Scott hops on the mic today to talk about his Subarus, getting out and hitting the trails, being involved with Adventure O.N.E, and some bucket list spots he would love to travel to.

[00:00:00] Hi everybody, this is Scott and you can find me on Instagram at trekachudits and you are listening to episode 181 of the Subie and YOU podcast. Hello everybody and welcome to another episode of the Subie and YOU podcast with Scott aka Trekachusetts.
[00:00:28] Welcome to episode 181. If this is your first time checking out the podcast, thank you for stopping by and giving it a listen. I'm sure if you're here today it's because you want to hear Scott's story and his Subaru journey.
[00:00:42] And if you happen to like it, go check out the other 180 episodes and there's some bonus episodes mixed in as well. So, and if this is your 181st time listening to the podcast, thank you for sticking around the entire time.
[00:00:59] Thank you for believing in me and the podcast and thank you for sharing and liking. So, appreciate all of you, even the newbies. You're all awesome. Thank you so much. Speaking of someone who's been around since the very beginning, this person has and so has this business.
[00:01:18] The Subie and YOU podcast is brought to you by Eccentric Designs. For those of you who don't know, Eccentric Designs is a small community-driven business that offers custom fit vinyl overlays for most Subaru models. This includes various designs for the rear reflectors, taillights and side taillights.
[00:01:35] I also offer fun decal designs like the popular fender stripes and stickers. To find designs for your Subie, head on over to eccentricdesigns.com. There's always more projects in the works, so be sure to follow at eccentric.designs on Instagram.
[00:01:50] Thank you so much, Eccentric Designs, for sponsoring the Subie and YOU podcast. And thank you for being such a great friend to sponsor the podcast. I really, really appreciate it. Thank you. I know I have mentioned this before, but Subifest events are underway.
[00:02:05] And the next event that will be coming up is Subifest California, Sunday, August 4th at Santa Anita Park in Acadia, California. Tickets for the event are on sale, of course. And I've had people asking me if I'm going to come out there to Subifest California.
[00:02:26] And unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to make it. Of course, I would love to go out there. I've been out there before.
[00:02:32] And I'd love to go to a lot of places, but it's just been very difficult lately with work and not having enough PTO and kind of being hard to take days off.
[00:02:42] So I do what I can when I can. But I'm also trying to save up PTO for family vacation time, because in order to travel out to Subifest California and make it worth it, I'd want to take several days off besides just the weekend.
[00:02:58] And I just I don't have enough PTO, unfortunately, to do that and save up for family vacation stuff. But, you know, maybe one of these days I'll be able to just go wherever I want to and do whatever I want to, because that would be ideal.
[00:03:11] And that would be a dream. So I'll see you all again at some point. I just don't know when yet, but I appreciate everybody wanting me to come out there.
[00:03:20] That's really, really nice. And just all the friendships that I've created because of the podcast and just within the community chatting with people. It's really nice to know that a lot of people out there care. So thank you. Thank you so much.
[00:04:33] There is another great Subaru enthusiast event that I would like to announce, and that is Subaru Flat Fest, which is coming up on Saturday, August 3rd in Madison, Wisconsin.
[00:04:46] I can't remember how many years they've been doing it now, but it's been going on for a while, I think either close to 10 years or maybe over 10 years. And of course, John Starkalination has a lot to do with this event.
[00:05:00] He is one of the event coordinators and he puts in a lot of time to make this event happen. And one of the great things is that it helps to support a couple of local charities in Madison, Wisconsin. And he is very, very passionate about that.
[00:05:16] So if you live in the Madison, Wisconsin area or anywhere, I guess within a reasonable driving distance and you haven't been to Subaru Flat Fest, I highly recommend it. It's a really great event. I went back in 2022 and I would love to go back at some point again.
[00:05:33] And or if you're far away like I am, you could always drive out there and check it out. But anyway, go check out SubaruFlatFest.com and check them out on Instagram and look for this great event.
[00:05:47] This episode is brought to you by Mele Design Firm, where they believe that quality parts should look great while adding functionality to your build. At MeledesignFirm.com, not only will you find their battery mounts, mounting systems, engine bay caps and other Mele products,
[00:06:05] you will also find products from other great brands available on the site. Mele offers products from Anderson Design Fabrication, Anti-Gravity Battery, iWire Wiring Solution, as well as products from Nameless Performance, Off-the-Line Performance and of course, Primitive Racing.
[00:06:24] So head over to MeledesignFirm.com for many of your aftermarket needs. Thank you so much, MeledesignFirm.com for sponsoring this Subie and You podcast. If you happened to see my post on Sunday, I posted because it was my daughter's birthday.
[00:06:41] And at the very end of the reel, you see her holding a Primitive Racing skid plate, which is what I bought her for her birthday. And I bought that skid plate from MeledesignFirm.com. So go check them out.
[00:06:57] If you need a skid plate, if you need some other products, go check out MeledesignFirm.com.
[00:07:03] And now we will get into this episode with Scott Trekachuset and hear all about his Subaru journey, about his build and some of the fun things that he's getting out and doing in his Crosstrek. So here we go. Hey, welcome to the podcast.
[00:07:35] And great to have you on here. Finally connect with you somewhat in person. You know, we can see each other. I know we've been chatting for a while.
[00:07:45] But one of the things that you did that I thought was really funny is whenever we were doing the trading cards and you did the one with the lawnmower. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that was hilarious. That's my bagged Honda. That's the other ride.
[00:08:01] Yeah, because I saw that like because he had a chat going for a while. When I saw that pop up, I just I thought that was really funny.
[00:08:08] Yeah, he said anybody who wants to do a lawnmower card, you know, the first person sent me a picture of you sit on your lawnmower. You know, he'll do a card for free. And I'm like, I don't have a ride on. But you know what?
[00:08:20] It'd be pretty funny if I just sat on my push mower. Yeah, it worked. You got it. So before we get started with anything else, I have to ask the most important question. And that is whether you prefer waffles or pancakes. It's pancakes. Absolutely. Yes, finally.
[00:08:37] Man, it's been like I don't know how many episodes in a row with some waffle lovers. I mean, waffles are OK, but like they are not my first, second or third choice. I mean, that's all we're having. I'll eat them. Yeah, pancakes. One hundred percent. Nice.
[00:08:53] So what is it about pancakes for you that makes them so great? Oh, they're so fluffy. I don't know. That's just the fluffiness of pancakes, especially when you make them at home. Yeah, I don't know. You melt the butter on them. I'm not huge on the.
[00:09:07] I don't like when the butter gets all stuck on like waffles, it just gets stuck in like one or two squares. Yeah, it's hard to spread it around. You'd almost have to like put little dollops in every single one. But I get that.
[00:09:19] I mean, I guess you could put some butter on the side and dip it if you wanted to. But no, I just the major downfall of waffles. Yeah, there we go. You hear that waffle people?
[00:09:29] Yeah, no pancakes are good, especially when you can get it with a really nice crisp edge to it. I really like that. That's really good. I went to a pancake specific restaurant on my bachelor party. It's called a place called Flapjacks. Nice. Up in New Hampshire.
[00:09:44] We had to go. I was like, I need to go. I got I got to get my pancakes. There you go. Man, it's nice to have another pancake guy on here. Thank you. I was looking on your Instagram profile and it says pizza place.
[00:09:55] So is that one of those things where it's like you select some sort of business or category and you decided to pick that? Yep. I pizza place is the current one. I've been so many different things.
[00:10:09] I think when I first started my account, somebody suggested that I make it like a business account because it's easier to keep track of things. Yeah. So I think I picked parking lot. Ninety five percent of the pictures I took of my car.
[00:10:21] They were in parking lots for a long time. Yeah. And then I think for a while I was a lighthouse because I got so many lights on my car. I thought it correlated. Yeah, that works out well, too. Yeah.
[00:10:33] I was also looking through and I mean, you know, you glance at people's accounts and a lot of times you just see the posts come across. And I didn't realize until last night when I was looking through your account that you have another Subaru.
[00:10:45] Do you have an Outback? I do have another Subaru. I got an Outback. Now, did you get the Crosstrek first or the Outback first? I got the Crosstrek first. I bought the Crosstrek back in March of twenty twenty two.
[00:11:00] And then I ended up just recently picking up that Outback in March of twenty twenty four. OK. And then did you buy your Crosstrek new when you bought it? I did buy it new. Yeah. OK. I had to write that down because they were not hard.
[00:11:17] They were not easy to come by when I was looking for them for some reason. So what were you looking for specifically in the Crosstrek? Like and like were you looking for that specific color, specific trim level? What is it that you were after?
[00:11:32] So I wasn't overly specific, to be honest. And originally my plan was to get a Forester Wilderness. That's why I built one online and I was going to order it. And I went through the whole process and I went and test drove it.
[00:11:48] Or I test drove a Forester. And to be honest, I wasn't thrilled with it. I don't know why. I just felt like I was driving a big bubble. I don't know how to explain it. The windshield is very big.
[00:12:02] And I was coming from a Tacoma at the time. And the Tacoma windshield is like very small. It's almost like a car. It's strange. But it was just too big for me. And I brought it back and I said, I'm not too thrilled on the Forester.
[00:12:18] What else you got? He's like, well, we have a Crosstrek base. You want to try that out? I said, all right. So me and my wife hopped in the Crosstrek base and I thought it was awesome. And it was like the right size. It was great.
[00:12:35] Yeah, I mean, I really like the size of the Crosstrek. I mean, for me, it's like, I mean, first of all, I love a hatchback. And it's not too big and it's not too small. It's like just right.
[00:12:48] And, you know, I don't, it's not like any kind of quote unquote utility vehicle for me. But just driving it around, it's, you know, it's easy to maneuver. And I like that. So did you get a base model then? Is that what you ended up with?
[00:13:02] Or is that what you? I didn't. I mean, I looked for like weeks trying to find like what I wanted. I want. So originally I did not know that there was a difference between the engine size and I think it's whatever the top tier is.
[00:13:20] Yeah, it's not the sport. One of the premiums has the 2.5. Yeah, they come with the 2.5. And then the sport comes with the 2.5. I didn't even know there was really a difference to be honest. I wasn't like, I was seriously not overly specific.
[00:13:32] I was just trying to trade in my Tacoma for fuel economy, if you can believe it. Yeah. And I just happened to, well, most of the dealerships around me I call, they didn't have one in, I'd have to order it.
[00:13:46] It was going to be a few months and I was just like, I don't really want to. And I just happened to call a random Subaru dealership. I think it's Atlantic Subaru. It's like out on the Cape Cape Cod. Okay.
[00:13:58] And I just happened to have one, a 2022 sport in silver on the lot. And he goes, we just got it. I mean, if you want to put a down payment on it, you can come look at that one. Absolutely.
[00:14:11] I put on a down to down payment and I think I took work off the next day and I just drove down there. How far of a drive was that? I think it was like 35, 40 minutes.
[00:14:22] I'm not super far from the Cape, especially in the middle of the day when in a weekday, there's no traffic. And is this your first Subaru? This is not my first Subaru. Oh, really? What have you had before?
[00:14:36] So back in 2013, I bought a brand new WRX off the lot. Once I got my first real job, I said, you know what? Let me go spend all the money I'm interested in. What drew you to Subaru in the first place like back then?
[00:14:53] Before I got the WRX, I bought a Civic Si, a six speed. I did not know how to drive manual. Best way to learn. Yeah, I bought it and then had my dad basically teach me in it. That clutch suffered.
[00:15:08] It definitely got its butt kicked a little bit the first couple of weeks, but it was really fun and I really enjoyed it. So I drove that for about, I don't know, eight months. And I knew what car I wanted after that.
[00:15:25] Like, I didn't want to buy like the car that I wanted and beat the heck out of it. So I figured I'd just buy like a learner car. My draw to Subaru comes from a long time ago.
[00:15:35] I think it was like 2004 is when I saw the first WRX. It was an eighth grade. I remember driving somewhere with my dad. He pointed it out and he goes, oh, you see that? He goes, look at the big wing on it. Oh, nice.
[00:15:48] And I came out with the STI. It was in the rally blue and it was such a cool looking car that I completely forgot about it for years. Oh, okay. My buddy picked up a WRX and I was like, oh my God, these are so cool. Yeah.
[00:16:02] And like, I have no idea how to drive stick. So I'm like, I'm going to buy, I'm going to get one of these eventually. I'm definitely going to get one. Yeah. Like you said, let me beat something else up first. Yeah.
[00:16:14] And as soon as I was confident in my ability to drive, I said, screw it. I'm going to trade in the civic and I found a WRX. Nice. That car was awesome. How long did you have that one? I had that for three years. Okay.
[00:16:32] I only got rid of it because I drove so much in traffic in and out of the city. I live about 30 miles outside of Boston and I work in Boston every day. So the commute was tough. I love the car and it kept getting hit.
[00:16:47] I felt like it was a bad luck charm. Oh, that sucks. I just kept getting side swiped, you know, not even in it, just having it be parked in parking garages or like on the side of the street, you know, at a meter.
[00:17:00] And it happened like five or six times. And I was just like, you know what, I'm going to cut my losses. And I started looking for a pickup truck. So I ended up with a Tacoma and I drove that for five years.
[00:17:13] And then I traded that in during COVID for the COVID prices. They gave me an unimaginable amount of money for my 2014 Tacoma. Yeah, I can imagine. So I bought another Tacoma in that really cool sand color. Desert sand. TRD Sport. It was so cool. I love that car.
[00:17:34] And, you know, that's when I kind of started modifying my car for off-road. I kept seeing Tacomas around with the ditch lights and like the TRD Pro grill and like the big tires. I'm like, oh, this is awesome.
[00:17:49] But then driving a truck into the city became a hassle as well. So I started looking at Crosstreks for the second time. And I stopped looking at Crosstreks once I saw the Forester Wilderness. I really wanted one in white. Yeah. I started looking at Crosstreks. I don't know.
[00:18:10] Not only just the size of the Crosstrek and the way it feels, the way it drives, but just the overall look of the Crosstrek is just the most appealing to all of the, especially all the off-road vehicles that Subaru makes. It's a perfect size SUV.
[00:18:24] Because, you know, there's so many off-road vehicles out there. They're so big and like they just keep getting bigger. Yeah. And I feel like it tackles the trail pretty well. It fits in all the tight spaces. Yeah.
[00:18:38] And so like when you bought it, were you intending and planning on, you know, having something that you could go off-road with because you were doing it with your Tacoma? And then also were you already planning to mod your Crosstrek? Absolutely not. Absolutely not.
[00:18:54] I literally bought it as a commuter car. I wanted to do all that cool stuff to my Tacoma, but you know, I looked into it and just that, you know, that platform was so expensive to do anything on. Yeah. I was like, you know what?
[00:19:11] I'm just going to get a commuter car, call it a day. So that's what I did. So then what got you into, because now you look at your Crosstrek and it's, you know, pretty heavily modded, you can say. Oh yeah, just a little bit.
[00:19:26] So I mean, I know one of your posts, you said that you bought a mom car and thought you would do a few mods. And, but you know, like you said, you hadn't planned on anything. You're just using it as a commuter car initially.
[00:19:39] So where did the, like the bug come from or where did the inspiration to be like, you know what, I'm going to start doing some stuff. And like you said, just a few things. And then now here you are.
[00:19:51] Well, it's a Subaru, so I had to put mud flaps on it. That was always in the plans. Mud flaps, yellow fog lights, because you know, JDM. Yeah.
[00:20:02] And then I went on Reddit and Reddit heavily influenced me into doing, you know, some other light mods, you know, like put a basket on it. It looked cool. I ended up buying like a new grill for it.
[00:20:15] I got a custom mesh grill and I started doing all that stuff real, real hot and heavy from when I bought the car in March until about May. And then that's when I actually started my Instagram.
[00:20:27] It was like right after I got the car, because you know, I was on Reddit and people were like sending me their Instagram handles. They're like, oh, follow me. And I was like, all right, maybe I'll start my own. And I did. I added a bunch of people.
[00:20:42] I actually saw you at that time. I saw the podcast. That was early 2022. That was like only eight months, I think, after my daughter was born and everything just got real busy. And I, I just shelved everything.
[00:20:54] I didn't go back on my Instagram account for like a year. Yeah. I just let it sit for a year. Wow.
[00:21:01] I think what got me started back on the Instagram was, I got cut off by a big pickup truck on the highway and I flashed my high beams at him. And he turned on this huge light bar on the back of his car and blinded me.
[00:21:17] And I said, you know what? I had plans to do some stuff. Maybe it's time. Yeah. Yeah. So I started gathering parts in like February of 2023. So were you connecting with, I mean, you know, obviously you said you found the podcast and you connected with other people.
[00:21:37] Were you starting to see what other people were doing? And then you were like, oh, that looks cool. And that looks cool. And that looks cool. These are some of the things that I want to do.
[00:21:48] Obviously you said it started on Reddit, but then did it kind of snowball with connecting with people on Instagram? Absolutely. As soon as I got on Instagram, the algorithm just starts sending stuff your way. And I'm like, oh my God, that's so cool.
[00:22:03] And then I started seeing some of the more popular accounts like OC Turbo Show. And just, you know, I think that was like seeing his cross track.
[00:22:15] I think I even, I found a picture, I screenshotted it in early 2021 of his when it wasn't as modified as it is now. And I think that was like the catalyst of like, of my, my journey with the cross track. But yeah, definitely.
[00:22:30] As soon as I got on Instagram, I was like, this is, I guess I have to modify it now. Fuel economy out the window. So what was the first thing that you did? I mean, you mentioned a basket earlier and mud flaps.
[00:22:42] So what was like the first big mod? And then, and did you do anything big before you kind of took a break for a year or was it not until after that year? It wasn't really until after that year.
[00:22:53] I just did the basket, the mud flaps, the fog lights. So then some overlays from Orsini. Nice. That was it. And then it was like a good 10 months of like nothing. I didn't even open my Instagram account. And I just started again.
[00:23:10] I bought basically what started is I moved to a new house. It forced me to like get all the parts I had like pretty much bought and I didn't touch. So I found my grill and I'm like, you know what?
[00:23:21] I'm just going to make the grill because I just bought the mesh. Oh, okay. And I had to remove the, uh, the grill from the front of the car and cut it all up and, and glue the mesh into the actual bezel from the grill. Yep.
[00:23:34] So that started it. And then I just happened to be browsing on Facebook marketplace and I found a pretty much brand new site. It was a set of Toyo open country, 225s on a, on method wheels on the, uh, the Subaru specific methods.
[00:23:55] I said, this is a sign. So I messaged the guy, he only lived one town over from me and, uh, I ended up buying his wheels and I put them on and they fit.
[00:24:05] Did he have a set of four or did he have like the full-size spare too? Just four. Okay. And the funny thing was, is I used to see him driving around near where I lived before I moved all the time.
[00:24:17] I was like, that's such a cool looking track. I want to do that. You know, if I ever get the money and I ended up buying his wheels. That's funny. Yeah. That's cool.
[00:24:28] You like you go out and you meet up with a lot of people now and you're part of adventure one, which we'll talk about later. But are there a lot of these, like the people that you hang out with, are they pretty close to you? Yeah.
[00:24:39] They're scattered all over new England. I guess being close is relative. I mean, like Texas is pretty big for you. I feel like new England's huge, like a two hour drive. I'm like, Oh, you know what I mean?
[00:24:50] I'm so used to getting to places in like 45 minutes or less, but they're pretty close. BPMX track, Brendan, he's probably 45 minutes north of me. Nick at South Coast Crosstrek, he's probably like 35 minutes south of me. You got Kyle, the Create Outdoors. He's in New Hampshire.
[00:25:10] Transformer tracks up in New Hampshire. They're probably about an hour away, probably a little more. Goon track, he's down in Plymouth. I mean, they're all pretty close. They're all within 35, 45 minutes for the most part, give or take. Okay. Yeah.
[00:25:25] I see people that are out hitting the trails, especially like up in New England and then like in the Pacific Northwest and all the cool places basically. And, you know, I don't usually know, like, and I wonder at times, like how close are these people?
[00:25:41] Because, you know, I wonder if like you start connecting with people on Instagram and you're like, man, these people were so close to me all this time. I didn't know it until I found them on Instagram, you know?
[00:25:52] Yeah, actually, I think like the first person who like lived in the area to reach out to me, like after I started posting more, when I did my grill and I put on the hello lights and stuff like that.
[00:26:04] Matt Goon track, reach out to me and he's like, oh, we're twinning because he had like the same grill and the badges. And then after that, I just, you know, I wasn't really planning on really like messaging people at random because that wasn't me at all.
[00:26:18] I'm a pretty reserved person for the most part. And that kind of broke the ice for me. And I just kind of started reaching out to people.
[00:26:26] And I'd say within that first couple months, Goon track, Brendan and Joe at XV Adventure, we got added to like a little group chat and we just started shooting ideas back and forth.
[00:26:39] And like, you know, I had no idea what I was doing when I was modding my car. And I guess they had all started pretty recently as well. You know, if I had questions, I reached out to them and they were all super helpful.
[00:26:50] Yeah. I mean, the community is really great for that. When you're trying to do something and you need some help, you know, reaching, like you said, you're pretty reserved and not want to just like randomly message people.
[00:27:01] But when you kind of get that comfort level of like, hey, let me message this person and ask them what they did. Then you find out that they're very helpful.
[00:27:09] It's like, it's really nice to have that with, you know, not just a few people, but like so many people out there that may be doing all sorts of different things that are working. And they're willing to like share their information.
[00:27:21] You know, it's like such a great aspect of the community. Oh, it's great. And I've learned that, you know, I always immediately assume that the person I haven't talked to yet is like extremely intimidating for like no reason.
[00:27:34] I don't know why I do that. That's just my personality. Yeah. And then they're like, they're always, it's the exact opposite every time. So yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's good when you, you know, you find that out about people that they're so helpful.
[00:27:46] So when, so do you have names for your Subarus? I do. I do. I've named all my cars. I can't help it. I always get my cars in names. Do you want to hear them all? No, just the, just the Crosstrek and the Outback.
[00:28:00] All right. So the Outback I call fragrant. I'm a big anime nerd. You wouldn't tell by looking at me, but I've been super into Japanese cartoons since I was like 10 years old.
[00:28:13] So that's a character from a show that I actually was watching at the time that I bought the Outback and I thought it fit. And then my Crosstrek, I call Barbariana. Okay.
[00:28:26] It's another character from like a really weird short movie that's on Netflix called Kung Fury about a time traveling cop that goes back in time to fight the Nazis. It's really weird. Yeah. It sounds interesting, but I don't know. I may have to check that out.
[00:28:41] Yeah. It's basically this Viking girl rides in on a Raptor holding a minigun and he goes, who are you? And she goes, I'm Barbariana. And then it's like 80s metal music. Oh, no, that's cool. Yeah. So, so I guess is it Trekachusetts? Is that how you pronounce it?
[00:29:00] Yeah. Yeah. Yep. I guess just where you live, huh?
[00:29:06] Pretty much. Yeah. I mean, yeah, I had a different username for a while, but that was like right when I made my account for the first time and I let it sit for a year and I came back to a bunch of weird messages from, I think people assuming that I was a woman. I don't know.
[00:29:24] It was Trekin underscore MA for like Massachusetts. Oh, yeah. And I was like, ma or mom or something like that. So I got a bunch of creepy messages from a few people. It was really weird. So I said, yeah, I'm going to change that.
[00:29:39] No, I like the new one. That's good. It's very fitting. So, but so you've got these two outbacks. I know that you said that you wanted a WRX and you got one. And, but do you have like, since you've kind of been in the Subaru community now for a little bit longer, do you have a dream Subaru?
[00:29:58] I do have a dream Subaru, specifically a 2007 Hawkeye STI. Very nice. Yeah. But I don't know if I'll ever find one. A coworker of mine has one in like pristine condition that he keeps in his garage. I don't think he ever drives it.
[00:30:17] There you found one. There you go. Yeah. I don't know what happened to your car, man. It just, it just disappeared. I don't have it. Yeah. Well, if you could like drive somebody else's Subaru for a day, whose would it be and why?
[00:30:34] So I think I got, I have two for this one. Actually, maybe I possibly have three. I don't know. I couldn't pick one. I think Robert Champion's new Forester build is like the coolest thing I've ever seen. Yeah. That's nice.
[00:30:52] It just looks so good and it keeps getting better. It's a pretty sick build. I would definitely want to drive that around just from how cool it looks. The second one I'd pick is, was it PNW Unpaved? I don't know his name. Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:31:10] He also has, I think it's a Forester and I want to drive his specifically because of where he goes, because he is always out in the sticks.
[00:31:18] He's always doing cool stuff. And I want to drive his specifically just because, you know, where he takes it. That was an option. And the third one is, I don't know if many people know about this account, but it's Lifted 91 Loyale. I do not know about that one.
[00:31:36] Oh, it's such a cool build. It's like a very old Loyale station wagon that this guy has put on a custom lift kit and it is so cool. It's like that right amount of vintage and it's a really cool Subaru.
[00:31:51] I'll have to check that out then. So like going back to your mods, of all the mods that you've done, what would you say is your favorite? My favorite is probably the bumpers. Yeah, those are nice. I think it really changed the look of the car.
[00:32:10] Yeah. And when did you end up putting those on? Recently, actually. One of them within the last month and a half and the one before that probably three months ago. So in a short span of time.
[00:32:26] And then, so did you put those on for functionality with going off-road? I know it helps with ground clearance. Or, you know, I mean like what was the purpose of putting those on? And secondly, were you scared to cut your bumper?
[00:32:40] To answer the second question first, absolutely horrified. I can only imagine. Yeah, very nervous. First question. Yes, they do have some great functionality. The ground clearance is definitely better or approach angles actually and departure angles are pretty good.
[00:33:00] Did I really 100% need that? Probably not, but it looks so cool. Oh yeah. I couldn't help myself. I originally put on a different bumper back in December and I thought it looked so cool and after a while I was like, it's just not what I wanted.
[00:33:24] And Rigid Armor put out that Baja tube looking bumper and I said, you know what? Just do it. Yeah, yeah. I know. I mean, if you get stuck, you know, they're good for attaching, you know, toe straps to, to getting you out.
[00:33:42] Exactly. And I did have a winch in the bumper originally too. I just have not put that back in. I just haven't found the time.
[00:33:50] Yeah, I, if I had some sort of, you know, steel front or rear bumper when my son called me because his friend's rear wheel two wheel drive truck was stuck in the mud.
[00:34:03] I could have pulled them out, but I didn't have any way to attach to my car and I didn't have any toe straps.
[00:34:09] So I had to call some friends and help them out. But I don't usually have that issue with getting stuck because I don't get myself into situations where I would get stuck.
[00:34:19] And there's not a lot around here anyway, but you know, I have fun with my car though. Same. I don't really put myself in a position where I am going to get stuck. Everybody up here says you're next because everybody's been stuck.
[00:34:33] Oh, so you haven't been stuck yet, huh? I have not. Yeah. It's funny when I had a XV Adventure on and he said he had never gotten stuck. And then like the next weekend he got stuck. That was classic.
[00:34:46] Well, if I go out next week, I mean, you know, maybe. Yeah. Joe Extract Moose. He sent me a video of what's XV Adventure. What's his name? His name is Joe too, right? Joe. Also Joe.
[00:35:02] Yeah, that's what I thought. So he sent me a video of him getting stuck and then that was what I did for XV Adventures intro was the sound of him getting stuck. That's awesome.
[00:35:13] So do you, I mean like with your car being actually let me go back. So with, so you said what your favorite mod is, what would you say has proved to be the most useful?
[00:35:23] Definitely the wheels and tires. I'd say that helped the most because that was like one of the first things. And I went on the trail with just wheels and tires for the first time. And I mean, I think it, I think it made a difference.
[00:35:42] Yeah, I know that tires for sure would definitely make a difference. Cause my daughter has a 24 cross track and we went to Bastrop, which is a spot that's not too far from me. And she ended up getting stuck in some sticky mud.
[00:35:57] But she also just has like the all, you know, the all season tires or whatever that it comes with, you know, stock. And she ended up putting it in X mode and eventually got out. But I was, you know, I was wondering like if she would have even gotten close to getting stuck if she'd had all terrain tires.
[00:36:17] Because I didn't go through the same spot. I was thinking about it, but I was like, because it was sticky. It wasn't just like, you know, kind of wet slushy mud. Like it was sticky mud and her tires were just spinning in place and she couldn't go anywhere until she turned X mode on. And then her husband was behind pushing it some. I don't know if that actually helped.
[00:36:39] And I was like, looking back, I'm like, man, I should have told him not to push. Cause I wanted to see her get out, you know, a hundred percent on her own using X mode, but it worked out. So I'm sure that like eventually we'll get her some new tires, but also want to get her some new wheels too. So I don't want to, I don't, and I don't know if she wants to eventually go with like a 15 inch wheel or stay with the 17 inch wheel. But I really liked the look of the 15 inch wheel because it gives you more, more tire.
[00:37:06] It looks so good. I love the look of rubber over more wheel.
[00:37:10] Yeah. Unless you're doing more street stuff, it makes sense. But for off-road, I think it makes more sense to have more, more rubber. So, but, uh, so do you have like a list of mods that you still want to do? I mean, I know a lot of people aren't.
[00:37:26] I always have a list. It's always getting added to, and there's, there's a few things I still want to do. I actually, I have some mods in my, in my workshop. I still got, still haven't done yet stuff. I don't even know if I'm going to do and that I got anyways. I have a set of, uh, uh, rocker guards are, uh,
[00:37:47] The rocker panels. Oh man. Rock sliders. Rock sliders. There it is. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, it's just a little moment. Yeah. It's a two brains to figure it out. I have a set of body armor rock sliders. Okay.
[00:38:00] I've yet to put them on and I don't even know if I'm going to put them on. I don't know if I need them.
[00:38:05] Well, at least you've got them, you know? So in case that first time you hit and you didn't have them, you're like, well, that might be a good time to put them on. Yeah. Have you, have you done any damage to your car while being off-road?
[00:38:21] Uh, not off-road other than scratches and stuff like that. Nothing crazy. You know, I've got some scuffs on the wheels. Yeah. Definitely some skid plate damage, but nothing. I don't have no real trail damage. I've gotten more damage to my car just being on the highway. Yeah.
[00:38:38] I hit it right before I started kind of modifying my car. I was on my way home from work or on my way to work in the morning and I hit an entire tire. Oh, geez.
[00:38:50] Yeah. I ran over it and it blew off my mud flaps and it ripped off the actual plastic on my rocker panel. Put this huge rubber schmear down the side of my car. Luckily I didn't get dented or anything. It buffed out. Doesn't look like it ever happened.
[00:39:06] Yeah. The plastic's all scuffed and I never replaced it. You can't even tell. Yeah. I figured it was going to get banged up anyways.
[00:39:12] I know. I have more off-trail damage on my car than on-trail, but there was a... I was at a grocery store one time and I was parked next to where you return the carts and there was a car in front of me, but there was enough space for me to drive through, just go straight and just turn and go through the space between the basket thing and the car, which I've done many, many times.
[00:39:39] And for some reason, I just turned a little too tight and the edge of the basket thing, which is metal. I hear it just go all the way down the side of my car. And I was like, I can't believe I just did that. And I got home and I looked at it and I was like, I can't even see anything. I think my car was a little muddy then.
[00:40:00] But when I looked at it the next day, I saw it and it's very, very subtle. You don't see it unless you point... unless I pointed out. Otherwise it's not noticeable. Yeah.
[00:40:12] Thank goodness. It didn't dent the door or anything. It just kind of scuffed the paint and it's not even really scratched. It's just more scuffed. So I'm like, I'm not even going to worry about it. My hatch is still damaged from when I got hit from behind, but it closes and I don't think it leaks.
[00:40:28] So there's a few other little things, but I don't really worry about it too much. I figure at this point, it's a rig. I take it off road. I have fun with it. I'm not trying to keep it all pretty and showroom worthy.
[00:40:42] Absolutely. That's kind of what I got to tell myself too. Because I think I've damaged my car modifying it more than I have taking it out because I drop things on it all the time. I put dents in it, dropping things on it, tools.
[00:40:55] Yeah, I have dents in my hood and the A pillar on the passenger side from hail. Oh really?
[00:41:06] Yeah. Because it was hailing one day really bad and I was like, no, please no, please no. And I go out there and there's dents in my hood and a few other spots. But yeah, it hails here pretty bad sometimes. And that one got me. Oh man.
[00:41:23] But I'm not going to try to get them out. I'm not worried about it. At this point, again, it's just a rig. It adds to the look. Yeah, it does. I can't tell in the pictures online.
[00:41:37] Yeah. So do you have people that come up to you? Obviously, other Subaru enthusiasts would be excited about seeing your car and ask you questions and talk about it and stuff. But when you're going around town and stuff, do you have people come up to you and ask you about your car or make comments on it? Stuff like that?
[00:41:54] Oh, a lot. I always get people go, you go off-roading and that thing? And I'm like, yep. Of course.
[00:42:03] I do. And then a lot of people ask me if it's a Subaru. Because, you know, I guess if you're not super into Subarus, it'd be kind of confusing when you see one like that, I guess.
[00:42:15] Yeah. And maybe it's so modified that they can't tell what it is anymore. Yeah. If you're not super into them, people ask me all the time. People come up to me and they go, is that a Subaru? And I'm like, oh, no. Okay.
[00:42:33] I mean, I've had people come up to me and tell me it's awesome. And I had a guy in a hybrid Crosstrek tell me that he wanted to do that. And he's like, do you think I can? And I'm like, I 100% have no idea if you could lift a hybrid Subaru or a Crosstrek. But I mean, definitely look into it. That would be pretty cool.
[00:42:49] Yeah, definitely. Yeah. I don't want to give you any bad advice. Yeah. I mean, there are things he can do to at least make a standout. I mean, you know, there's always decals, which definitely helps. Absolutely. There's always something you can do.
[00:43:03] Yeah. Have you had any odd questions? I mean, asking if it's a Subaru is kind of odd, but have you ever had anybody ask you any really bizarre questions?
[00:43:13] Oh, yeah. So two really strange encounters. I can't say really strange, but I was in the Taco Bell drive-thru line once. And when I got to the window, the girl at the window staring at me and she stares at the car and she stares at me and she goes, are you a cop?
[00:43:33] I've got some lights on here, but no. Yeah. I was like, I'm not a cop. I've also never been asked that. That's funny. Ever. Yeah, that's funny.
[00:43:46] That's the only time I've ever been asked that. And I assume it's probably going to be the only time I've ever asked that. Yeah. And then quite often I get people asking me if the lights on the hood are cameras. Oh, interesting.
[00:44:00] I don't know if that happens to anybody else, but my ditch lights are constantly confused with cameras. I don't know why. Yeah, that's funny. Are those cameras? That's a really common question. Probably five or six times now I've had people at gas stations ask me if they're cameras.
[00:44:19] I've definitely never had that question. That is an interesting one. So we can, you know, if you like scroll through your Instagram page, you can see what you've done to the outside pretty much.
[00:44:31] But are there things that you've done on the inside that people may not normally see?
[00:44:36] Man, I don't know. Not really. I think it's pretty tame on the inside. I mean, I got seat covers on everything because I do a little bit in construction areas. I'm always covered in sheetrock dust.
[00:44:51] So I put my car hard seat covers on so I can take them off and wash them if I need to. That's good. I got a giant lighting panel for my aux beam next to my steering wheel. It's huge. It's like half the size of an iPad.
[00:45:08] I upgraded it from the 8-gang one to the 12-gang one so I could wire up all my lights and it is just absolutely massive. How many lights do you have outside of just the headlights and the taillights?
[00:45:21] I think too many sometimes. I think it's a little bit of an addiction. I got to get those lumens. Man, I thought I had to count them. Probably like 10. Yeah, I mean, looking on your Instagram. Maybe 12. I got one in the rear too.
[00:45:39] Okay, yeah. You got the light bar up on the top. You've got two sets of ditch lights and then you've got the fog lights, the three in the front. And then, yeah, I'm just looking on your Instagram page. I actually have more sitting on my desk right now.
[00:45:56] I don't know where I'm going to put them. I think I was going to swap them out for something else and move a couple of them around. I don't know. I just like playing with the lights. Yeah, I'd like to get some more lights at some point.
[00:46:10] You talked about getting cut off and flashing the guy and him putting on his light bar or whatever and blinding you.
[00:46:26] Man, there's so many times I wish I had one because there's times I'm driving on the highway a lot, especially when I'm going up to see my girlfriend. And I'll be driving in traffic and there's nowhere for me to go.
[00:46:41] And people come up behind me really close and just start flashing me like I'm supposed to be able to physically be able to move somewhere. And it's so annoying and I would love to just flip on a high light bar and just high lumen light bar.
[00:46:55] I put a light bar on the back of my roof rack for that specific reason. But since then, I've never used it because I honestly, I would feel awful for actually blinding someone, even if they're tailgating me. I don't know. I just I feel bad about doing that.
[00:47:10] I think I've done it like once or twice and then I felt bad instantly. Some of the people that I've seen driving, I wouldn't feel bad about it because they're driving like total idiots. You know, they're like tailgating everybody after they get past me.
[00:47:23] They're cutting people off left and right, flying up and down the freeway. And just like, why is there never a cop when somebody's driving like a complete idiot? Exactly. And I think sometimes maybe it's not even like me feeling bad.
[00:47:37] It's just like people are so unpredictable these days. Yeah, that's true, too, because you don't want to flash somebody and then they come up next to you and shoot you. The retaliation factor is sometimes too high. Yeah, it is crazy. So what are you doing with your Outback?
[00:47:52] What was the purpose of getting the Outback? I know you've got some wheels on it and a basket. Are you planning to mod it or has it now become your commuter?
[00:48:03] It is pretty much my commuter, but I also plan on doing stuff to it because, you know, why not have like a cool little commuter?
[00:48:11] And all the mods kind of just other than like the Rally Innovations light bar I put on the front, everything else kind of just fell into my lap. You know, just kind of like cruising around Facebook Marketplace. I'm a big Facebook Marketplace junkie.
[00:48:25] I think a lot of the parts from my Crosstrek are from Facebook Marketplace and a lot of the things on the Outback are from Facebook Marketplace. And do you find like really, really good prices on those? Like way less than if you were to buy it new?
[00:48:38] Yeah, you know, I'm big on used stuff. I mean, I don't care. It doesn't bother me. Yeah, for stuff like that. I buy used clothes. I like the thrifts. But, you know, if I can get a good deal on something on Facebook Marketplace, I'll get it.
[00:48:52] I've got lights, obviously wheels and tires, both baskets I've had on both of my cars. You know, plenty of stuff. I need to check it out more because I just, I mean, I think there's a lot of people out there who are like,
[00:49:06] I just, I mean, I think the only thing that I would want to do right now is maybe a light bar. But other than that, I just, I don't really have a need for a lot of stuff.
[00:49:16] I mean, I think my car looks pretty cool to me the way it is. You know, it's definitely not stock and I'm happy with it. But just there's not really much else that I would need to do with it.
[00:49:29] And that's kind of all that matters as long as what you want, what makes you happy. I mean, I think I've gone slightly overboard. I don't know. It's like my hobby. So, you know, I can't stop tinkering with it. You know, either of them.
[00:49:44] Yeah. But I mean, they're your bills and you're going to do what you want with it and you're having fun with it. And again, it's like we're building these cars for us.
[00:49:53] We may draw inspiration from other people, but, you know, I don't think anybody's really out there to try to impress other people in the community.
[00:50:01] You know, it's like you may do some of the same things that other people are doing, but ultimately it's like what we want to do with our car. And then you get compliments and comments and excitement from other people. And that's really cool, too.
[00:50:17] Oh, yeah. It's really cool. I think that sometimes I definitely put things on the car. I definitely do some modifications that aren't really necessary, but I mean, I think they look really cool.
[00:50:34] And I don't know. I'm not I don't want to say that I'm doing it for looks, but I don't know. I just I like modding the car. I like spending the time in the driveway. Yeah. My wife would disagree. Very much.
[00:50:49] Yeah. What does she think about it all? I mean, she thinks the car is cool. I mean, she said that. I mean, I hope she says that. Yeah.
[00:50:59] She had a Subaru when I bought this at the time and she was always telling me, she's like, why can't you do that to my car? I'm like, I will. You know, I definitely I'll get to it. But we don't have that car anymore.
[00:51:09] So unfortunately, yeah, we got rid of her Outback Walter. Yeah. Was something wrong with it or did she just decide to get something different? She just decided to get something different to her.
[00:51:24] The backseat was a little small, trying to put our daughter in her car seat and like I don't know. She just wanted something a little bigger and ended up getting a Honda Passport, which is honestly. It's a nice SUV. Those are nice. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:51:41] You don't see a lot of them. You see a lot of pilots, but the Passport's not so much. Yeah. No, that's good. Those are nice. So how like you've got I mean, you know, it looks like you've got trails around you.
[00:51:55] Do you have like an abundance of trails or they're just like a few trails that you're always getting out to? There's a few. I mean, there's there's Freetown. That's like South of me. That's kind of down by like Fall River, Massachusetts.
[00:52:12] And then you got there's some trails over in Rhode Island slash Connecticut, like right on the border. Those are like the two main ones that everybody from down here goes to. To be honest, I haven't gone out in a while.
[00:52:25] I've I have not taken the car out probably in four months. Oh, just been so busy with work. So I hope to get out soon. I finally went to a different job site and I really want to get back out there again. And I need to.
[00:52:40] Yeah, it calls. Oh, I know we had a hurricane come through here on Monday and with a ton of rain. And I'm like, you know, my car has been looking clean ish for like I haven't properly washed it in months.
[00:52:55] But, you know, I'll take it out, go get it muddy. And then I just take it to the self car wash with a high pressure nozzle or high pressure wand and get all the mud off. But I haven't like properly washed my car.
[00:53:08] And I don't know how long it's been. I washed my daughter's car for her a few couple of weeks ago, but haven't washed my own. Same. I don't think I've washed my car. And actually, that's not true. I washed it for Wicked Bigby. OK.
[00:53:23] You know, I hit it with the pressure washer. I didn't like hand wash it or anything. Yeah. But the silver really helps on that. The silver is like New England's number one color because, you know, from 20 feet away, it looks pristine until you're on top of it.
[00:53:37] And you can tell it's absolutely filthy. Yeah. I mean, white looks pretty good, too. I mean, white gets, you know, it can show dirt really well.
[00:53:44] But it also like when I pressure wash it and just get the mud off and it's not like clean, clean and hand washed clean. It looks really good. And so I'm usually OK with that. That would have been my second choice for color if I got to choose.
[00:54:01] Yeah. It's definitely white. Yeah. So you mentioned Wicked Bigby. I know you went to that and you've also been to Boxer Fest. But how many times have you been to each of them?
[00:54:11] And did you put your well, you said you you washed your car or washed it for Wicked Bigby. Do you put your car in the shows? My first Wicked Bigby ever was last year's. That was super fun. I put my car in the show. They accepted it.
[00:54:28] It took them a while to get back to me, but I got a site, entered the show, went out trailing the day before the show. Got it absolutely covered in mud like it was filthy. That's how I entered it in the show. Good, good. Caked in mud.
[00:54:43] So did so did Brendan, BPMX Trek. He did the same thing. Yeah, that was my first Wicked Bigby. Awesome experience. And then Boxer Fest. You've been to Boxer Fest too? Yep. Went down to Boxer Fest also in 2023. Yeah. A few of us drove down there all together.
[00:55:00] That was pretty fun. It was me, BPMX Trek, and Sage the Crosstrek. Yeah, he's here now. Yep, he is. He's a Massachusetts transplant down in Texas. Yeah. We all drove down to Boxer Fest together.
[00:55:16] And then on the way there we met up with another friend of ours, Alex, who is on Instagram at Scargo. We met up, drove down there. That was awesome. We camped the whole weekend. We met up with PYP Dad Wagon Shane.
[00:55:31] A couple other people that escape me right now. I'm sorry if I forgot you. I definitely met a lot of people from that area who drive up to Boxer Fest. But it's hard to recognize. I don't recognize any of the people.
[00:55:44] I see the cars, but I don't know the people. Yeah. I need them. I know. I went out to an event one time and I saw a bunch of people. And I'm asking this one person that I knew, I'm like, who is that and what's their account?
[00:55:58] Who is that and what's their account? Who owns this account? Because some of the accounts you don't ever see the person. And so it was hard to figure out who everybody was and then keep everybody straight. So I totally get that. Yeah. I actually recognized one person.
[00:56:15] I think they had posted maybe one picture of themselves on their account. I just recognized them walking by and I yelled their name out. And they looked at me like I scared the hell out of them. Oops, sorry. Sorry about that. How do you know my name?
[00:56:31] I'm like, I'm sorry. I'm not stalking you. So when you went to, I don't remember which one it was, but you went and there was like Rihanna and Travis there. Did you get to meet them? That was, I think this past one. Yeah.
[00:56:46] I didn't actually get to meet them. Adventure One had a booth at this Wicked Big Meet and I really didn't end up really leaving the booth all that much. Yeah. We actually had my car parked at the booth. That was really cool. Oh, that's cool. Yeah.
[00:57:04] I think that kind of fulfilled a small dream of mine to have my car featured in the show like that. So how was that for Adventure One being at the show? Did y'all have a lot of people come by and ask y'all about it?
[00:57:15] And did y'all, I mean, I know you said you didn't really get a chance to leave the booth and I know they get really busy at those events. So was it like a lot of people coming by? Oh, there was a ton of people coming by.
[00:57:25] And I mean, you know, Wicked Big Meet and a lot of those places, I mean, the off-roading side of Subaru isn't like, you know, that's not the main reason people are there to be honest. Yeah.
[00:57:39] And, you know, but I think it drawed a lot of people in because people are just generally curious.
[00:57:44] You got this, this cross track right here and it's got a bunch of stuff on it and people just kind of come over and like, maybe some of them still don't know that there's this size of event.
[00:57:53] You know, Subaru. I mean, a lot of them probably do, but I don't know, it piques interest. People definitely came over and talked to us. That's good.
[00:58:02] It was really fun. I like to talk to people. I mean, all the guys, all the admins in the group, you know, they all like, it was fun.
[00:58:09] We just trying to grow the group a bit and show that, you know, we're active and we've been trying to plan events and, you know, get people out there and, you know, get people just, you know.
[00:58:20] Adventure One is one of those things where we're just trying to get people connected with one another, you know. Yeah.
[00:58:27] In the area. Cause, you know, Adventure One is overland New England, I think at this point. It's just kind of a place where people can go and, you know, we talk and we got a big online chat on discord.
[00:58:41] You know, you got a question, there's 50 people that could answer that question for you. So it's really awesome to have that group of guys and all the admins are really awesome people too.
[00:58:52] Yeah. And like we mentioned earlier, before we started recording is that I've had a few of them on. Yeah.
[00:59:02] You said that, I think it was last year that you had Bucky sign one of your, like, it was like a 20 plus year old vintage or old deck. Did you get, did you get a chance to talk to him some or did he just sign it real quick?
[00:59:16] I didn't really get a chance to talk to him. He had a time slot stamped out sometime during the event last year to sign autographs and stuff, but I completely ignored that I think. And like he was walking around filming a bunch of stuff and me and Brendan BPMX Trek were kind of just wandering around and we saw him and I just grabbed my board.
[00:59:40] And I think I, you know, I was pretty awkward. I kind of ambushed him and I feel bad about it now, but I was like, Hey Bucky, can we sign my board? And like this board is, I mean, I call it like ancient at this point. It was like from 2001 maybe.
[00:59:56] Yeah. I think that specific board might've even been in Tony Hawk Pro Skater. Oh cool. Yeah.
[01:00:03] It's a really old skateboard and it's a big rooster on it with a drink and a bucket hat. It's like super old. You know, I don't think I skateboarded past freshman year of high school, but I was like, Bucky's going to be there. I'm going to get him to sign my Bucky Lastic board. Like how cool would that be? I still have it.
[01:00:19] Nice. 20 years so might as well. He seems like a really cool dude.
[01:00:23] Yeah, yeah he is. He's, I mean, there's times when like he's at events I've seen, you know, like he's really busy or they're pulling him to like go over to this place or that place. But if he's just like walking around, you know, I mean, he's always talking to people. He's always asking people about their build and I mean, he's just, he's a super chill guy. He's very friendly. And, you know, he takes the time to talk to people and sign old boards.
[01:00:49] And, you know, so yeah, he's been really good for the community. And I know that a lot of people find out that he is such a cool guy and approachable and stuff because I mean, it is kind of intimidating because it's Bucky Lastic and, you know, he's driven for Subaru.
[01:01:05] And, you know, like I've told the story before, but like when I first met him, when I went to Boxer Fest back in 2021, yeah, this guy from SOA introduced me to Bucky. And like I didn't, the only thing I knew of Bucky at the time was that I remember seeing him at X Games and that he had some Subarus. That was really all I knew.
[01:01:28] So when I met him, it wasn't like, oh my gosh, it's Bucky Lastic. You know, it's such a big deal. It wasn't until afterwards and I started like finding out more and more about him that like now I'm intimidated to go up to him, even though I've had him on a podcast, I see him at events, you know, I still feel intimidated going up to him because I'm like, he's kind of a big deal.
[01:01:48] Just a little bit. Yeah, yeah. He's always doing things. I feel like he tries to make it out to everything. He doesn't stop.
[01:01:57] Yeah, I mean, he's, you know, he, he likes going out and seeing people. And, you know, now that he's got Betty, he's been driving her around and stuff and at the events. So that's super cool to see him out there doing stuff. So like when you, when you started like connecting, well, I guess you kind of mentioned some of the people that live around you, but who are some of the people that you connected with first that you realize that they were really close to you?
[01:02:24] Matt Goontrek, Brendan BPMxtrek, obviously I've met him a couple times already, but Nick at South Coast Crosstrek, Angelo Whitewagon, Sage the Crosstrek, obviously his group, he had a group. It was S&E Trail and Travel. They were the first people I ever went out with.
[01:02:46] Okay, yeah, I remember that.
[01:02:48] I found them on Facebook, I think. It wasn't even on Instagram. I found him on a Facebook group and I reached out to them and they said, Hey, come, come out with us. All right. And he was supposed to be there that day, but he ended up not being able to make it. I think he blew an axle on the way from, on the way back from the airport. He couldn't come.
[01:03:06] Yeah, that would be problematic. A little bit.
[01:03:10] So when you, when you've gotten out, you know, with people and you go out to these trails and stuff, I've seen there's, there's some quite a few posts of you like going through some mud, either mud puddles or, you know, water puddles. Have any of them been kind of scary? Because I know you said that you haven't really gotten yourself into situations that could be problematic, but were there any that were like, kind of iffy and a little worried as you were driving through?
[01:03:36] There was one puddle, I think. And when I say puddle, it was like almost like a small swimming pool.
[01:03:44] The road. So like, it's like the place I mentioned earlier, Freetown, there's a road there, Copacabana Road. And it's just these ups and downs, ups and downs. And it's all these pools of water, all these giant puddles of water, depending on like what time of the season you went or if it's rained recently. And some of those can get pretty deep.
[01:04:10] And I think one time when we went, they were deeper than normal. And I had water come over onto the hood and I'm like, oh man.
[01:04:18] I mean, it always seems deeper when you're in the car than it actually is. But when the water came over the hood, I was like, oh no. And like, I just kind of like gunned it through. I don't know if that was the right thing to do or not. But like back then, when I got in a sticky situation, I just floored it. Nothing bad happened.
[01:04:36] But that got a little hairy. And I don't know, that's more exciting to me than going through it really fast.
[01:05:13] Oh yeah, definitely now. I like to do things a little bit slower. But you know, when I got nervous, when I first started doing this, I don't know why my initial reaction was floor it. But like the first couple times that was my initial reaction. I hit some stuff my first time going out.
[01:05:28] Yeah.
[01:05:30] A funny story that is, the first time I went out, all I had was wheels, tires and a light bar. And no skid plates or anything. We went out and I heard a couple bangs and booms my first couple times going through some big puddles. And I think the next time we pulled over to take pictures, I ordered skid plates on the trail.
[01:05:53] Oh, that's awesome. Yeah, that was a little scary. You got to take care of that pretty quick. Yeah, I was like, I don't need them yet. You know, I'll get them when I need them. And then it turned out that I probably needed them.
[01:06:05] Yeah. How often do you end up driving through snow? In the winter all the time. The last couple winters up in Massachusetts have been pretty mild. But we still get some good snow. Fun stuff.
[01:06:20] Yeah. Actually, this past February, it was my first time actually going off road in the snow. That was pretty cool. And I'd say that was probably my favorite terrain to go in. Driving through the woods when it's snowy and there's snow on the trees. It's kind of magical. It looks very outdoorsy. Almost like National Geographic.
[01:06:43] That is fun. And like me being from Houston and it not snowing here, I'm so thankful that I've been able to experience that because I took my son out to California. We went out to Lake Tahoe and met up with Subie Runner and Colby.
[01:07:02] And there was quite a bit of snow. And so we were able to go find some really good snow and drive through it. And he let my son drive his Crosstrek. So my son got the full experience of being able to drive through snow.
[01:07:17] And I let my son drive more than me because I wanted him to have experience more than myself. So I wanted to give that to him as much as I could. But he had a blast. So yeah, driving through snow in the woods on trails is so much fun. I wish I could do that more.
[01:07:38] It's a blast. And even driving in snow on the roads is also a blast up here. Yeah, I bet.
[01:07:47] Back when I had the WRX, I used to just go out in that. And the snowstorms, they basically shut down the roads. And I would just go out, me and all my buddies. I think there were like at one point 11 of us. We all had the same car. And we'd just go out to abandoned parking lots and do all-wheel drive donuts and drift. It was pretty fun.
[01:08:09] Yeah, when we had the big snowstorm here a few years ago, I went out to this parking lot and I just had the stock tires. I mean, my car was still pretty much 100% stock. And I remember having trouble getting it to drift and do donuts because of the all-wheel drive. But I mean, I was also timid back then too. I would have had a lot more fun now.
[01:08:30] I've never really gotten the cross track to be able to do it. But the WRX for some reason, that thing just went. I mean, obviously turbo, but it just set itself. That thing was made to do that.
[01:08:45] That would be a fun experience too. Do you have any crazy tales from being out on the trails? Anything crazy or funny that happened?
[01:08:55] This is a hard question to answer because I don't know. I mean, it's all pretty crazy the whole time. I mean, people just getting stuck. I mean, obviously I haven't gotten stuck yet. Knock on wood. Crazy trail tales. I don't know. I mean, they're all pretty wild.
[01:09:14] I mean, one thing that happened to me, I think it was right after I put my lift on, right after I did all my big trek mods, was Wicked Big Meat. We went out before Wicked Big Meat last year. It was that first time I went out on a really cool trail. It was the one down in Connecticut and there was a lot of stuff there.
[01:09:36] I was having a ton of fun and still I started hearing a big bonk, bonk. And I was like, oh no, what did I break? And the whole time we were out there, I couldn't figure out what it was. It was driving me crazy. I thought I figured it out and on my way home, bang, bang, bang. I could not for the life of me figure out what it was until I got pretty much all the way home. My exhaust was falling off.
[01:10:02] Oh no.
[01:10:03] The whole time apparently. I didn't put the hangers on correctly when I installed my nameless axle back because I had just taken off the stock exhaust and put on the nameless exhaust. I didn't do it correctly. So that thing was basically held on by just the bolts, the hangers.
[01:10:24] Oh wow. I don't know if I can call that a crazy or funny story. It's funny to me because I can't believe I didn't notice that whole time. Yeah, no, that's good. So how did you get connected with Adventure One and now being an admin?
[01:10:47] So I think when they initially started back in early 2023, I just saw them post something on Instagram and they're like, hey, sign up. I'm like, all right. I mean, that sounds cool. They're local. I'll join another group. I'm always trying to find ways to get out with more people.
[01:11:08] So I hit them up and Nick sent out this little welcome package with a sticker and all that jazz. I went out with him a couple times and that was pretty cool. I met them for the first time at the first Wicked Beat that I went to, Wicked Big Meet.
[01:11:25] They had a booth there. I got some more stickers, kind of met everybody that was in the group at the time and all really cool guys. Flash forward like two months and Nick just reached out to me and said, hey, do you want to be an admin? I was like, all right, definitely. I don't really know what that entails, but I'll definitely try to help out as much as I'm able to.
[01:11:49] So what does that entail now?
[01:11:52] You know, setting up the events like Wicked Big Meet or last year we had our Carb-A-Que where we had all our members or as many as could come to that. We plan on doing some more stuff. We did a couple trail cleanups because when we go out on these trails, there's a lot of people who go out and they trash them. They bring furniture back there, lay it on fire.
[01:12:18] That doesn't look good for all of us because nobody knows who's doing it. Yeah, inconsiderate. Yeah, and I think we try to embody what it means to like, we want to be using the public land respectfully. Yeah.
[01:12:39] That's kind of our slogan. I'm sure Nick has said this before when he was on here last year, but travel responsibly. Yeah. That's how it should be done. Almost like when you go hiking, leave no trace. Yeah, of course. Don't trash the trails.
[01:12:52] Yeah, I mean how hard is it to just not throw stuff out the window and not just collect your trash? It's just lazy. For a lot of people it seems pretty hard. I guess so. Just laziness. It's kind of disheartening honestly.
[01:13:05] Yeah, I mean people are just so inconsiderate and just don't care. And it's sad to see that. Sad to see that people have that mentality that they can just be like, oh, I'm just going to throw this out here. I don't care.
[01:13:16] Yeah, it's, I don't know. It must be like a human flaw. Not all of them, but I don't know.
[01:13:23] Yeah, I get that. Yeah. So you have these trails that you go out to, but do you have like, you know, seeing other people in other parts of the country and places that they hit up, do you have like a bucket list spot that you would love to go out and trail?
[01:13:37] Absolutely. I have like two bucket list spots. The Pacific Northwest, absolutely. I know everybody says that, but like that place just looks awesome. Like even if it's not for the trails, just the views from the road are like crazy. Like those mountains. I mean, Massachusetts doesn't have a ton of mountains. You know, we got like one or two and New Hampshire's got some awesome stuff up there, but the Pacific Northwest just looks so cool.
[01:14:04] Yeah, it's nice. Yeah, it's nice out there.
[01:14:08] The second spot would be, I want to say like Southern California or like, you know, like Nevada, like the desert. I really want to go to the desert. The desert just looks so fun. There's a group out of Las Vegas, I think, I think they're called the Dirty Roos. They always, they look like they're going out all the time. I think that group out there, they just look like they have a ton of fun out in the desert, like all the time.
[01:14:37] Always camping, always trailing. It just looks like a blast. I think I've heard of them. I have to check them out. I don't think I've heard of them. Yeah, it'd be nice to go out to the desert. Do that. There's a lot of spots.
[01:14:51] I like the salt flats. Yeah, yeah, definitely. That looks like, that looks like a lot of fun. That just details, you know, a big road trip and when I'll be able to do that, who knows? So.
[01:15:02] Yeah. So you said you have your daughter, like, do you just have the one child? Just the one. Yep. Okay. She's pretty great. She's two and a half or a little bit, a little bit older than two and a half. That's a fun age.
[01:15:15] Coming up on three in like October and man, she is, she's amazing. Yeah, that's a fun age. Yeah, it's a really fun age. Like when they're, when they're like just starting to figure stuff out, like it's really awesome to like see her, you know.
[01:15:29] Oh yeah. And they get so excited about things and like they light up and I don't know. And then the laughter, little kid laughter is just like probably one of the best things ever. There's nothing like it. It's awesome.
[01:15:41] Yeah. It is so fun. So you do get out with other people and but do you do any solo exploring or is it always with other people?
[01:15:51] I haven't really done any solo exploring and I don't know. I don't, I don't think it's because like I'm afraid to go out by myself. It's just like, I don't know.
[01:16:01] I just haven't done it. I want to for sure. And I've like there have been days where I'm like, oh, should I head out? And then I just end up not doing it. So maybe it's out of a little bit of laziness. I don't know.
[01:16:15] Well, you said you've been busy at work and then you've got a family at home too, you know.
[01:16:20] Yeah, I can't go out. I try to go out like once, maybe twice a month, you know, if I'm lucky. And like the past couple months, it's just there hasn't been time and that's absolutely fine with me. So what does your daughter think about your car?
[01:16:35] I don't think she really even notices it to be quite honest. Like it does not exist. It's just another metal thing in the driveway. Except I know when it's not there, she'll ask, where's daddy? Yeah, she knows us from our car.
[01:16:51] Oh, that's cool. Yeah. Maybe as she grows up, she'll be like, wow, that thing's really cool. Maybe, you know, I plan on holding on to it for a while. I don't think I, I don't think there's any real reason to get rid of it.
[01:17:04] Yeah. If you could sum up your Subaru journey in like one sentence or phrase, what would it be? I would say it's been a lot of chaos with a couple detours. Yeah.
[01:17:18] Cause I started with the WRX and I stopped and I went over and got some pickup trucks and found my way back eventually.
[01:17:26] And it kind of, you know, getting back into the Subaru thing kind of, you know, really picked up my life in the last year and a half to like where it wasn't.
[01:17:37] I mean, I was just at home and focused on work most of the time and I really wasn't going out. And a lot of my friends have dispersed across the country and then I don't see a lot of people that often.
[01:17:50] Now I have this entirely new group of friends out of nowhere. So it's been pretty great. It's just crazy how you can connect with so many different people and like all these people that you didn't know, you know, a couple of years ago.
[01:18:05] And now you're connecting with people all over the place. Oh yeah. For buying a car. Yep. Yeah, it's fun. It's a lot of fun. And it's fun when you get to finally meet somebody in person. That's always super cool.
[01:18:23] How would you say your or how does your Crosstrek and or your Outback best match your personality? This is probably gonna be a strange answer, but like I don't think that it does. Yeah.
[01:18:39] Because I, for the most part, like or at least I used to be until recently, but I'm kind of like a quiet, reserved person. I'm not like too socially outgoing for the most part. And then like my car kind of screams, Hey! Look at me.
[01:18:56] Like on the highway, people are always staring at me. And like, so like, I don't think it does. I think it almost kind of embodies the opposite. Yeah. Which is funny, I think.
[01:19:10] So you, I guess you like probably personally, like with the way you dress and other things, you don't really want to stand out with yourself too much.
[01:19:19] Yeah. I don't know. I just, I think it's funny that my car looks like that when I'm just kind of like a more, you know, extravagant. It just, it's, yeah.
[01:19:38] But would you say though, that like the way that you've built your car is a way for you to kind of express yourself in a way that you, you have like this tool here that you can use to kind of like express yourself.
[01:19:54] Things that are just a little crazy that you wouldn't necessarily do like with the way you dress and stuff. Yeah. I think so. For sure. Yeah. Because I'm the same way. It's like an outlet.
[01:20:06] Yeah. Cause like, I don't really in person, like I'm very shy. Like I go to events and I'm very shy. Like I'll be like standing off to the side. And I usually, if there's people there that I know, I'll stick to talking to them. And I won't really go up to people I don't know and introduce myself.
[01:20:21] And so I don't want to be like noticed kind of thing, but then there's my car and like, I want people to look at my car, you know? And I have fun expressing myself through my car, I think. And I think that's probably the case for a lot of people.
[01:20:38] I think I do that with more things than I even realized because like, you know, I did my cross track like that. And now I'm kind of starting to do that to the Outback and I made a custom license plate for my Outback. It says Steakhouse, which just draws more attention.
[01:20:56] Yeah. I don't know why I do that. Like, I don't like people staring at me, but like I do all these things that lead to people staring at me. Yeah. If you could describe your Subarus in one word, what would it be? Oh man. Chaotic. Yeah.
[01:21:18] I'm always changing something. I got to move stuff around. Like, I just, I'm sure people who follow me on Instagram always see that I'm doing something. You know, if I'm adding lights or I just, I always, I'm always doing something. So I don't know.
[01:21:34] Yeah. And there's always something to fix or something going wrong. Recently, I found that I think I have a leak in my roof, but I never noticed. I just noticed a big stain out of nowhere. Oh, that sucks.
[01:21:48] But I can't get it to recreate the leak. So I don't know when it happened or how it happened. Yeah, that sucks. Hopefully you'll find something. There's always some noise I got to fix and you know, it's just chaos. It's fun chaos.
[01:22:00] Yeah. Oh yeah, of course. I was looking at one of your posts and you've got your little panel of OEM switches and everything. So, but how many banana peels have you dropped on? Oh so many. So many. The next one I'm going to add is the red shell.
[01:22:19] Yeah. That's funny. Is that what that's for? It's like a Mario Kart reference. My wife actually bought that for me. I think, oh man, last year. That's funny.
[01:22:32] I can't remember what it was for. It might've been my birthday, but she just gave me this little envelope with these little stickers on it. I'm like, look at it. I'm like, what is this? And she goes, it's bananas. I went, no way.
[01:22:41] And I went and I found an open slot on my buttons. I popped them on there and for whatever reason, I think when I posted that, that post like popped off. Like I don't know where I got like 200 likes on it out of nowhere. Like I was like, what the heck?
[01:22:57] Yeah, that's a funny post. So yeah, I mean you kind of touched on this a little bit earlier, but how is owning your Subaru and being part of the community changed your life?
[01:23:08] Yeah. Like I said, I mean, I've just met so many great people, people I consider like good friends now just because I bought a car and like, I knew that the community was kind of like a thing back when I had my WRX, but like it was a little different.
[01:23:24] I'd say like back in like 2013, like the street side of the Subarus is a little different. So I knew there was definitely a community out there and I'd say it's a little more tight knit now to be quite honest with like Instagram and like I'm able to like talk to like so many different people, but like I just own in the cross tracks and Subarus is like, it has changed my life for the better.
[01:23:51] I'd say because like my wife says this all the time. She goes, where'd you get all these just friends out of nowhere? Cause I got people coming over to my house to work on my car. We're ripping stuff apart. I'm going to people's houses to like help them move and like do other things.
[01:24:05] You didn't have all these friends before. Yeah, out of nowhere. She's like, how did you, when did this happen?
[01:24:12] I bought a Subaru. Can I say about the right car? So now that you, you know, you had the WRX and you went to the Tacomas and then now you're back in the cross track and then you bought an Outback. You think you'll always own a Subaru?
[01:24:26] Absolutely. In some capacity. I mean, I'll probably have the cross track for quite a while. If not forever, maybe who knows if I pay it off, why, why would I get rid of it? Cause I still owe money on it. You know, even though I'm chopping it up.
[01:24:41] How many miles do you have on it? Uh, 44,000. Okay. That's pretty decent.
[01:24:49] I kind of bought the Outback to alleviate some of the mileage and just be my drive to work car. Parking that thing in the city is awful. Especially in Boston. It's a little city. A lot of the parking garages, they're really tight even for, you know, like smaller trucks and stuff. So I was just like, you know what, let me buy a station wagon. I'll just drive that to work every day.
[01:25:09] Yeah, that's good. That's good. Well, here's the segment to get to know you a little bit better, but who is Scott? I am a 34 year old guy from Massachusetts who, uh, I'm a dad. I'm a husband. Uh, I am a low voltage electrician.
[01:25:29] Can you explain that? I'm just kidding. Please. That's my favorite thing to do. And I just like working on and ripping a car apart. My perfectly great working vehicle. Yeah, that's good. Good explanation. So nice to meet you, Scott. Nice to meet you.
[01:25:50] So besides your Subaru and the community, what else would you say that you're most passionate about?
[01:25:54] Oh man, this is a hard question for me because like I'm like overly passionate about my car right now. I have severe ADHD, I'd say. And like I collect hobbies. I'd say the car is probably the one hobby that I've kept going for this long. It's been like almost two years or a little more than two years.
[01:26:24] And, uh, yeah, I tried to get really into mountain biking and that fell through even though I moved next to like a mountain bike park. I mean, I... What are some of the other hobbies that you collected and left behind?
[01:26:41] Oh man, junk carpentry. I used to like take home material from work, like make things. Like I made a really cool bar top table out of like a giant electrical cable reel. Oh nice.
[01:26:57] I used to like love making stuff like that. I used to like make lamps for like no reason out of like old, you know, like vintage stuff that I would find at thrift stores and flea markets.
[01:27:07] I don't know. I just, I jump around. I collect Hot Wheels now. I used to be really into comic books. I used to play video games a lot and I don't know, I just different stages of my life. I've just gone through different things. I think that happens.
[01:27:23] I guess my passionate thing now is the car. Yeah, that makes sense. But I do like being outside. I like to hike. That's good. Not recently as much, but that was like my big thing for a long time was getting out and hiking for a long...
[01:27:37] Well, you definitely have a car that can get you to some good hiking spots. I'm sure. For sure. What is a favorite memory from your childhood?
[01:27:49] Oh man. One of my favorite memories from my childhood is being with my family. I can't 100% remember how old I was. I'd say I was probably like seven or eight. Me, my dad, my brother, my mom, we were all up on the Kangamangas Highway up in New Hampshire, which is like this long highway.
[01:28:08] It's like all these awesome scenic views. But like you can pull over and like a bunch of spots and there's like a river that like runs right alongside it. You can like walk out into the river. Oh nice.
[01:28:18] And I just thought that was like the coolest thing ever. And just hanging out in a river with my dad and my brother, for whatever reason, that memory kind of like just sticks in my mind. I actually have like a picture of it framed in my room. It's just like one of my favorite things.
[01:28:36] I don't know. I just remember it vividly from the few childhood memories I have for some reason. That's like one that sticks in my brain all the time.
[01:28:45] Yeah, it's interesting how there's, I mean, we have years and years and days and hours and minutes of our lives and there's only certain things that stick around in there. Yeah, it is kind of weird.
[01:29:00] Well, we know you said what you do for a living, but do you have a dream job? A dream job. It's a really funny answer. My wife, when we were going through these questions earlier, she goes, oh, I can answer that immediately. And she just goes, a mailman.
[01:29:16] Yeah? And I know that's like a ridiculous answer, but for whatever reason, I just think being a mailman would be like the chillest thing ever. I love walking around. I love walking. Yeah. Like I personally try to do like 20,000 steps a day. Nice.
[01:29:34] For whatever reason, I just love walking. That'd be a good job then.
[01:29:40] I deliver the mail. Like I want to meet a bunch of dogs. For whatever reason, I've said that for years. I'm like, oh, I'd love to be a mailman. But the pay isn't as good as what I do now.
[01:29:51] Yeah, that makes it tough. You got to make a living and pay bills and stuff and build your Subaru. Yep. What is something that makes you want to get out of bed every day? Oh, man. Coffee. Yeah.
[01:30:09] I love coffee. And to be honest, I'm a huge morning person. So like I like getting up really early. So I used to get up early all the time before my daughter was born. And I'd go out and I would just go for like a drive. I love driving in the early mornings, especially on the weekends.
[01:30:25] Yeah. I don't know why. But like I just cruise to places I've never been. If I saw a street that I have never been down, I just go down it. That's always fun. I do that sometimes. I'm a morning person.
[01:30:38] Yeah. I mean, I have 106,000 miles on my Crosstrek and a lot of that, most of the, I'd say at least half of the mileage that I have on my car is just local driving. Just driving around because I want to just get out and go for a drive. And we'll do the same thing.
[01:30:55] I just love driving my car. Whatever car it is, I love driving.
[01:30:59] Yeah, me and my son get out a lot and we'll just go drive around. And sometimes we find spots that we haven't been to before and go check it out. It's fun. What is something that makes you want to stay in bed?
[01:31:12] Oh man, my dog because he never wants to get out of bed. And sometimes when I get out and leave him there, I feel bad because he doesn't want to get up. So I'll stay there for a while and I'll rub him. That's nice. Yeah.
[01:31:28] What would be your best bit of advice to give to someone about anything?
[01:31:33] I think, I'm kind of a bad influence when it comes to things. If somebody asks me something like, do you think I should do this? And I always just say, absolutely, just do it. If you want to do it, just do it. What better time than now?
[01:31:49] Yeah, that's very true. Was there anything else that you wanted to share about your cross track or about your journey or about yourself that I didn't ask that we didn't talk about? Honestly, I don't know. Not really. I think we pretty much covered everything.
[01:32:04] Okay. Yeah. Well, it was great having you on. Thank you for taking the time to record. I know you're an hour ahead there. And you said you're a morning person, but I don't know if you go to bed early or not. So hope I'm not keeping you up too late.
[01:32:18] I am also a night owl. I am too. I'm both. I function on like four and a half hours of sleep. Same here. I never get enough sleep. And I like sleeping, but I also like being awake. I like doing stuff. Yep. I feel that.
[01:32:35] Yeah. So yeah, thanks again. And it was great to have you on finally. It's awesome. We've been talking for a while. So just, it was a matter of time. Whoa, how long has it been? It's been quite a while. So it was great. So yeah, thank you.
[01:32:51] I've listened to like every episode and I can't believe I'm actually on now. This has been awesome. Good. Nice. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yeah. So talk to you later and have a good night. Thanks again. All right. You too. Take care. Thanks for having me on.
[01:33:04] You're welcome. All right. Bye. All right. We made it through another episode. Thanks again for tuning in and checking out the podcast. Thank you, Scott, for taking the time to record with me and to share your story and your Subaru journey.
[01:33:20] Again, if you have not been here before this episode, go check out all the other episodes if you enjoyed this one. And if you're not doing so, go give Scott a follow. It's Trekachusetts. That's T-R-E-K-A-C-H-U-S-E-T-T-E-S.

[01:33:50] So talk to you later. Get out there and hit some trails, meet up with some people, have fun in your Subaru and just enjoy the ride. Much Subie love. Raph.
