taken out, it was kind of hard to pull the alternator out because it's kind of clamped on to this like I guess this metal piece. So that took a while to like pry it out. But we got it out, got the remanufactured one in and his car has been driving fine. So thankfully, that was all that we needed to do for now. There are some other things that we need to do.
[00:03:46] We still need to replace the coil packs because we replace the spark plugs. But the coil packs are really expensive. And that's going to be a while before we can get all those done. He also has codes being read for the catalytic converter. And then some other stuff we know that needs to be replaced. Of course, not too long ago, we replaced the wheel hub on the passenger side.
[00:04:13] And we also need to do his brakes because his brakes are getting like the front brakes aren't too terrible, but the back brakes are pretty thin. They're definitely going to need to be replaced soon. So we don't know when we bought his car, we don't know when the brakes were replaced previously because the guy I bought it from, he actually owned it initially. And then he sold it to somebody else.
[00:04:41] Then he bought it back and then his father-in-law was driving it for a while. And so I think stuff was done to it while somebody else owned it. So he didn't really know when a lot of the stuff was done. So there's other things that we need to get done and we'll get to it eventually. But we've been kind of taking care of things a little bit, you know, here and here, here and there as they come up.
[00:05:04] But I mean, for a car that's 16 years old and has 200 or over 225,000 miles, I don't know exactly what he's at now. But for a car with that many miles, it's it's actually driving pretty smooth. So it's, you know, it's doing pretty good. And he's not having to drive anywhere crazy with it. So that's good. He does deliver food for DoorDash.
[00:05:30] So he does need his car and because he's going to school right now. So he wants something that he can just do on his own time. But he needs his car to be able to DoorDash. So as long as it's working well and it can get him to get out and DoorDash, then things are good. But other than that, not a whole lot else going on other than the new job is going well. It's I keep learning more and more and more. And they're asking me to do more, which is good because I want to do more.
[00:05:59] But yeah, that's that's been going really nice. And yeah, I look forward to just continuing to learn more and do more stuff there. Also, Pearl is very, very close to the 150,000 miles. I think I looked earlier today, I think it was at like 149, like 935 or something. So I am really, really close. And I hope that I can capture that because that's 150,000 miles is a pretty big milestone.
[00:06:28] And again, I'm still on the OEM clutch, the original clutch. So we'll see how long that thing lasts. But I definitely want to get the parts still at some point. Now that we've done gotten Luke's alternator replaced, maybe I can start looking at putting some money aside to get another clutch so that when the time comes, I can just switch it out and I'm not having to like rush to get it done or anything.
