[00:00:10] [SPEAKER_05]: Hello, this is Sean and you can find me on Instagram at Jamie the Subie. You're listening to episode 184 of the Subie and You podcast

[00:00:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Hello everybody. Welcome to another episode of the Subie and You podcast

[00:00:22] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm trying not to laugh out loud because I was remembering that when I first

[00:00:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Contact or it was actually when Sean first contacted me to ask about what he needs to do on the podcast

[00:00:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I said hey there Jamie

[00:00:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Because I just I really wasn't paying attention it says Sean on his profile

[00:00:40] [SPEAKER_03]: But it's Jamie the Subie and he was like, oh actually my name is Sean

[00:00:45] [SPEAKER_03]: But my car's name is Jamie so we had a little laugh about that

[00:00:48] [SPEAKER_03]: But I forgot about that while we were recording but yes, I have Sean on the podcast this week

[00:00:54] [SPEAKER_03]: He goes by or his car goes by and his account goes by Jamie the Subie

[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_03]: So we will get into this conversation with him here in a little bit

[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_03]: It was great to have him on to talk about his Forester and his journey his Forester has a pretty epic build

[00:01:11] [SPEAKER_03]: And I mean you can just look at his account and see that it's got some really good stuff going on there

[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_00]: The Subie and You podcast is brought to you by eccentric designs

[00:01:21] [SPEAKER_00]: For those of you who don't know

[00:01:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Eccentric designs is a small community driven business that offers custom-fit vinyl overlays for most Subaru models

[00:01:30] [SPEAKER_00]: This includes various designs for the rear reflectors tail lights and side taillights

[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_00]: I also offer fun decal designs like the popular fender stripes and stickers

[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_00]: To find designs for your Subie head on over to eccentricdesigns.com

[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_00]: There's always more projects in the works. So be sure to follow at eccentric.designs on Instagram

[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you so much eccentric designs for sponsoring this Subie and You podcast very very much appreciated

[00:01:56] [SPEAKER_03]: All right, I have another patron question of the week and this one comes from Alex who goes by black on black

[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_03]: SJF XT on Instagram and he asks

[00:02:08] [SPEAKER_03]: What's one thing you wish Subaru could change or wish Subaru would have implemented into your Subaru?

[00:02:16] [SPEAKER_03]: From the factory more power. That's kind of an easy one to answer because I like everything else about my Crosstrek and

[00:02:25] [SPEAKER_03]: But the power is I mean it's decent for what it is and for what I can, you know do with it

[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I don't need a ton of power when I go off-road

[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_03]: But just driving on road, it would definitely be nice to have extra power

[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Especially when I'm like on the highway in the left hand lane trying to go around an 18-wheeler or something

[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_03]: that's going slower than me and some jerk comes right up on my butt and it's just like riding me and

[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm like I'm trying to accelerate to get around the 18-wheeler so I can get over so I can let the maniac get past me

[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_03]: But I I can't go any faster. It's it's really hard. It's just like slugging along and

[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_03]: So in situations like that or like

[00:03:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Accelerating up onto the highway

[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Or just having fun because it's a manual

[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I really wish it would have more power because having more power driving a manual would be so much fun

[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_03]: But and they could do it

[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know why they didn't even the 2.5 at least and you know as an option

[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_03]: But anyway, so that's my answer Alex. Hope you enjoyed my answer and thank you so much for the question

[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_03]: This episode is brought to you by Subaru gear calm

[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_03]: They have released some summer must-have gear

[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Subi fest Midwest coming up. Hope you all have a great time

[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_03]: So, I know it's quite a while's quite a while's quite a while away

[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_03]: But subi fest Texas is coming up in October and I will have some

[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_03]: subi fest Texas only

[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_03]: podcast stickers so I once I get them I will do a little post or a reel and

[00:07:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you so much melee design firm for sponsoring this subi and you podcast and now it's that time

[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_03]: It's time to get into this episode with Sean. So here we go

[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Hey, welcome to the podcast Sean. I have you on

[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you. Thank you. You're welcome. I know we've been talking about it for a while. So

[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I figured if you have to wait a little bit longer than maybe you get some more stuff done and you know

[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah, definitely

[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_05]: I've definitely gotten you know more projects more stories to tell you know than

[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Before yeah, cuz I know when we were chatting at one point

[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_03]: You said can we record a little bit later because you were gonna be doing a cross-country trip and so I was like

[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah, definitely. We can yeah, we can postpone because I want to hear about that

[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_03]: So we can get into that later

[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, so I guess starting off oh, I didn't even write the question down

[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_03]: But sometimes I miss it but I gotta ask the most important question is whether you know this is waffles or pancakes

[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm a I'm a big fan of pancakes. All right good another one. Yeah, I mean your waffles are good

[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_05]: They're they're easier to make the more convenient but just pancakes are just better. Yeah. Thank you. Thank you

[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_03]: There's there's you get it definitely more waffle people than pancake people

[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_03]: But I think the people I think the pancake people is just something about it's like we just know

[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Mm-hmm. I get I get the whole waffle thing

[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_03]: It does make sense and there you can do more things with them

[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah pancakes to me. You're just a little bit better. Yeah, so with your

[00:08:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Forester is this your first Subaru is yep for Subaru second car but for what was your first car?

[00:09:02] [SPEAKER_05]: It was a 2008 Mercury Sable. Okay. Yeah, I've seen this

[00:09:08] [SPEAKER_05]: it was my my grandfather's old car and so it was

[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_05]: First his and then it was my sisters and my other sisters and then it was mine

[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so kind of like a rite of passage in a way, huh a little bit yeah

[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so I just bought my son a 2010 outback 3.6 or a few weeks ago. Okay

[00:09:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and before that he was driving a 2003 Dodge Caravan

[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so he was driving that his whole senior year of high school and then through the summer and then

[00:09:40] [SPEAKER_03]: His sister she drove it back when she was in high school

[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and so, you know, it's kind of like it's not like he had to drive it but you know

[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_03]: It was what was available. So it's you know, it had a we had to do a little bit of work and

[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_03]: like when they when his

[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Grandmother was starting to fix it up because it says mom's mom's van

[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, but when they were starting to fix it up and was telling us how much it was gonna be to fix it

[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Up I'm like this is kind of ridiculous because it's gonna cost more to fix it and get it just to get it going

[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Then the van is even worth but yeah, that's pretty much the same thing that happened with my last car

[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so but he had something to drive which was good. And yeah, you know

[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_03]: He he kind of grew to like it and his friends knew, you know

[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Like this is Luke's car and that kind of stuff. So yeah, but but now he's in the Subaru

[00:10:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Which I'm happy about and I think he is yeah part of the family. Yep. Yep. So

[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Being that it's your first Subaru like going from the sable to the Subaru like why Subaru and why a Forester so

[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_05]: When I saw my car died, I wanted something that kind of fit me a little more and like I could take on like adventures

[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_05]: And stuff I used to build like RC Lego like off-roading cars

[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_05]: And so I've always been interested in like the kind of off-roading stuff

[00:11:04] [SPEAKER_05]: And so I was actually looking at like a next era

[00:11:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, yeah

[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_05]: But they were a little older than I wanted a little too many miles and when I was looking for and just also gas

[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_05]: My leg wasn't great. And so then I started looking at Subarus not exactly sure why

[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_05]: But I kind of realized that that's what I'm looking for good gas mileage, you know still kind of off-roady

[00:11:25] [SPEAKER_05]: So then I narrowed it down to

[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_05]: my Forester now and a blue I think was like a

[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_05]: 2016 or 2017

[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay

[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah

[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_03]: so

[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Like did you know much about Subaru before you bought it or was it just kind of like a new discovery for you?

[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_05]: I didn't know too much about Subaru. No my my sister

[00:11:55] [SPEAKER_05]: She has a 2018 Forester and so she got that

[00:11:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Actually, she had my old car and then she bought that so then that's how I got the the car that I had and

[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_05]: I so that was kind of like my first real experience like hands-on with a

[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Subaru. Yeah, I kind of knew they were a little off-roady

[00:12:12] [SPEAKER_05]: You know

[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_05]: I knew their all-wheel drive is pretty good in like the snow and stuff

[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_05]: Which it was another feature that I liked because I'm up in New England. So I definitely deal with snow

[00:12:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, I don't think the sable would be able to get you to some of the places that you would really want to get to

[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, there are also a few times were like on the way to work like early

[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_05]: You know in the winter like I start sliding all over the road. It was like just front-wheel drive. Yeah

[00:12:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it wasn't great. So what was your experience like the first time driving in snow with a Subaru and then

[00:12:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Realizing like oh, I'm not having the same issues

[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you know that it's all-wheel drive, you know that it's more capable, but was it like

[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Completely just like wow. This thing is amazing

[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I think the first time I drove in snow with it actually I went off-roading

[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_05]: In it yeah

[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah

[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_05]: I think that's the first time I drove in snow and I was honestly surprised with how good it was doing like on

[00:13:12] [SPEAKER_05]: The trail in the snow. It wasn't like too much snow, but

[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it was it was pretty good and then on the drive home it kind of turned into like a blizzard

[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, wow. Yeah, but I mean I was thinking they were pretty good. So that's I was surprised. Yeah

[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_03]: So, you know you bought the Forester because you knew it was like can you know go off-road and you know

[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Take you more places

[00:13:35] [SPEAKER_03]: But did you have any plans to mod it at that point or were you just like oh, I've got this Forester

[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Can take me different places. This is cool. And then you know, like this is my new car

[00:13:46] [SPEAKER_05]: Mm-hmm. There were definitely a few things I wanted to do

[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_05]: I feel like it's everyone's story where they're like, oh, I'm just gonna do tires and a roof basket

[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_05]: But I mean that was my plan just tires in a roof basket. Maybe some lights or something

[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_05]: And then you know next thing I know

[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_03]: my car looks like this

[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so where did I the ideas start coming from to?

[00:14:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Do a lot more than just the wheels and tires in a basket because you know

[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_03]: You look at it and it's like way different from when you first had it

[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Because you have a post where it shows you like where it started and where you're at now and it's completely different

[00:14:25] [SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, obviously you had a couple of things in mind, but then then a lot more came along with it

[00:14:32] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I don't I mean and just kind of looking on the internet just like I why do people do with their Subarus?

[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_05]: I remember I forget the name of the guy but he has a I think he had a white outback

[00:14:45] [SPEAKER_05]: Wilderness and it's like making YouTube videos showing like what mods and stuff

[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_05]: And so that's where I got like the idea of like maybe I'll do like a lift or a spare tire carrier

[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_05]: And then just you know, eventually finding like, you know

[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_05]: The whole Instagram community and that just you know opened up a whole nother world of the possibilities

[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_03]: For for what I can do with the car. Yeah, it's you get into Instagram and you start

[00:15:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Connecting with people and you're like, oh, oh, oh

[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so so obviously he had an inspiration on you

[00:15:18] [SPEAKER_03]: And then were there some other accounts that you saw that like gave you some inspiration of things that you wanted to do

[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_03]: And kind of the path that you took

[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I remember another kind of early super saw it was a white cross trek

[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_05]: I want to say might have been like absoll trek. Yes, there's an amia. Yeah

[00:15:37] [SPEAKER_05]: I saw that pretty early that I got a few ideas from that

[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_05]: But yeah, I mean, you know is looking I made the Instagram account

[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_05]: I want to say it was a feelings after I got the car after I had like tires and roof basket and some lights

[00:15:51] [SPEAKER_05]: And just because originally I just was looking on like my regular Instagram and I was like maybe I'll make a page

[00:15:57] [SPEAKER_05]: But then just see my explore page full of you know

[00:16:00] [SPEAKER_05]: All the cool offer it's degrees and like oh I want to do that

[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_05]: I want to do that and then just slowly making like a list of all the stuff I want to do. Yeah, so

[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Like when you started making the list have you?

[00:16:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Completed that original list because I'm guessing that you started making a list and then just added to it and added to it

[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_05]: And added to it. Yeah, so yeah have actually now I have a

[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_05]: Spreadsheet of everything I want to do and so, you know like things get you know

[00:16:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Knocked off of it and then other things are put on

[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_05]: So like all the original stuff I've done but the list somehow just keeps on getting bigger and bigger even though I

[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Complete a lot of stuff. Yeah, cuz I mean you look at and it's like what else can you do to it?

[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Not only do you have a lot of mods, but you have like stuff up on your roof basket

[00:16:47] [SPEAKER_03]: On the sides so you have all these not just the mods, but you have all this gear

[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_03]: It looks like you're taking with you as well. Yes

[00:16:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but like so when you started doing all the mods and everything

[00:16:59] [SPEAKER_03]: What was like the first really big mod that you decided to do?

[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_05]: I'd probably say the first big mod was my original lift. I did that after I got

[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_05]: Tires and a roof basket and lights and stuff, but that was like the first kind of like

[00:17:15] [SPEAKER_05]: This is an actual mod kind of mod, you know, I suppose they're just throwing on tires and a basket

[00:17:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and so like right now you have the race works coil overs. What did you have before that?

[00:17:29] [SPEAKER_05]: I had the the Rough Country

[00:17:31] [SPEAKER_05]: two-inch

[00:17:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Lifted struts. Okay. Gotcha. Yeah. All right, and then

[00:17:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean I was looking at your page

[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_03]: So you did that big mod what were like some of the other big things because you know

[00:17:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, there's there's a lot of little things that people do like, you know

[00:17:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean like oh so I guess at one point you decided to cut your bumper before

[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_03]: You really did anything else was that just for clearance purposes and were you?

[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Nervous about cutting your bumper like oh my gosh. I'm cutting into my car. Yes, so

[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Partly for clearance partly for looks and then it was also

[00:18:13] [SPEAKER_05]: Right before like the one year anniversary of me getting the car and I was like I need to do something

[00:18:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Like kind of big before the year for one year and so looking back like it

[00:18:24] [SPEAKER_05]: It's not that big of a thing. But at the time it felt pretty big being I was definitely nervous

[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_05]: I kind of was thinking about it for a while

[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_05]: But then exactly you know how to do it there weren't like too many

[00:18:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Like guides online or anything for it, but I remember one morning

[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_05]: I just like woke up at like four or five in the morning and I was like man, I'm bored

[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_05]: Maybe maybe this is the day and so like I got up

[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_05]: It was like, you know six in the morning or so by then marked it all out

[00:18:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Just went at it with my angle grinder and then you know rest is history

[00:18:57] [SPEAKER_03]: So were you prepping it for a future bumper like were you cutting it at a certain level for that or were you just cutting it?

[00:19:04] [SPEAKER_05]: To cut it back then it was just cutting into cut it

[00:19:07] [SPEAKER_05]: I did have like an idea of one day I wanted the bumper but I wasn't thinking about it until you know

[00:19:14] [SPEAKER_05]: A good while after that about like where I'm gonna put it. Okay

[00:19:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah

[00:19:18] [SPEAKER_03]: and then like

[00:19:19] [SPEAKER_03]: You know one of the biggest things that you can notice looking at it from the front is you've got your primitive skid plate

[00:19:26] [SPEAKER_03]: And then you've got like a skid plate on top of your skid plate, you know at an angle

[00:19:30] [SPEAKER_03]: So is that a custom skid plate that's on there attached to?

[00:19:35] [SPEAKER_03]: and is it attached or like welded to the

[00:19:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Top or the lip of the primitive racing and then to the bumper

[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_05]: So it's it's not attached to the primitive plate right now

[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_05]: It's it's actually just a piece of stainless steel like just sheet metal

[00:19:50] [SPEAKER_05]: I got it free from work

[00:19:52] [SPEAKER_05]: So I was gonna do an aluminum plate on there in the same shape and everything

[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm still gonna do that. Just I haven't gotten around to it yet

[00:19:59] [SPEAKER_05]: But yeah, I kind of want it to flow, you know from the bumper into the skid plate itself

[00:20:04] [SPEAKER_05]: so, but you know, it's one solid thing if I you know

[00:20:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Don't have the you know, right approach angle or whatever, but then that just bolted to the the bumper. Okay. All right

[00:20:16] [SPEAKER_03]: and uh

[00:20:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Looking at all the mods that you've done over time. What would you say is your favorite? I

[00:20:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Would say probably

[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_05]: That's a tough one

[00:20:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, there's a lot you've got a lot going on. Yeah, I would say probably my lift. Okay

[00:20:33] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah, I'm

[00:20:34] [SPEAKER_05]: super happy with how that turned out and

[00:20:38] [SPEAKER_05]: Like just the adjustability of the race works

[00:20:40] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes, I'm kind of too now. I want to I had it a little bit lower. I just actually raised up

[00:20:46] [SPEAKER_05]: About

[00:20:47] [SPEAKER_05]: Like three quarters of an inch in the front and then about inch and a half in the rear

[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_05]: so total height is like

[00:20:55] [SPEAKER_05]: About two maybe a little over in the front and then about three three and a half in the rear

[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, and that's above what the stock height is. Yes. Okay. What is the adjustability range of those?

[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_05]: So you can adjust the actual lift itself from about like I think it's like two to four inches

[00:21:14] [SPEAKER_05]: And then you can also just like how much

[00:21:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Preload there is in the springs. You can also adjust the preload in the shocks which helps a lot with

[00:21:24] [SPEAKER_05]: All the weight I have in the roof when I'm going around turns and stuff also because I yeah, give me my sway bars

[00:21:29] [SPEAKER_05]: so

[00:21:30] [SPEAKER_05]: Being able to crank up the the preload on the shocks helps with the body roll. Nice. Nice

[00:21:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, did have you ever felt like it's gonna roll or are you like like?

[00:21:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Not

[00:21:42] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I mean you definitely feel the body roll it it feels a little bit like a like a boat

[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_05]: But I've never been and I'm like, oh no, I'm about to roll over. Okay, that's good. Yeah

[00:21:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then like what were some of the other mods that you started to do early on where you like we're kind

[00:21:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Of checking off your list

[00:22:00] [SPEAKER_05]: So actually right after I did my first lift

[00:22:03] [SPEAKER_05]: Is when I did skid plates because I was waiting to do skip plates until I have at a lift just for the

[00:22:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Ground clearance that I'm gonna lose with the plates. So I did that I think I did

[00:22:14] [SPEAKER_05]: Some more lights. I know I did like roof boxes and stuff

[00:22:18] [SPEAKER_05]: And then also the first generation of my window panels on the sides

[00:22:23] [SPEAKER_03]: What are those exactly?

[00:22:26] [SPEAKER_05]: So those are like the the Orbis over landing ones. Okay. Yeah, but at the time

[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_05]: I didn't realize that the Orbis ones would fit my car. So I made my own

[00:22:36] [SPEAKER_05]: They kind of worked out but then I revised it I used some of the hardware from Orbis

[00:22:41] [SPEAKER_05]: But just with my own design for the the panels. Okay, that's what I have now. That's good. Yeah, it works out

[00:22:47] [SPEAKER_03]: It's nice when you can kind of make two different things work together

[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah

[00:22:52] [SPEAKER_03]: So what is it that you do?

[00:22:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Because you said that you got the skid plate or the plate the front plate that goes above the primitive plate from work

[00:23:01] [SPEAKER_03]: So it seems like you've gotten some stuff from there that you can I guess

[00:23:05] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, actually all of the the bumper or I guess just a tube of the bumper that I have

[00:23:11] [SPEAKER_05]: I actually got that from work. I'm actually a woodworker

[00:23:15] [SPEAKER_05]: so the the metal we had were just actual just scrap from a few projects, but okay how much of your

[00:23:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Forrester have is DIY because you said that you've got that front skid plate the panels on the sides are there

[00:23:29] [SPEAKER_03]: And then you said the bumper is

[00:23:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Is the bumper custom-made? Yep. Yeah the bumper I custom-made and then also the other drawer system in the back

[00:23:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, nice. Yeah

[00:23:40] [SPEAKER_03]: so what would you say that like has been I guess the

[00:23:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Biggest or most dramatic change in the Forrester as far as I guess the way that it looks I

[00:23:52] [SPEAKER_05]: would say once again the lift and then

[00:23:56] [SPEAKER_05]: After I did the lift I also got bigger tires and smaller wheels and so

[00:24:01] [SPEAKER_05]: That all together really changed the look from the original

[00:24:05] [SPEAKER_05]: 17 inch steel rims that I was on with the kind of sagging lift

[00:24:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so do you have 16 or 15 inch wheels now 15 15? Okay. Yeah

[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_03]: I like the way the 15 inch wheels look with more tire and yes

[00:24:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Of course that's good for off-roading because then you've got more rubber and when you air down and everything so

[00:24:26] [SPEAKER_03]: What has been like the most complicated or most difficult?

[00:24:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Mod to install and have you?

[00:24:33] [SPEAKER_03]: installed all of the mods yourself

[00:24:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, all the work that I've done on the car. I've done except for like alignments

[00:24:42] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah, I would say the the most difficult one would probably be

[00:24:47] [SPEAKER_05]: Maybe the bumper just because I had to you know, I

[00:24:50] [SPEAKER_05]: Was kind of learning how to weld while doing it. So it was a little tricky but got it or I would also say

[00:24:56] [SPEAKER_05]: my new

[00:24:58] [SPEAKER_05]: radiator and

[00:25:00] [SPEAKER_05]: CVT cooler those are a little tricky just because I'm not super familiar with like cooling systems, but okay got in the end

[00:25:06] [SPEAKER_03]: So how long did it take you like the design process for the bumper?

[00:25:11] [SPEAKER_03]: And then how long did it take to make like, you know going from just the thought of it and then to actually installing?

[00:25:17] [SPEAKER_03]: It what was that time frame? I

[00:25:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Was thinking about it for a while. I was thinking about it for a good few months, but then

[00:25:26] [SPEAKER_05]: It took about I want to say maybe like two three weeks from like start to finish building it

[00:25:31] [SPEAKER_05]: originally, I was gonna design it in in CAD first, but I

[00:25:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Was like, you know, I'm just gonna just wing it, you know build it on the car

[00:25:41] [SPEAKER_05]: But yeah about two or three weeks. Okay, that's not too bad. Yeah, no, so

[00:25:47] [SPEAKER_03]: You've had your Forester for just over two years and at year well after you had it for a year

[00:25:54] [SPEAKER_03]: You said you put about 40,000 miles on it. So when you bought it because it's

[00:25:59] [SPEAKER_03]: 2015 how many miles did it have on it when you bought it? I think I had

[00:26:05] [SPEAKER_05]: Somewhere around like 52 or 54 thousand I think

[00:26:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, and now so now you've had it for another year

[00:26:13] [SPEAKER_03]: So you've had it for two years how many miles have you put on at the second year just about

[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_05]: 30 or 40 thousand because I'm now

[00:26:22] [SPEAKER_05]: Like a hundred thirty thousand right now. Okay. Yeah, that's not bad

[00:26:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, I drive a little bit. Yeah, I do too

[00:26:29] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean mine I will have mine for it'll be four years in September and I'm at

[00:26:37] [SPEAKER_03]: 110,000 miles now. All right. Yeah, you're

[00:26:43] [SPEAKER_03]: How much of your miles would you say are trail miles

[00:26:47] [SPEAKER_05]: Not as many as I would like I would say

[00:26:51] [SPEAKER_05]: most of it is

[00:26:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Like just going on trips in general, but not necessarily on trails

[00:26:57] [SPEAKER_05]: I also put a lot of miles going up and down from Connecticut to New Jersey where my family is. Okay, so

[00:27:04] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, and also just going to a lot of meets and stuff and all around the New England area

[00:27:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Because I'm pretty pretty far south and in Connecticut so like going up to Mass or even like New Hampshire Vermont stuff like that

[00:27:15] [SPEAKER_03]: So how far like when you go up to visit family? How far of a drive is that?

[00:27:19] [SPEAKER_03]: It's about like two and a half three hours. Okay. Yeah, so I guess like maybe 150 miles or so

[00:27:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, just about okay

[00:27:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, cuz I know like so my girlfriend lives in Dallas and whenever I go visit her

[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I think it's like roughly about 250 miles

[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_03]: One way. Yeah, if I'm going up there like twice a month, you know, that's almost that's like a thousand miles a month

[00:27:45] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah, and you know, but I don't go up there twice a month every month, but you know, I I try to like

[00:27:52] [SPEAKER_03]: she's like your all of your miles have not come from visiting me because we kind of calculated it at one point and I

[00:27:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Think like it's only like 20 or 25 percent of my mileage comes from visiting her

[00:28:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Because again, I do drive a lot but I do kind of like you say you drive around the New England area a lot

[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Like I drive around the Houston area a lot and Houston is so big

[00:28:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean it takes like an hour just to get from one side to the other. Geez

[00:28:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, it's pretty big because like I have I have my stepbrother lives or he used to live down in Leek City

[00:28:25] [SPEAKER_03]: But they just moved and it takes

[00:28:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Usually takes a little over an hour to get to their house and and you can go like a couple of different ways

[00:28:33] [SPEAKER_03]: To get to their house and no matter which way you go. It's like at least an hour or a little bit

[00:28:38] [SPEAKER_03]: So but yeah, that's where a lot of my mileage comes from

[00:28:41] [SPEAKER_03]: so

[00:28:43] [SPEAKER_03]: so and then also like like I mentioned earlier you have you have all these mods and

[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, it's pretty obvious that you've done something for you know drastic with your Forester

[00:28:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it looks as though you also have a lot of gear like on your roof rack and on the side panels

[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, so like what all do you have as far as gear is concerned and then on the outside and then I'm sure you've got

[00:29:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Gear on the inside that we wouldn't normally see

[00:29:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, well, I guess on the roof. I have

[00:29:15] [SPEAKER_05]: At my hijack. I have my badlands Jack. I have a bunch of spare parts in the boxes

[00:29:21] [SPEAKER_05]: I have water storage and a shower system on the roof

[00:29:25] [SPEAKER_05]: My air down and air up system

[00:29:29] [SPEAKER_05]: Traction boards now these do my spare tire, but now they're my roof. I think that's about it for the top the sides

[00:29:34] [SPEAKER_05]: I have

[00:29:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Some recovery equipment. I'll also have recovered from it on the roof

[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_05]: They recover equipment. I have a shovel I have

[00:29:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Hammock I have a water filter. I have a jet boil. That's all in like the little black box on the

[00:29:50] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, and then I

[00:29:57] [SPEAKER_05]: And then the inside it's just pretty much just tools in like the drawer system and then just the

[00:30:07] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I think that's about it because I don't think yeah all my spare parts are in the roof boxes

[00:30:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay

[00:30:12] [SPEAKER_03]: So how much of the gear do you use and have you used some of the spare parts by getting out on trails?

[00:30:19] [SPEAKER_05]: And stuff. Yeah, I've I've used a few spare parts, especially axles. That's probably what I've used most

[00:30:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I definitely use the gear that I have

[00:30:30] [SPEAKER_05]: My house. I don't have like a garage or anything. So pretty much my garage is my car

[00:30:35] [SPEAKER_05]: So okay, you know, it's just easier to keep it with the car instead of having to like bring it

[00:30:40] [SPEAKER_05]: You know, I'm on the second floor of my house. So bring it like downstairs and everything. Okay

[00:30:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so with all the gear and the mods and everything like what is your gas mileage like and

[00:30:51] [SPEAKER_03]: And is it you know, is it chugging along sometimes and you're having to go uphill with all the added weight I

[00:30:59] [SPEAKER_05]: Definitely. Yeah, so it's my gas mileage isn't actually that bad

[00:31:04] [SPEAKER_05]: I try to stay above 20 like my my goal is to stay above 20

[00:31:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay, as long as I'm above 20, I'm happy. So I average about

[00:31:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Between like 18 and 22 miles per gallon

[00:31:15] [SPEAKER_05]: So, you know not not terrible for you know all the stuff I have

[00:31:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, they all that way definitely you can feel it like going up hills and stuff and then

[00:31:26] [SPEAKER_05]: especially with temperatures

[00:31:27] [SPEAKER_05]: You know the CVT and oil looks to get a little hot but yeah hopefully with the new radiator and CVT cooler

[00:31:34] [SPEAKER_05]: I just put in so far. It's been

[00:31:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Putting in the work cool it down a little bit better. How long ago did you put those in? I

[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Did the radiator and fans last week and then I did the CVT cooler?

[00:31:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Two days ago, I think oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah, so it's very new very new

[00:31:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I was trying to get it done before Boxer Fest because I'm gonna be a good drive down there

[00:32:00] [SPEAKER_03]: How far of a drive is that I want to say it's about five or six hours. Okay? Yeah, that's a pretty decent drive

[00:32:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Not terrible, but it's yeah, it's not like so far away that you're like, oh man

[00:32:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I just can't drive it. So that's good. Yeah, cuz like

[00:32:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Subi fest Texas for me is about four hours away. Okay. Yeah, that's a little bit of all. Yeah, it's not bad

[00:32:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm used to it. Like like I said since my girlfriend lives up there. I'm so used to the drive. So it's easy

[00:32:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Gotcha. Yeah, you said you take trips a lot

[00:32:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you go camping a lot because you said that you have a portable shower and you have like a jet boil

[00:32:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Another thing so it's and you've got your drawer system

[00:32:37] [SPEAKER_03]: So it sounds like you've got like a camping setup. Is that what a lot of that is used for?

[00:32:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, especially like the the shower system and the jet boil and everything

[00:32:46] [SPEAKER_05]: I don't go as camping as often as I want to with so the the trips I do are just you know for off-roading

[00:32:53] [SPEAKER_05]: But you know, I when I do get out there. I definitely have a whole setup

[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_03]: And then how long do you usually go out for is it for a few nights or just one night?

[00:33:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Normally, it's just like weekend trips. Okay, that's not bad

[00:33:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah

[00:33:05] [SPEAKER_03]: It's nice to have all of that and how do you use the shower setup a lot or when or every time that you go

[00:33:12] [SPEAKER_03]: out for a weekend I

[00:33:15] [SPEAKER_05]: Put it up there because of my month-long trip

[00:33:17] [SPEAKER_05]: So I use it out there a lot, but I've been camping since that trip

[00:33:22] [SPEAKER_05]: So I have news on either any other trips. Okay, gotcha

[00:33:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and I saw that you have a snorkel

[00:33:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Did you did you get the snorkel because you went through some like water that was too high and had a mishap kind

[00:33:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Of like gym little Ruby Suvi or was it like more of a preventative thing of like, okay

[00:33:42] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm gonna I haven't had any issues, but I want to try to minimize issues and I'm gonna put the snorkel on

[00:33:49] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it was more preventative than anything. I definitely go through some some pretty big puddles and stuff and

[00:33:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I've gotten water over the hood before the snorkel and so

[00:33:59] [SPEAKER_05]: Angelo that white wagon he was selling a snorkel that he bought

[00:34:03] [SPEAKER_05]: sounds like you know what I'm gonna I'm gonna pick it up I'm gonna put it on and

[00:34:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I guess

[00:34:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Get it affixed to the outside of the forester because obviously you have to because you have to cut into

[00:34:21] [SPEAKER_03]: The part of the I guess the hood or the side so the fender. Yeah. Oh, yeah

[00:34:26] [SPEAKER_03]: So what is involved in that it honestly wasn't too bad?

[00:34:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Hey, it took me a while to build the courage to do it

[00:34:33] [SPEAKER_05]: But yeah, you really only you drill a hole for the actual snorkel to go inside

[00:34:37] [SPEAKER_05]: You drill a few holes for actual mounting for it you take out like your stock airbox

[00:34:42] [SPEAKER_05]: You put any filter in and then just run some

[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_05]: tubing like through the fender into the air filter and then into the actual

[00:34:52] [SPEAKER_05]: intake manifold

[00:34:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, and so with your

[00:34:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Radiator and fans and then your transmission cooler and just I guess heat in general

[00:35:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I've been seeing you know, a lot of people have been doing the hood louvers. Is that something that's on your on your list to do?

[00:35:11] [SPEAKER_05]: I've thought about it. Yeah, okay. I might do it pretty soon. Okay. Yeah, the most recent one

[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I've seen was Gail Norwegian girl 21. She just had her. Yeah. Yeah, yeah

[00:35:22] [SPEAKER_03]: It's you know, it's a good look

[00:35:24] [SPEAKER_03]: But it's definitely it makes sense for people that are going out and generating a lot of heat by

[00:35:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Traveling on trails and everything so

[00:35:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Not something I mean, it's it probably wouldn't be a bad idea down here just because it gets so hot

[00:35:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah, I bet but I you know, it's not hot for like

[00:35:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Reasons of me going on trails and you know revving up my engine and stuff and getting my engine hot

[00:35:52] [SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, but it's a good look. I don't know. It's something I would ever do

[00:35:56] [SPEAKER_05]: but it seems kind of I think I might do it cuz there are definitely times where like

[00:35:59] [SPEAKER_05]: You know, I just get done driving and open the hood and just like a wave of heat and so

[00:36:04] [SPEAKER_05]: You know, I know he'd definitely escape hopefully faster with oh, yeah

[00:36:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, have it dissipate through those and yeah, definitely help because yeah, it's just got to get trapped under there pretty badly

[00:36:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I was looking through your feed and I saw that you were out by yourself at one point and you got stuck in the snow

[00:36:24] [SPEAKER_03]: So have you gotten stuck any other times or was that the only time?

[00:36:29] [SPEAKER_05]: I've gotten stuck a handful of times. Yeah. Yeah

[00:36:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, and then have you ever gotten stuck in the mud?

[00:36:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Surprisingly never in mud there been a few close calls is actually the first time I went off-roading

[00:36:43] [SPEAKER_05]: Before I had tires or anything. I think I had a roof basket

[00:36:47] [SPEAKER_05]: only but I had just you know, still street tires, I went through a big mud puddle and

[00:36:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Almost got stuck. But you know surprisingly I made it through

[00:36:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, no mud I've only gotten stuck in in dirt and snow. Okay

[00:37:02] [SPEAKER_03]: So what was that experience like going off-road for the first time?

[00:37:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Were you were you nervous about it and and were you by yourself or were you with other people? Yeah, I was by myself

[00:37:14] [SPEAKER_05]: You know when I first started going out was pretty much only doing solo stuff

[00:37:18] [SPEAKER_05]: You know, I was I was a little nervous but it was it was a lot of fun. I

[00:37:22] [SPEAKER_05]: It opened my eyes to the the possibilities of you know what the car could do

[00:37:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then now you carry spare axles and stuff. So, you know, you've come a long way

[00:37:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah

[00:37:34] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah, that's I think that's that's so funny because like

[00:37:38] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, we don't really have anything down here that is worthy of carrying around a bunch of extra parts

[00:37:44] [SPEAKER_03]: So we don't get into anything that crazy

[00:37:46] [SPEAKER_05]: But yeah, it's a blessing and a curse, you know

[00:37:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, well, I mean it's it's you know

[00:37:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Good things to have especially if you because it seems like people are going off-road enough that they

[00:37:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Start to discover what's gonna fail? Yeah, depending on what they're doing. And so it's like, oh that's failing

[00:38:06] [SPEAKER_03]: So let me just bring some spare parts. Yeah, let me just tow a whole extra car behind me and I

[00:38:13] [SPEAKER_05]: Pretty much need to do that sometimes

[00:38:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but that's that's pretty funny. So like so when you go out now

[00:38:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Are you still doing some solo trips or you mostly going out with other people?

[00:38:22] [SPEAKER_05]: Most of the time I'm going out with other people and nowadays I still I like to go out solo

[00:38:27] [SPEAKER_05]: You know, it's it's kind of relaxing just to go solo

[00:38:30] [SPEAKER_05]: But it's also a lot of fun to go out of people and also you have oh, yeah

[00:38:34] [SPEAKER_05]: No kind of the insurance that if you do get stuck you can't self recover that you know

[00:38:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Someone else will be there to help. Yeah, so you mentioned earlier that you've gotten stuck in the dirt

[00:38:43] [SPEAKER_03]: How did you get stuck in the dirt?

[00:38:45] [SPEAKER_05]: So I got stuck in the dirt twice one of them

[00:38:48] [SPEAKER_05]: It was I was going up kind of like a little embankment

[00:38:52] [SPEAKER_05]: But I just didn't have enough momentum. And so I was backing down

[00:38:55] [SPEAKER_05]: and I think I I made a turn like sideways a little bit and

[00:39:00] [SPEAKER_05]: So I would like went off the trail a little bit and then there was a tree behind me

[00:39:05] [SPEAKER_05]: So I couldn't back out like down the hill and it was just a little too steep to

[00:39:09] [SPEAKER_05]: To get up over the embankment going forwards

[00:39:13] [SPEAKER_05]: So I just had to throw traction boards underneath the tires the rear tires and then slowly crawl out

[00:39:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Eventually, I got it and then yeah the second time I was up in Vermont. I was camping and so the

[00:39:28] [SPEAKER_05]: There's like a bunch of dirt roads

[00:39:30] [SPEAKER_05]: I was driving around and they're a little narrow this one part

[00:39:33] [SPEAKER_05]: there was a truck coming towards me and

[00:39:36] [SPEAKER_05]: So I slowed down went off to the side a little bit

[00:39:38] [SPEAKER_05]: But I didn't realize how steep it was on the side

[00:39:41] [SPEAKER_05]: And so I went to the side and just the whole car just slid sideways

[00:39:45] [SPEAKER_05]: And I was like it felt like I was at like a 45 degree angle

[00:39:48] [SPEAKER_05]: There's a picture of it. I think I posted it and so luckily the the guy

[00:39:53] [SPEAKER_05]: You know saw that I I couldn't get back up and he backed up and you know

[00:39:58] [SPEAKER_05]: I connected a tow strap to the front of my car and to his car and he was able to pull me out

[00:40:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, that's good. Yeah, well at least he stopped, you know, and yeah going that was nice of him

[00:40:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I could definitely not suffer cover there. I was needed a winch or something. Yeah. Yeah, you got lucky in that one

[00:40:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, I guess if there hadn't been another car you wouldn't have had to move over like that

[00:40:18] [SPEAKER_05]: So yeah, so that worked out. I was lucky was a truck that could pull me out and not like yeah a little tiny sedan

[00:40:24] [SPEAKER_03]: So who are the people that you get out the most with whenever you are getting out?

[00:40:28] [SPEAKER_05]: so it's mostly pretty much just the adventure one crew so like

[00:40:33] [SPEAKER_05]: BPM X track transformer track truck at you sits

[00:40:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Little blue Roo s cargo that white wagon

[00:40:42] [SPEAKER_05]: to create outdoors

[00:40:44] [SPEAKER_05]: extract Matt

[00:40:47] [SPEAKER_05]: Asher's OBW I think is using them is yeah, mostly those guys and how often do you all get out together?

[00:40:54] [SPEAKER_05]: In the summer, it's we've been going out fairly often every few weeks or so

[00:40:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Especially after I got like I got back from my trip

[00:41:00] [SPEAKER_05]: It was like it felt like every weekend I was getting out. So yeah, it's every few weeks

[00:41:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, and then did you connect with most of most of them through Instagram?

[00:41:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I mean that's that's I think where I met all of them

[00:41:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, and then like so when you started connecting with people on Instagram

[00:41:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you remember like the first time that you actually met somebody in person?

[00:41:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes, I do. I it was a stage the cross track. Oh, yeah

[00:41:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I know and I've only seen him once since he's been here cuz he just he's like an hour and a half

[00:41:34] [SPEAKER_03]: away and just schedule and stuff but

[00:41:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, he's a good guy. Oh, yeah. Yeah, but it was it was my first meet

[00:41:43] [SPEAKER_05]: It was in like I think it's in like Central Connecticut

[00:41:47] [SPEAKER_05]: And so, you know, I saw like a bunch of people that like I didn't know it wasn't just super

[00:41:51] [SPEAKER_05]: There's a lot of just regular, you know other overland builds. Yeah, and I saw him pull up and I was like

[00:41:56] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh my gosh, it's him. Oh, yeah

[00:41:59] [SPEAKER_05]: But I got a document with him, you know

[00:42:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think that's one of the most exciting things is whenever you're connecting with people and then you get to actually meet

[00:42:09] [SPEAKER_03]: In person and yeah and you know see their build in person too because it looks so different when you see it in person

[00:42:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Like you can see it online pictures videos and stuff and then you see it in person. It's like, well, that's really cool. Yeah

[00:42:22] [SPEAKER_03]: What are like whenever y'all get out and go hit the trails and stuff?

[00:42:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Like what are some of the places near you that you get out to?

[00:42:29] [SPEAKER_05]: We we hit the Thompson trails in Connecticut or an island a lot

[00:42:33] [SPEAKER_05]: That's like the main place because it's kind of just central to everyone and like Rhode Island and Mass in Connecticut

[00:42:39] [SPEAKER_05]: And so the trails out there pretty fun

[00:42:41] [SPEAKER_05]: They're a bunch of you know

[00:42:42] [SPEAKER_05]: Real deep like mud puddles that you can have fun in and then also up in Massachusetts

[00:42:49] [SPEAKER_05]: October mountain

[00:42:51] [SPEAKER_05]: That's a little more. Let's say a little more like technical trails little rockier

[00:42:55] [SPEAKER_05]: It's a lot of fun. And then there are a few little trails in like central Connecticut that we get out to sometimes

[00:43:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, and I'm guessing these are like branches of trails that you can

[00:43:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Adventure out onto or is it just like a few different trails that you go over again and again

[00:43:13] [SPEAKER_05]: It's it there they branch out a good amount especially like a like Thompson and October mountain

[00:43:20] [SPEAKER_05]: October mountain really sprawls for a while. There's a lot of trails that like I've even explored yet

[00:43:25] [SPEAKER_05]: I saw to uh, they'll explore

[00:43:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah all you people with all these trails that you haven't explored yet

[00:43:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. Yeah, we we don't have that problem down here unfortunately

[00:43:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, a good problem to have yeah, there's because there's so much private land down here and like yeah

[00:43:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Last this was it last weekend

[00:43:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, yeah, so this past weekend. I took Luke out to some trails and it's it's just like a national forest

[00:43:51] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's just it's really just gravel roads and it's flat and you know

[00:43:57] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it's nice being in the woods, you know getting away from the city and everything

[00:44:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Like there's nothing technical except for when there's a tree laying across the road and your son says hey

[00:44:08] [SPEAKER_03]: There's a path here through the woods that we can go through and go around the tree only to find that there's you know

[00:44:14] [SPEAKER_03]: A washed out road on the other side down down the ways from the road

[00:44:18] [SPEAKER_03]: And then you have to go back through the woods and then it's dark now and having to navigate it

[00:44:24] [SPEAKER_03]: So that was I think he may have gotten a bit of a puncture because he said that his

[00:44:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Driver side front tire keeps getting low

[00:44:32] [SPEAKER_03]: So I don't know if he got a puncture there if he got picked up a nail or a screw or something somewhere else

[00:44:38] [SPEAKER_03]: But I got to go look at that. Yeah, so he's gonna take it in tomorrow to get it patched up hopefully

[00:44:43] [SPEAKER_03]: all right, so you took this cross-country trip and

[00:44:49] [SPEAKER_03]: When did you leave and then like how long were you gone? And then how many total miles did you drive?

[00:44:55] [SPEAKER_05]: So I left May 1st I did I got back around I want to say may

[00:45:04] [SPEAKER_05]: like

[00:45:04] [SPEAKER_05]: 27th or so 28

[00:45:08] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, and then it was a just there were 10,000 miles round trip Wow

[00:45:15] [SPEAKER_03]: That's a lot of miles for one trip. Yeah, so did you go by yourself or did you go with somebody?

[00:45:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, I went solo. Okay. How long had you been planning that?

[00:45:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Started planning it. I want to say

[00:45:29] [SPEAKER_05]: like the previous

[00:45:33] [SPEAKER_05]: Might have been with the previous summer

[00:45:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Is when I got like the initial idea started planning it out a little more in depth and like the fall and then

[00:45:41] [SPEAKER_05]: You know just kind of preparing for the trip, you know

[00:45:44] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay getting all the mods that I needed check and everything

[00:45:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Where did you leave from and what was like the final destination across the country that you got to?

[00:45:53] [SPEAKER_05]: So I left from Connecticut but the

[00:45:56] [SPEAKER_05]: There really was no final destination. The the destination was

[00:46:00] [SPEAKER_05]: Like I guess every stop I made on the way, so it was mainly like national parks

[00:46:05] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay, like I mean kind of you know destinations and then also, you know kind of just exploring off-road

[00:46:11] [SPEAKER_05]: You know in the Pacific Northwest or Southern California

[00:46:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, nice some good spots. Had you oh, yeah, had you ever been out to the West Coast before?

[00:46:21] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, so growing up my family and I took a handful of trips out West

[00:46:26] [SPEAKER_05]: remember we took a trip to like Yellowstone and Grand Teton once and then also to

[00:46:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Like Yosemite and also been up to Washington. So

[00:46:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Nice

[00:46:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Did you have it all mapped out as far as like the I guess like them, you know

[00:46:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Because you said you explored some off-road trails

[00:46:44] [SPEAKER_03]: But as far as like you had you said you went to national parks and stuff

[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Did you have most of the route mapped out going out there and coming back or did you just kind of wing some of it?

[00:46:55] [SPEAKER_05]: I had like a rough plan of where I was gonna go and like the stop tells gonna make on the way

[00:47:01] [SPEAKER_05]: But yeah, I kind of did a little more than that because the original route was about 7,000 miles

[00:47:07] [SPEAKER_05]: So I put on an extra 3,000

[00:47:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah, I didn't plan on going as far south as I did into Southern, California

[00:47:15] [SPEAKER_05]: I think that's where all the miles came from just pretty much going all the way down, California into

[00:47:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Nevada and then Utah. Okay, and then back up. Did you drive along the Pacific Coast Highway? I

[00:47:30] [SPEAKER_03]: I want to say I think I did. Yeah. Yeah, it's that's really nice out there. Yes. I want to do that drive again

[00:47:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Mm-hmm. So how many states did you end up hitting? I

[00:47:42] [SPEAKER_05]: want to say

[00:47:45] [SPEAKER_03]: 19 Wow, I think yeah, that's pretty good

[00:47:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Mm-hmm. Can you list them all?

[00:47:53] [SPEAKER_03]: If I look at a map I could yeah

[00:47:54] [SPEAKER_03]: No, that's that's cool. So did you have any issues driving all that distance and you know

[00:48:02] [SPEAKER_03]: All the miles and just the different places that you went or did your forest or a holdout the whole time?

[00:48:07] [SPEAKER_05]: I I had a few little issues

[00:48:09] [SPEAKER_05]: The the first one was in North Dakota outside of Bismarck

[00:48:14] [SPEAKER_05]: my rear I

[00:48:16] [SPEAKER_05]: Think it was my rear passenger side wheel bearing. I gave out on me. Yeah, it was pretty bad

[00:48:22] [SPEAKER_05]: I was able to rock my my whole tire like a good few inches. Oh

[00:48:26] [SPEAKER_05]: That's not good. Yeah, and so, you know, I have all tools and everything I need to do it

[00:48:32] [SPEAKER_05]: The problem comes, you know being in New England things like to rust a lot

[00:48:36] [SPEAKER_05]: So I wasn't able to get the wheel bearing out of the knuckle

[00:48:39] [SPEAKER_05]: And it happened on a Sunday and this happened to be that there was a super dealership like two miles away. Oh, that's good

[00:48:45] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, so unfortunately were closed on the Sunday

[00:48:48] [SPEAKER_05]: But I just camped out in the parking lot that I was at for the night

[00:48:52] [SPEAKER_05]: I called them in the morning and then they actually ended up sending a driver to pick me up

[00:48:57] [SPEAKER_05]: With the knuckle and the wheel bearing so they could press it out for me

[00:49:00] [SPEAKER_05]: And so got that done got the new will bring back in

[00:49:03] [SPEAKER_05]: Ended up snapping my ABS sensor while doing that

[00:49:06] [SPEAKER_05]: So then I had to drive to Montana with no ABS sensor because there wasn't I had to pick up the sensor

[00:49:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Out there there weren't any close enough

[00:49:15] [SPEAKER_05]: but then after that no problems until Washington when the

[00:49:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Rear driver side will bring gave out on me

[00:49:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, so I had to look like I knew kind of exactly what I had to do so I found the super dealership

[00:49:30] [SPEAKER_05]: Set up in a Walmart parking lot right next to it and then got them to a press out the bearing for me

[00:49:36] [SPEAKER_05]: But then after that I didn't have any problems. So that's good

[00:49:40] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I replaced the the front wheel bearings before

[00:49:43] [SPEAKER_05]: The trip because I I was around 10,000 miles and they start to go around then

[00:49:47] [SPEAKER_05]: But I just let it get around to doing their beers. Okay. Well you've got them done now

[00:49:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so I should be good for a little bit. Yeah. Yeah, that's good. And then were you camping?

[00:49:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Every everywhere that you went or did you stay in any hotels at all? I

[00:50:04] [SPEAKER_05]: camped

[00:50:05] [SPEAKER_05]: every night of the trip except for I think the last night I got a hotel I just wanted to

[00:50:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Like take a nice shower and clean up a bit before I stopped back

[00:50:15] [SPEAKER_05]: I stopped in Jersey see my family and then also in in Yellowstone

[00:50:20] [SPEAKER_05]: My dad ended up flying out to Salt Lake City

[00:50:23] [SPEAKER_05]: City and then we drove up to Yellowstone together to spend I think about three or four days together

[00:50:29] [SPEAKER_03]: And so we stayed at a one of the cabins up there now. Did you encounter any bad weather the whole trip?

[00:50:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, yeah. Yeah driving through I mean driving through the Midwest in general. It was super windy

[00:50:43] [SPEAKER_05]: There's a point where

[00:50:44] [SPEAKER_05]: You know though the wind could be like behind me and I'd get like, you know, 30 miles per gallon

[00:50:49] [SPEAKER_05]: It was great, but then you know come come at me

[00:50:52] [SPEAKER_05]: I'd be getting like 10 miles per gallon and then driving through Montana. I had some some pretty bad storms

[00:50:58] [SPEAKER_05]: Going, you know West just just rain but it was real windy and rainy and then

[00:51:05] [SPEAKER_05]: Leaving Yellowstone I got caught in a in a blizzard

[00:51:08] [SPEAKER_05]: And so ended up actually getting like stuck on the highway for I think almost like two hours just completely

[00:51:16] [SPEAKER_05]: stopped I also end up flying finding a

[00:51:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Car that like spun around and was on the in a ditch on the side of the road

[00:51:24] [SPEAKER_05]: I try to help recover them

[00:51:25] [SPEAKER_05]: But then a state trooper showed up and was like it's probably safer for you

[00:51:28] [SPEAKER_05]: You keep going on and then yeah, I got stuck in the same ditch

[00:51:32] [SPEAKER_05]: I was able to get out. That's good. That's good. Yeah

[00:51:36] [SPEAKER_03]: So when you so you camping I guess inside the Forester

[00:51:41] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, so

[00:51:42] [SPEAKER_05]: Most nights I just stayed especially, you know through the Midwest and like more populated areas

[00:51:48] [SPEAKER_05]: I just stayed in like rest stops

[00:51:50] [SPEAKER_05]: And so I have a little sleeping setup in the in the trunk of my car like my drawer system extends out

[00:51:56] [SPEAKER_05]: I've like an extension piece and then just a nice little over six foot just flat platform

[00:52:01] [SPEAKER_05]: I put a mattress on that sleeping bag and everything and then I have

[00:52:05] [SPEAKER_05]: Covers for all the windows for for privacy nice

[00:52:08] [SPEAKER_05]: But then you know if I'm out in like public land like BLM land, I had my 10

[00:52:12] [SPEAKER_05]: I was able to okay on my 10. Yeah

[00:52:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then so as far as like food goes

[00:52:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Did you have a refrigerator in there that you were using or how would I wish I did?

[00:52:24] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that's one thing that I I wish I had I just had a cooler

[00:52:28] [SPEAKER_05]: But it was a pretty small cooler and it got warm

[00:52:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Fairly quickly. So I tried to not use as much like cold stuff

[00:52:37] [SPEAKER_05]: But yeah, you know making just like basic meals and then just also just stopping for food, you know

[00:52:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so what would you say I guess your biggest takeaway is from this whole trip

[00:52:50] [SPEAKER_05]: Probably how big the America really is

[00:52:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, and then how much the geography like varies it's it's really cool to drive through because you know, like through the Midwest

[00:53:00] [SPEAKER_05]: It's all flat and then towards western part of North Dakota into Montana

[00:53:04] [SPEAKER_05]: It gets you know pretty hilly and then all of a sudden they're just huge mountains

[00:53:07] [SPEAKER_05]: And it's it's just really cool to see the train evolve as you drive through

[00:53:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Was there a spot that you went through that was like just the most epic as far as like just views and where you were

[00:53:20] [SPEAKER_05]: It's hard to narrow it down. Just because like, you know, they're they're all

[00:53:25] [SPEAKER_05]: amazing, yeah views but

[00:53:29] [SPEAKER_05]: Surprisingly driving through like Idaho, I wouldn't think Idaho is like a very like, you know

[00:53:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Not a good-looking state but I was surprised by just how beautiful the views were and just the mountains and like, you know

[00:53:43] [SPEAKER_05]: It's part of the Pacific Northwest. So yeah the mountains and all the evergreen trees. It was just incredible

[00:53:49] [SPEAKER_05]: Yes, everything was still like covered in snow and stuff. Okay

[00:53:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Now so with your trip were you just planning to do it completely solo and just go do your own thing or did

[00:53:59] [SPEAKER_03]: You get a chance or plan to meet up with anybody on your trip?

[00:54:04] [SPEAKER_05]: I didn't make any plans to meet up with anyone

[00:54:06] [SPEAKER_05]: So it's kind of hoping just like wing it and meet up with them people

[00:54:09] [SPEAKER_05]: But unfortunately wasn't able to to make any plans work just cuz I was kind of going through a little quickly trying

[00:54:14] [SPEAKER_05]: To see as much as I could so yeah

[00:54:16] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean I figured you know if you're trying to

[00:54:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Go and do a trip like that

[00:54:21] [SPEAKER_03]: It would you know that you could do that one of two ways because then if you meet up with somebody then

[00:54:25] [SPEAKER_03]: You don't want to like hang out for a long time and call

[00:54:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then be like I'm kind of cutting into my time. They're not wanting

[00:54:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Get out through but so yeah, I get that but I mean it's you know

[00:54:35] [SPEAKER_03]: It's nice if you could but then also nice

[00:54:38] [SPEAKER_03]: You know if it's if it's your own personal trip that you're wanting to just go and yeah go do your own thing

[00:54:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Makes it a little bit easier

[00:54:46] [SPEAKER_05]: Especially for no delay. This is you know

[00:54:48] [SPEAKER_05]: I'll be able to make another trip out west to you know

[00:54:51] [SPEAKER_05]: Maybe like stay in the Pacific Northwest for like a week or so or something or Colorado that'd be pretty cool

[00:54:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so so now with that big trip and everything are there still like some bucket list spots that you would like to get out

[00:55:03] [SPEAKER_03]: To that you weren't able to get to oh, yeah

[00:55:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, there's definitely up in the Pacific Northwest. I want to explore a lot more also

[00:55:11] [SPEAKER_05]: You know Southern California, Utah. I want to also go up to

[00:55:16] [SPEAKER_05]: like the northeast

[00:55:18] [SPEAKER_05]: coast of

[00:55:19] [SPEAKER_05]: Canada

[00:55:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Explore there with the northern peninsula of Michigan

[00:55:23] [SPEAKER_03]: That's another place so yeah, there's you know, I mean there's there's so many beautiful spots within us and

[00:55:31] [SPEAKER_03]: It's you know

[00:55:32] [SPEAKER_03]: So when I had Jordan on he's over in France when I had him on he

[00:55:38] [SPEAKER_03]: He and his girlfriend were planning to take like a tour of Europe and they were gonna go around all these different countries

[00:55:44] [SPEAKER_03]: And be gone for like eight months

[00:55:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Wow, yeah, and

[00:55:48] [SPEAKER_03]: There was right when they were getting ready to go COVID hit and so everything got locked down all the borders got shut down

[00:55:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Everything and so they were kind of bummed because they're like, oh, what are we gonna do now?

[00:55:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Then they decided well

[00:56:01] [SPEAKER_03]: let's just go explore all the parts of France that we've never explored and that's what they ended up doing and

[00:56:06] [SPEAKER_03]: So, you know

[00:56:07] [SPEAKER_03]: I know there's a lot of beautiful places all over the world and not everybody has the opportunity to go to other places

[00:56:14] [SPEAKER_03]: But within the US there are like so many beautiful spots that oh, yeah, you can go explore

[00:56:21] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean because I like I went to Colorado for the first time as I think in my

[00:56:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe my late 20s or early 30s or something and I was just blown away by the mountains

[00:56:32] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that's still one of my favorite spots. It's just yeah. I want to take like a dedicated trip just for Colorado

[00:56:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, cool. Yeah, it is definitely nice out there

[00:56:43] [SPEAKER_03]: So I know this is a tough question

[00:56:45] [SPEAKER_03]: But name three people in the community that you've connected with

[00:56:50] [SPEAKER_03]: That you would like to meet up with in person and either hit some trails or just hang out with

[00:56:56] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, this is a rough tough question

[00:56:59] [SPEAKER_05]: Brittany the cross track is

[00:57:02] [SPEAKER_05]: His cross track is real cool. Yeah, so hopefully one day either

[00:57:06] [SPEAKER_05]: You know all go down to to a things like what Virginia or something?

[00:57:10] [SPEAKER_05]: There that'd be cool hit some trails down there

[00:57:15] [SPEAKER_05]: Maybe a

[00:57:16] [SPEAKER_05]: Satanic Subaru. Yeah, he's cool guy. Oh, yeah. Yeah, and I

[00:57:22] [SPEAKER_05]: It's such a cool little car, you know, it's yeah, it's a good build play. It has you know character

[00:57:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, he let me drive it whenever I went out there to moon rocks. So that was yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that was fun

[00:57:35] [SPEAKER_03]: fun little car and

[00:57:37] [SPEAKER_05]: then

[00:57:39] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay, do you know a world not so far away I've heard I think I follow but yeah

[00:57:46] [SPEAKER_05]: I think he's up in Canada. He has a third-gen forester. Mm-hmm

[00:57:51] [SPEAKER_05]: But yeah, here's a really cool build and just like amazing pictures and oh, yeah

[00:57:55] [SPEAKER_05]: To get out, you know, yeah, I know you're dealing with him

[00:57:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Yep. Yeah, there's I mean there's there's so many people out there too

[00:58:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's I know it's a hard question but and then like I don't want anybody to be like, oh he didn't mention me

[00:58:12] [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, I mean it's not to like single anybody out or leave anybody out or anything. It's just it's just an interesting question

[00:58:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but so now here's the other one if you could drive someone else's Subaru for a day, whose would it be?

[00:58:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay, I think I

[00:58:29] [SPEAKER_05]: They think kind of go together

[00:58:31] [SPEAKER_05]: but unpaved PNW or

[00:58:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Sherman the Forester. Yeah, just because like pushy Sherman the force

[00:58:38] [SPEAKER_05]: So that's a crazy lift on that thing, but they also get out there like real cool trails

[00:58:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and his stance is just like and yeah. Yeah, it looks like a truck. Yeah

[00:58:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then unpaved PNW. Yeah, he's got some good stuff too. Yeah, he's got a nice build

[00:58:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, he's like always finding trails. It seems I'm jealous

[00:58:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I know tell me about it

[00:59:02] [SPEAKER_03]: So

[00:59:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Like when you're getting out around town just like to you know, go to normal places

[00:59:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you get a lot of looks and people asking you about your build and making your hands or anything? Oh, yeah

[00:59:14] [SPEAKER_05]: for the most part there

[00:59:15] [SPEAKER_05]: You know actually in person the the comments are all positive

[00:59:20] [SPEAKER_05]: It's only like online when they're like native comments

[00:59:23] [SPEAKER_05]: But yeah people that I see my car whether it be like gas stations or like at a red light or something

[00:59:28] [SPEAKER_05]: They're always like wow, that thing is crazy. Like where do you go with that thing? So a lot of places

[00:59:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Let me tell you yeah, where do I not go?

[00:59:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Has anyone ever like asked you if it's something or you know said something other than a Subaru like oh, hey

[00:59:43] [SPEAKER_03]: That's a nice whatever because I've had some people on that like, you know, people thought it was something else than what it was

[00:59:49] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, there was once I got like a DM where someone was like nice Jeep

[00:59:54] Oh

[00:59:55] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah

[00:59:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Wow, I don't know. I don't know if they meant cheap as like a

[01:00:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Like a general term for like an off-road car or something or if they do and you thought it was cheap

[01:00:06] [SPEAKER_05]: But that was a little weird. Yeah, that is an interesting one

[01:00:11] [SPEAKER_03]: So you went to you talked about getting ready for boxer fist, but you did go to wicked big meat, correct?

[01:00:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and was that your first time going or had you been before? Yep. That was my first year

[01:00:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, so what was that like I

[01:00:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Mean it was it was amazing. It was super fun

[01:00:28] [SPEAKER_05]: It was a little warm, but it was really cool just to you know, hang out with everyone be the bunch of people

[01:00:34] [SPEAKER_05]: See all the cool, you know sub is there. Yeah

[01:00:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so it was great. What was the most memorable thing about it for you?

[01:00:42] [SPEAKER_05]: Well, we camped out the the night before that was pretty cool

[01:00:46] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, it's not specifically we could big meat

[01:00:48] [SPEAKER_05]: But yeah now, you know around the campfire just you know telling stories having fun

[01:00:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Like that's that's a lot of the fun and I'm excited to do that again for for boxer fest

[01:00:58] [SPEAKER_03]: And did you meet a lot of people that you've connected with through Instagram at wicked big meat?

[01:01:04] [SPEAKER_05]: I think there were a few that I you know saw an Instagram first. I don't think I can name any but

[01:01:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, they're there were a few

[01:01:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, and then so I guess like so I've been to boxer fest

[01:01:15] [SPEAKER_03]: I like the way boxer fest is laid out and it's

[01:01:19] [SPEAKER_03]: That was my first event and I was still like so new to Subaru when I went

[01:01:25] [SPEAKER_03]: man, like I was just kind of like kind of overwhelmed and

[01:01:30] [SPEAKER_03]: you know, I so SOA flew me out there because you know, I had just started the podcast and

[01:01:35] [SPEAKER_03]: They introduced me to Bucky which was really cool. Oh, yeah, and and so I got to meet a lot of people from Subaru

[01:01:42] [SPEAKER_03]: And

[01:01:43] [SPEAKER_03]: but it was like it was weird because I was in a way there by myself because they were all doing their own thing and

[01:01:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I was just walking around. I didn't really you know, I'm very shy in person

[01:01:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so I wasn't like going up to people and again like the podcast was still fairly new and I wasn't like hey

[01:02:02] [SPEAKER_03]: I do this podcast you should check it out, you know

[01:02:04] [SPEAKER_03]: but I did see some people there that I had connected with like

[01:02:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Back when he was still in the community and he had his build

[01:02:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Greg who goes by adventure dag wagon. He had his out back there

[01:02:17] [SPEAKER_03]: so I got to meet me and his wife which was really cool and

[01:02:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Few other people but that was uh, that was a lot of fun. So I think you'll yeah, you know

[01:02:25] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm looking forward to it. Yeah, so if you liked wicked big meat, you'll definitely like boxer fest

[01:02:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you know, it's nice that you're gonna be able to go to both of them this year

[01:02:33] [SPEAKER_05]: Mm-hmm. Yeah

[01:02:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I don't know why it didn't last I think I was kind of a little scared of going to such a big meet

[01:02:40] [SPEAKER_05]: But you know, there's a lot of fun going to wicked big me some I'm very excited for boxer fest

[01:02:45] [SPEAKER_03]: So how far is wicked big meat from you?

[01:02:49] [SPEAKER_05]: Just about an hour north. Okay. That's not bad at all. Yeah. No, no. Yeah

[01:02:54] [SPEAKER_03]: So getting back to your forest or what would you say about your forest or best matches your personality?

[01:03:01] [SPEAKER_05]: Probably that it's like versatile I can you know do a lot of things with it

[01:03:06] [SPEAKER_05]: I have a lot of you know tools and stuff and then

[01:03:09] [SPEAKER_05]: You know, I have a lot of skills

[01:03:12] [SPEAKER_05]: I like to you know kind of gather skills like, you know, like they're trading cards or something. So yeah

[01:03:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, and then if you could describe your

[01:03:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Forester in one word, what would it be?

[01:03:24] [SPEAKER_05]: prepared

[01:03:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it definitely looks prepared

[01:03:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, so how would you say that owning your Subaru has changed your life I

[01:03:35] [SPEAKER_05]: mean

[01:03:36] [SPEAKER_05]: I've just got so many like incredible people and like made so many memories. It's it's kind of crazy

[01:03:42] [SPEAKER_05]: Just how much you know can change just from getting a car, you know, oh, yeah

[01:03:47] [SPEAKER_05]: But yeah, just meeting a bunch of people making friends making memories. It's it's been so much fun

[01:03:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, then it's also giving the ability giving you let me try that again

[01:03:58] [SPEAKER_03]: It's also given you the ability to go

[01:04:01] [SPEAKER_03]: You know do more things and you know

[01:04:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Cuz like you said your other cards you had before you weren't able to do a whole lot with it

[01:04:09] [SPEAKER_03]: And yeah knowing that Subaru and the Forester was more off-road capable

[01:04:15] [SPEAKER_03]: You know

[01:04:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Even if you hadn't met a lot of people through the community and you just had the Forester and you were just kind

[01:04:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Of doing your own thing it still would have opened up a lot of you know

[01:04:25] [SPEAKER_03]: You know personal opportunities to go do things that you hadn't been doing before

[01:04:28] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah

[01:04:30] [SPEAKER_05]: Cuz I mean I like to explore and it just the car itself lets me do that and you know get places that I

[01:04:36] [SPEAKER_05]: never would have thought of

[01:04:38] [SPEAKER_03]: so yeah, and then having that kind of like you said you built the

[01:04:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Lego off-road RC cars, you know like having that kind of

[01:04:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Spark that interest in going off-road and then oh, yeah now being able to do it for real

[01:04:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Mm-hmm. That's pretty cool

[01:04:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you think you'll always own a Subaru? I think so. Yeah

[01:05:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Mmm, is there so is there anything that we that I didn't ask you or that we didn't talk about that

[01:05:06] [SPEAKER_03]: You would want to share about your Subaru journey or about your Forester

[01:05:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Not really. I don't think so. Okay. All right

[01:05:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, here is the segment where we get to know you a little bit more but who is Sean I'm a

[01:05:21] [SPEAKER_05]: 21 year old guy who likes to build stuff I think

[01:05:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think that sums me up. All right. Yeah, so besides your Subaru and then like the community

[01:05:33] [SPEAKER_03]: What else are you most passionate about? I?

[01:05:37] [SPEAKER_05]: Mean, you know building stuff and then work with my hands, you know

[01:05:40] [SPEAKER_05]: I've always been like tinkering with stuff ever since I've been you know, a little kid whether it be

[01:05:45] [SPEAKER_05]: I mean look at like a stuffer, you know just playing around taking pens apart in class and getting trouble

[01:05:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think yeah, I mean I think you know

[01:05:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Not everybody has that fascination, but I think a lot of people have that fascination of like, you know

[01:06:01] [SPEAKER_03]: What happens if I take this apart? What does it look like inside and then just seeing how things work?

[01:06:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then can I put it back together?

[01:06:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's definitely a good skill to have with the car. Oh, yeah

[01:06:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Especially because I mean I know that I wouldn't have been able to

[01:06:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Change out my rear wheel bearing, you know if I was out driving somewhere like I wouldn't even know what to do

[01:06:25] [SPEAKER_03]: so, you know, I know like basic stuff to do with a car but

[01:06:29] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, there's more complicated things that but I again like I'm not ever in situations where I'm having to do a lot

[01:06:36] [SPEAKER_05]: Of these things. Yeah, you don't really need to know how to do it, which is exactly good. Yeah

[01:06:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Now being that my car is a manual

[01:06:43] [SPEAKER_03]: At some point I'm gonna have to change the clutch and yeah

[01:06:47] [SPEAKER_03]: That is something that I do want to try to because there's there's some people I know here in Houston that work on their cars

[01:06:53] [SPEAKER_03]: They they don't have off-road builds, but I think they have the ability to do that type of work

[01:06:58] [SPEAKER_03]: And so I think I'm gonna reach out to them be like hey

[01:07:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Could y'all help me? You know, I'll buy all the parts and everything

[01:07:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Of course

[01:07:05] [SPEAKER_03]: But I think that would be fun to do that because I've heard from people that it's really not that difficult

[01:07:10] [SPEAKER_03]: You just have to have all the right parts to take it apart and everything. Yeah

[01:07:14] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I mean that's how like most things with work in a car is I mean, you know before this car I

[01:07:21] [SPEAKER_05]: Never worked in a car. I mean the first oil change ever did was on this car

[01:07:24] [SPEAKER_05]: And so nice, you know just kind of learning on the on the way and so, you know now I'm here

[01:07:30] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm able to swap out an axle on the trail or wheel bearing on the road, you know

[01:07:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and it's you know, there's also the satisfaction of being able to do those things yourself exactly and

[01:07:41] [SPEAKER_03]: especially when it comes to like maintenance things because it you see, you know, it's

[01:07:46] [SPEAKER_03]: You can do it yourself, but you also end up saving a ton of money in labor. Oh, yeah, which is very nice

[01:07:51] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like wait. It's gonna cost just as much for a labor as it does for the part. Come on

[01:07:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but I guess that's just the way the auto industry goes

[01:08:01] [SPEAKER_03]: So where were you born?

[01:08:04] [SPEAKER_03]: So I was born in central Jersey. Okay, and then is that where you're living now?

[01:08:10] [SPEAKER_03]: No, no, I live in Connecticut now. No, that's right. Yeah, you said that

[01:08:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay. So how long did you live in Jersey?

[01:08:16] [SPEAKER_05]: So I was born and raised in New Jersey and I moved out after high school. I moved up to Connecticut

[01:08:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, what is a favorite memory from your childhood?

[01:08:26] [SPEAKER_05]: Just all like the other trips my family would take and then you know camping a lot

[01:08:30] [SPEAKER_05]: Boy scout so oh no like camping like every month, you know, yeah

[01:08:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I I haven't been camping in so long

[01:08:38] [SPEAKER_03]: But when my son was in Cub Scouts, we went camping often and so that was a lot of fun

[01:08:42] [SPEAKER_03]: And I've been wanting to go ever since then because he didn't do it through junior high or high school

[01:08:48] [SPEAKER_03]: He just did it through elementary school. Yeah sure and

[01:08:52] [SPEAKER_03]: But like we've been on some family camping trips with my siblings, but that's about it

[01:08:57] [SPEAKER_03]: And and I have like all the camping gear still it's just it's just not something that we plan because we end up doing other things

[01:09:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I've wanted to and I keep saying that I want to go but just haven't done it yet

[01:09:09] [SPEAKER_03]: And then it just it gets so hot here for so many months throughout the year

[01:09:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you know, it's it's hard to pick a good month when it's not gonna be so hot. So

[01:09:19] [SPEAKER_03]: but

[01:09:20] [SPEAKER_03]: So what is that? You mentioned earlier what you do for a living? You said you do woodworking. So how long you've been doing that?

[01:09:27] [SPEAKER_05]: I

[01:09:27] [SPEAKER_05]: professionally about

[01:09:30] [SPEAKER_05]: Well, like two or three years

[01:09:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Okay, but then I've been

[01:09:33] [SPEAKER_05]: You know making stuff out of wood, you know since I can remember especially like in high school

[01:09:40] [SPEAKER_05]: That's where I really got you know a little more proficient with the stuff and what kind of things are you doing?

[01:09:47] [SPEAKER_05]: So I do a custom furniture so designing and building custom furniture. Nice. That's cool

[01:09:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you have a dream job?

[01:09:56] [SPEAKER_05]: This kind of already is my dream job to be honest

[01:09:58] [SPEAKER_05]: But if I had to pick something else, I think being like living on the road and being like a nature photographer

[01:10:04] [SPEAKER_05]: Would be really cool something like that or you know, I can always be exploring, you know

[01:10:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah

[01:10:10] [SPEAKER_05]: Doing photography. I like doing so yeah

[01:10:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Cuz it's definitely something that would you would be doing something you already are doing and something that you really enjoy

[01:10:20] [SPEAKER_03]: So exactly. Yeah

[01:10:22] [SPEAKER_03]: So besides getting out and driving your Subaru, what other hobbies do you have? You know, I do a lot of Lego

[01:10:30] [SPEAKER_05]: playing games

[01:10:31] [SPEAKER_05]: You know woodworking and just you know tinkering or stuff. Yeah, that's always fun

[01:10:37] [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah Lego sets are always fun

[01:10:39] [SPEAKER_03]: And I because I mean I grew up doing Lego sets when I was a kid

[01:10:42] [SPEAKER_03]: but back when I was a kid if we didn't have the theme to Lego sets it was just like a

[01:10:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Lego set that was like a spaceship or a truck or

[01:10:51] [SPEAKER_03]: You know something I don't even know when they started doing the themed ones

[01:10:56] [SPEAKER_03]: But like I think that's when they started getting a lot more expensive too

[01:10:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but they're definitely worth it. I think I mean, it's you know, there are a lot of fun

[01:11:04] [SPEAKER_03]: There are ones that are you know, not crazy big but and not too crazy expensive

[01:11:10] [SPEAKER_03]: But they're still a lot of fun to put together. Oh, yeah. Yeah

[01:11:14] [SPEAKER_03]: So what is something that makes you want to get out of bed every day?

[01:11:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Just driving my car

[01:11:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah

[01:11:23] [SPEAKER_03]: That's a good one. What is what is something that makes you want to stay in bed? I

[01:11:28] [SPEAKER_05]: like to sleep

[01:11:31] [SPEAKER_05]: Sleep is good. Yeah. Yeah, I mean everything

[01:11:35] [SPEAKER_05]: Everything else, you know, I like being in bed, you know being on my phone. Yes. Yeah as nice

[01:11:43] [SPEAKER_03]: What would be your best bit of advice to give to someone about anything?

[01:11:48] [SPEAKER_05]: Just like try things

[01:11:50] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, cuz you know, like I said the the first oil change I ever did on on a car was my car and you know

[01:11:57] [SPEAKER_05]: I was like, you know, I'm gonna try it, you know worst-case scenario

[01:12:00] [SPEAKER_05]: I have to go to a shop, you know

[01:12:02] [SPEAKER_05]: But I tried it and you know here I am with

[01:12:05] [SPEAKER_05]: You know being able to do all the maintenance and repairs and everything in my car and you know

[01:12:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you have to try for the first time, you know people that you know again

[01:12:16] [SPEAKER_03]: It your circumstances and the things that you do with your car kind of necessitate

[01:12:21] [SPEAKER_03]: your abilities of what you can do with and for your car and

[01:12:26] [SPEAKER_03]: so I think that's like super cool that there are so many people out there that

[01:12:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Get out and just kind of beat these cars up and really enjoy them

[01:12:36] [SPEAKER_03]: But then can also fix them at the same time

[01:12:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah

[01:12:39] [SPEAKER_03]: You know

[01:12:39] [SPEAKER_03]: it's not like you go out it gets beat up and they're like oh now my car is down for two months because

[01:12:44] [SPEAKER_03]: I gotta wait and get the parts and fix it. It's yeah, it's pretty amazing

[01:12:48] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, definitely would not drive my car as hard as I do if I didn't know how to fix most stuff

[01:12:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah

[01:12:55] [SPEAKER_03]: and that's what and that's exactly why I am careful about when I go out and yeah, I not to do anything too crazy because

[01:13:02] [SPEAKER_03]: If I do something super crazy and I really damage something then my car is definitely gonna be out

[01:13:09] [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm gonna have to like find somebody to help me fix it or take it to a shop and spend a ton of money

[01:13:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah

[01:13:16] [SPEAKER_03]: so

[01:13:17] [SPEAKER_03]: But uh, I do love driving it just even on gravel roads or when we can have all roads are plenty fun

[01:13:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, just I mean for me just getting off the pavement is fun

[01:13:29] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, and so it's just it's nice having something that I know that I can take off-road and not have to stick to

[01:13:37] [SPEAKER_03]: the pavement

[01:13:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Exactly, but well, thank you for taking the time to record. Yeah, of course. Thanks for having me. You had a lot of fun

[01:13:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah

[01:13:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Well good and it was fun hearing your story and hearing about all the stuff that you've done with it

[01:13:51] [SPEAKER_03]: And especially your cross-country trip and hope that you get a chance to do that and explore some more places

[01:13:56] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, yeah

[01:13:57] [SPEAKER_05]: Hopefully I'll have some some more fun trips planned for like, you know next year in the following years

[01:14:02] [SPEAKER_05]: So yeah, stay tuned

[01:14:04] [SPEAKER_03]: All right, and then you know have a good time at boxer fest it's coming up pretty good and yeah

[01:14:10] [SPEAKER_03]: It's coming up real fast. Yeah, so I know you'll enjoy are you are you trying to put it in the show or just drive?

[01:14:16] [SPEAKER_05]: Up there. No, I'm not gonna be in the show. Okay

[01:14:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you think that's something that you might try to do next year at least maybe for wicked big meat since it's closer

[01:14:25] [SPEAKER_05]: I I think I might do it for wicked big me. I was talking to a

[01:14:29] [SPEAKER_05]: South Coast cross track Nick. Okay about doing it and so it'd be cool

[01:14:33] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm probably gonna you know at the show or a boxer fest this year be like and I should have entered but

[01:14:39] [SPEAKER_05]: You know a little too late now. So yeah, that's all right

[01:14:42] [SPEAKER_03]: It's nice though because then at least you know

[01:14:44] [SPEAKER_03]: If you if you're not in the show you're not having to like be around your car the whole time and yeah

[01:14:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Show it off then you can have the freedom to go around and really enjoy it

[01:14:56] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, especially cuz it's my first year. I kind of want to see the rest of the

[01:14:59] [SPEAKER_03]: The whole show yeah, cuz like when I went out to

[01:15:04] [SPEAKER_03]: SubiFest, California

[01:15:05] [SPEAKER_03]: SOA flew me out to that one too and they set me up with a podcast booth and that was great

[01:15:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Like it was such a great experience

[01:15:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I was extremely thankful to be able to be out there and have a booth to record with people

[01:15:18] [SPEAKER_03]: But at the same time like I wasn't really able to enjoy the show

[01:15:21] [SPEAKER_05]: Like I would try to really go out and like look around and everything

[01:15:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so I would try to leave and then people would be coming in and so but you know

[01:15:31] [SPEAKER_03]: I got there early enough though that I was able to walk around and meet a lot of people and hang out for a

[01:15:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Little bit before I started recording and then like last year at SubiFest, Texas

[01:15:41] [SPEAKER_03]: they had me there with a booth to talk to the local retailers and

[01:15:47] [SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, I talked to four different people from four different dealerships, but we had time scheduled for it

[01:15:53] [SPEAKER_03]: And so that was the only time that I was at my booth was to talk to those people

[01:15:58] [SPEAKER_03]: and the rest of the time I was able to go out and enjoy the event and

[01:16:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Then and then this year it's gonna be different because I actually have my Rode Wireless Pro

[01:16:08] [SPEAKER_03]: So I have you know, I'll be completely mobile

[01:16:12] [SPEAKER_03]: and so I'm trying to decide if I want to bring my full setup or just bring that because I

[01:16:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Mean I bring my Rode Wireless Pro and it's like small and yeah

[01:16:24] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't have to bring like my mixing board and my laptop and all this stuff

[01:16:28] [SPEAKER_03]: I can bring that and just bring a backpack and be good just set up much easier. Oh, yeah

[01:16:35] [SPEAKER_03]: So but yeah, they're good events. They're fun. I'm glad you're getting to go to two of them this year

[01:16:41] [SPEAKER_03]: It's nice that you have that ability to do that. Oh, yeah

[01:16:46] [SPEAKER_03]: So but yeah, thanks again and hope you have a good night you're welcome

[01:16:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Keep in touch. Sounds good. Take care. You too. Bye. Bye
