Derek joins us on the podcast to talk about his adventures in the Pacific Northwest in his Subaru Forester. He also shares some stories about getting stuck and some sketchy situations he found himself in.

[00:00:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Hey everyone, this is Derek. You can find me on Instagram at unpavedpnw and you're listening to episode 187 of the Subie & You podcast.
[00:00:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Hello everybody, welcome back to another episode of the Subie & You podcast. As you just heard, I have Derek on the podcast to talk about his Forester and his Subaru journey.
[00:00:32] [SPEAKER_01]: And it was interesting to find out that the Forester is not the only Subaru he has owned, but this is the one that we're talking about.
[00:00:42] [SPEAKER_01]: So it's a good episode and he lives in the Pacific Northwest, which is a perfect spot, as many people know, to own a Subaru.
[00:00:52] [SPEAKER_01]: So he talks about places that he likes to explore up there and some of the people that he's gotten together with.
[00:00:58] [SPEAKER_01]: So, but we will hear more about that here in a little bit.
[00:01:03] [SPEAKER_00]: The Subie & You podcast is brought to you by Eccentric Designs.
[00:01:07] [SPEAKER_00]: For those of you who don't know, Eccentric Designs is a small community driven business that offers custom fit vinyl overlays for most Subaru models.
[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_00]: This includes various designs for the rear reflectors, taillights and side taillights.
[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_00]: I also offer fun decal designs like the popular fender stripes and stickers.
[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_00]: To find designs for your Subie, head on over to eccentricdesigns.com.
[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_00]: There's always more projects in the works, so be sure to follow at eccentric.designs on Instagram.
[00:01:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Of course, as always, thank you so much, Eccentric Designs, for sponsoring the Subie & You podcast.
[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I really, really appreciate that.
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_01]: If you haven't done so, go check out her website, check out her Instagram page and see what sort of decals she has to offer for your Subaru.
[00:01:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so if you happen to see my stories from Saturday on Pearl's page, you saw that I posted a photo of a Tesla steering wheel.
[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Of course, that is not my car.
[00:02:05] [SPEAKER_01]: I did not trade Pearl in for a Tesla.
[00:02:08] [SPEAKER_01]: That's my brother's car.
[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_01]: I took him to go pick it up.
[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_01]: But that car is pretty awesome, I have to admit.
[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I listened to Elon Musk's audio book.
[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_01]: And after listening to that, all of the innovation and all of the technology and the programming, just everything that went into creating the Tesla is pretty amazing.
[00:02:34] [SPEAKER_01]: And that car is very, very fast.
[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_01]: And he got the low end.
[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_01]: So like the base model of a Tesla.
[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_01]: And that car is still extremely fast.
[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_01]: But I mean, it's really nice inside.
[00:02:48] [SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of technology that's built into it.
[00:02:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I know a lot of people are not fans of EVs.
[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I know a lot of people are not fans of Tesla.
[00:02:56] [SPEAKER_01]: But I really like the car.
[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's pretty innovative.
[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_01]: And it was a lot of fun.
[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_01]: So when we went and picked it up, we went for a drive.
[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_01]: And of course, we were having fun with it.
[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_01]: And then later on at his house, me and his wife went to go drive it and took turns driving it.
[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_01]: And I have to say, it was a lot of fun.
[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_01]: But of course, no, I did not trade Pearl in.
[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_01]: It would be nice.
[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_01]: I've mentioned this before.
[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I know other people have too.
[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_01]: It would be really nice to have a car that is capable off-road and then have a fun on-road car.
[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_01]: So maybe someday that can happen.
[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Of course, I would prefer it to be a Subaru, a fast Subaru.
[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Especially, you know, I mean, the BRZ would be a lot of fun.
[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_01]: But I think I would rather have an all-wheel drive Subaru to have fun on the road.
[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_01]: But maybe someday.
[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_01]: The Subi and You podcast is also brought to you by SubaruGear.com.
[00:03:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Last weekend, I posted a reel with some of the new items that are available at SubaruGear.com.
[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_01]: And I posted cold weather items because I know in some places it's probably starting to get a little bit cooler.
[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_01]: And in other places, if it's not yet, it probably will soon.
[00:04:11] [SPEAKER_01]: So go check out SubaruGear.com.
[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_01]: And right there on the homepage, they have shop new items.
[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_01]: So you can go check out all that they have to offer.
[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_01]: And then of course, in the reel that I posted, that's just some of the items that you can find at SubaruGear.com.
[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_01]: So go check it out.
[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_01]: When you put all the items in your cart and you're ready to purchase, use the code SUBIANDU24 for 20% off your purchase.
[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_01]: And if your purchase is, or if the total is over $50 after the 20% discount, you will automatically get free shipping, which is really good incentive.
[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_01]: So thank you so much SubaruGear.com for sponsoring the SUBIANDU podcast.
[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_01]: And thank you so much for extending this offer to our listeners.
[00:04:57] [SPEAKER_01]: I know that SUBIFest Florida was held over the weekend on Saturday, October 5th.
[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_01]: And with all of the weather concerns, I'm glad that they were still able to hold it.
[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's good for everybody that, you know, you had a chance to go out there and check out SUBIFest Florida.
[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_01]: So in a couple of weeks, we're going to have SUBIFest Texas, which of course I'm very excited about because it's in my home state and is close enough for me to drive.
[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'll be up there. That's going to be Saturday, October 19th.
[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_01]: So if you were able to make it out to SUBIFest Texas, it'd be awesome to see anybody that can make it out to this great event in this great state.
[00:05:33] [SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know what's going on, but yesterday on my way to my brother's house, Pearl started making a rattling noise and it sounds like it's in the engine compartment.
[00:05:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know exactly what it is.
[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_01]: I wish I knew more about everything or all the components of these cars.
[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_01]: So I don't I don't know if it's maybe suspension related or engine related.
[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_01]: But when I started it up, there was a pretty loud clanking noise and then it just did it that one time right when I started it.
[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_01]: And then I was so I always listen to my music kind of loud.
[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm driving and I could feel a vibration in my gas pedal.
[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, like when you're driving on a road that has a very rough surface, you can just kind of feel it.
[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_01]: It feels like the tires are just, you know, bumping along the road.
[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_01]: You could feel it in the pedal.
[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_01]: That's kind of the way it felt.
[00:06:29] [SPEAKER_01]: And so I turned the music down and I think I was at a stop sign whenever I turned it down and I started driving.
[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_01]: And then there was this rattling, almost kind of grinding sound, but not grinding like metal or gears or something.
[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_01]: So it's kind of hard to explain.
[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm going to have to take Pearl into a local shop here and they used to are out where I live because I don't feel comfortable driving it far there.
[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_01]: There's two shops here in Houston that I would really trust to take Pearl to.
[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_01]: They're ex-Subaru technicians that started their own shops, but they're both over 30 minutes away.
[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_01]: And I don't really want to drive Pearl that far.
[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that would be my preference.
[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_01]: But I'm going to take her to this shop that I used to take my other car to before.
[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like they're very trustworthy.
[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_01]: They're very honest.
[00:07:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Their pricing is really good because I compared their pricing with several other shops.
[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Just kind of putting in, you know, like what they...
[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Because like with my other car, there were some things that were wrong that I knew it was wrong.
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_01]: It was just kind of like simple things to get fixed.
[00:07:34] [SPEAKER_01]: But as far as like pricing out that stuff, they seem to be very reasonable.
[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_01]: And so, and I've trusted them with my previous car.
[00:07:41] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's where I'm going to take Pearl so that I can get her looked at.
[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Because I have an event this weekend coming up.
[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to Huffine's Subaru in Corinth, which is near Denton.
[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_01]: And I've been invited to that event and I want to be able to make it.
[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_01]: So hopefully I can get her fixed and get her going and be able to make it to the event.
[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Because I don't want to miss it.
[00:08:06] [SPEAKER_01]: And then, of course, we've got SubieFest Texas the following weekend.
[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_01]: And I definitely don't want to miss that.
[00:08:11] [SPEAKER_01]: But anyway, I'll let you know.
[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_01]: I'll catch you all up on the SubieScoop next Monday.
[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_01]: But for now, we'll get into this episode with Derek.
[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_01]: So here we go.
[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the podcast, Derek.
[00:08:33] [SPEAKER_01]: It's nice to have you.
[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Thanks for having me.
[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_01]: You're welcome.
[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_01]: So where did Unpaved P&W come from?
[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's kind of obvious.
[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_01]: You obviously live in the P&W and you're getting out on unpaved roads.
[00:08:47] [SPEAKER_01]: But how did you come up with the name for that?
[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_04]: That's pretty much it right there.
[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:08:53] [SPEAKER_04]: There's a little bit more to it.
[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_04]: When we first started getting off-roading, we kind of go to Central Oregon quite a bit.
[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_04]: And there's a little town out there that we go to almost every time.
[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_04]: And pretty much any direction you head away from that town, you're going to find some kind of unpaved road.
[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_04]: And there's just something about that feeling when you transition from the pavement to dirt or gravel that really stood out with the family.
[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_04]: And when I first started thinking about starting some type of account, I happened to put that one in and was kind of shocked that it was available.
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:09:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:09:29] [SPEAKER_01]: It's a good account name.
[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_04]: It's kind of taken off from there.
[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it definitely has.
[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_01]: So do you have an actual name for your Forester?
[00:09:40] [SPEAKER_04]: I do not.
[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_04]: I just call it the Forester.
[00:09:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_04]: My family will often refer to it as unpaved, like if we're going out and we're trying to decide what car we're taking.
[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Like my wife will say, are we taking unpaved?
[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Are the kids will say, are we taking unpaved?
[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_04]: And yeah, we're taking the Forester.
[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Because your wife has an ascent, correct?
[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Correct.
[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_01]: All right.
[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, before we get any further about your Subarus and stuff, I have to ask the all important question.
[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's whether you prefer waffles or pancakes.
[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I'm definitely more of a pancake guy.
[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_04]: Good.
[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Good.
[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Me too.
[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't eat them a whole lot, either one of them very much anymore.
[00:10:19] [SPEAKER_04]: But there was like a three-month period when my kids were younger that I was just trying to perfect like a gluten-free pancake mix.
[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, nice.
[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_04]: And finally figured one out.
[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_04]: And it got to the point where like our kids were having like sleepovers just so their friends could come over and eat pancakes in the morning.
[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Nice.
[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Got to be some good pancakes in.
[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:10:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Almost tastes like a chocolate chip cookie.
[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's good.
[00:10:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's fun whenever you find something that you can kind of play around with and perfect and then that people end up enjoying.
[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, it's nice to bring joy to people through food, definitely.
[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Absolutely.
[00:10:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's good.
[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_01]: So you've got the Forester and then you have the Ascent.
[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_01]: So what year and like trim level is your Forester?
[00:11:06] [SPEAKER_04]: The Forester is a 21.
[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a sport model.
[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_04]: And our Impreza, our Estimulant Impreza Ascent is a 2020, I think.
[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_04]: And it's a limited edition.
[00:11:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:11:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Are you wishing you had an Impreza?
[00:11:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Is that why that slipped in there?
[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_04]: No, I've actually had an Impreza and it was like one of my least favorite Subaru I've owned.
[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay.
[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Interesting.
[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:11:31] [SPEAKER_01]: So how many have you owned?
[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Is it just the Impreza and these or have you had others as well?
[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Nah, I was like going back and counting.
[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_04]: I think all together we've had eight or nine.
[00:11:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:11:42] [SPEAKER_01]: So you've been with Subaru for a while.
[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Our first one, I think it was a 2000 Forester.
[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_04]: And the one I have now is our third one.
[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_04]: I can't remember that year or the other one.
[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like a 14 or 17.
[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_04]: We've had a couple of Legacies, one Impreza, Cross Trek, and Outback.
[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Nice.
[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
[00:12:02] [SPEAKER_01]: So where did your interest come from for Subaru in the first place?
[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, I was kind of thinking back.
[00:12:12] [SPEAKER_04]: There's definitely some people in our lives that have had really nice Subarus.
[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_04]: My in-laws, they had like one of those beautiful blue WRX wagons for a while.
[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah.
[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_04]: They had a really nice legacy as well.
[00:12:25] [SPEAKER_04]: I had some friends when just growing up in high school and college, I had some Subarus.
[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_04]: But I think my first interest was like when the Outback was first announced in the States.
[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_04]: And like they were using Paul Hogan.
[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know if any of these commercials, like a super old commercials from like, I don't know,
[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_04]: like 90s, I think.
[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, I actually found some of those videos the other night.
[00:12:46] [SPEAKER_04]: I was just cracking up.
[00:12:46] [SPEAKER_04]: And I'm like, that's really, I remember thinking like, that'll be so fun to drive.
[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_04]: Like he's making this thing look amazing.
[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_04]: And I finally got to drive one for the first time with a friend in college.
[00:12:56] [SPEAKER_04]: And I just love the way it handled.
[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, didn't pursue getting one until later in life.
[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_04]: But now we've had a bunch of them.
[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I remember those commercials.
[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_01]: And now I'm going to have to go back.
[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_01]: I've been meaning to go back and watch those because like every once in a while, somebody
[00:13:12] [SPEAKER_01]: will bring that up.
[00:13:14] [SPEAKER_01]: And I keep forgetting to go watch it.
[00:13:16] [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I definitely remember those.
[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm an old guy, man.
[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_01]: I remember some of this old stuff.
[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm not far behind me.
[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't think.
[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_04]: I remember those vividly.
[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_04]: And they still hold up.
[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_01]: They're good commercials.
[00:13:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, they're good cars.
[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I've got the 21 Crosstrek.
[00:13:35] [SPEAKER_01]: My daughter has a 24 Crosstrek.
[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_01]: And then my son has a 2010 Outback 3.6R.
[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_01]: So we've all got Subarus now, which is nice.
[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's not so much like, oh, hey, I want them to have a Subaru so they can be in the community.
[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I want them to have a Subaru because I know they're good cars.
[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_01]: I know that they're going to last.
[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Being in Houston with a lot of the rain that we get, I'd feel much safer with them driving
[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_01]: an all-wheel drive car.
[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_01]: So, and just, you know, I've had people on that have been in accidents and then you see
[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_01]: people in accidents on Instagram, you know, unfortunately.
[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_01]: But the fortunate thing is, is so many people have said, I don't think I would have survived
[00:14:14] [SPEAKER_01]: this if I wasn't in a Subaru.
[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Subaru.
[00:14:16] [SPEAKER_01]: And so for my kids to be in a Subaru, that makes me feel a lot better with them driving
[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_01]: one.
[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely.
[00:14:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:14:23] [SPEAKER_01]: So how old are your kids?
[00:14:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Because you have two kids, right?
[00:14:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, we have a 15 year old and a 12 year old.
[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_04]: So high school and middle school.
[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Will they be getting Subarus when they're getting their first cars?
[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_04]: We'll see.
[00:14:38] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm sure my son will probably end up, I mean, he's already driven a couple of times.
[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_04]: I've taken him out just now that he has his permit.
[00:14:43] [SPEAKER_04]: We've been going out on forest roads and let him drive that.
[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, at some point I'm sure he'll be taking the Forester out on his own.
[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, we'll see.
[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_04]: I'd love for them to have a Subaru someday, but I'll leave that up to them.
[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:14:58] [SPEAKER_04]: That's what they want to go do.
[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_01]: So like with your Forester that you have now, you've got some pretty nice mods on it.
[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Is this the first Subaru that you've modded or did you mod other ones as well?
[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_04]: This is the, yeah, the first Subaru and the first car I think I've ever modded.
[00:15:16] [SPEAKER_01]: So being that you had other Subarus before, and this is the first one that you've modded,
[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_01]: where did that interest come from?
[00:15:23] [SPEAKER_04]: We had just started getting into off-roading.
[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_04]: We actually had a 4Runner at the time.
[00:15:29] [SPEAKER_04]: So I was driving our Crosscheck.
[00:15:31] [SPEAKER_04]: My wife had the 4Runner.
[00:15:33] [SPEAKER_04]: That's what we were kind of using to go off-roading.
[00:15:35] [SPEAKER_04]: And that thing was just ridiculously expensive for payments and gas was crazy.
[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_04]: So we started thinking through, you know, like what could we do that we could still have
[00:15:44] [SPEAKER_04]: like a comfortable car we could take for road trips and be able to take it off-roading.
[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_04]: So I started looking at, I was looking at Foresters.
[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_04]: I think I was looking at the Outbacks at the time too.
[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_04]: And it was right at the time, like 2020, 2021, where like you just could not find a new car.
[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_04]: So I ended up finding a barely used Forester.
[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_04]: It was a 21.
[00:16:06] [SPEAKER_04]: I think it had like 3,000 miles on, but it still looked brand new.
[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Nice.
[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Quickly did some searching around, you know, what could I do for off-roading it?
[00:16:13] [SPEAKER_04]: And saw that people were able to do little lip kits and things like that.
[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_04]: And then it just went down the rabbit hole and started seeing all these other things I could do to it.
[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_01]: So what was the first mod that you did?
[00:16:27] [SPEAKER_04]: I think within the first day or two, I just completely blacked it out.
[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Like all the paint on the outside.
[00:16:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah, yeah.
[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_04]: The sport models have that orange kind of pinstriping on the bottom and around.
[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_04]: So I just got rid of all that.
[00:16:40] [SPEAKER_04]: I thought it looked a lot better just with all the black.
[00:16:42] [SPEAKER_01]: So what did you use to black it out?
[00:16:45] [SPEAKER_04]: I just sanded it.
[00:16:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Sharpie?
[00:16:47] [SPEAKER_01]: No.
[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_04]: I have seen people do that.
[00:16:50] [SPEAKER_04]: No, I just kind of sanded it down and then just used some spray paint to get rid of it.
[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_04]: It was all like just plastic.
[00:16:55] [SPEAKER_04]: So it was pretty easy to get rid of.
[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_01]: That's good.
[00:16:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's a quick fix and a very inexpensive fix to, you know, give it a look that you would prefer.
[00:17:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Making them our own, which is part of the fun.
[00:17:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I think that's the first time I've ever done that to a car.
[00:17:14] [SPEAKER_04]: But I knew I just, I didn't like that orange stripe on it.
[00:17:17] [SPEAKER_04]: So I'm going to get rid of it.
[00:17:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Did it scare you a little bit to be like, oh man, I'm like, you know, buffing out this plastic here so that I could put some spray paint on it?
[00:17:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Or were you like really excited about it?
[00:17:28] [SPEAKER_04]: A little bit of both.
[00:17:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Like I said, I'd never done something like that before.
[00:17:32] [SPEAKER_04]: So it was pretty straightforward on how to do it.
[00:17:36] [SPEAKER_04]: But, you know, you're still kind of running the risk of scratching things that you don't want to.
[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_04]: But I didn't really get nervous about anything until I decided I was going to cut the front bumper at one point.
[00:17:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:17:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:17:49] [SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of that going around too.
[00:17:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_01]: So that and hood scoops.
[00:17:54] [SPEAKER_01]: So our hood louvers.
[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_01]: That gets interesting.
[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Interesting.
[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_01]: So what was you, what would you say it was your first like big mod, like something that you added to the car?
[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_04]: I think really closely together.
[00:18:07] [SPEAKER_04]: I was kind of going back and looking at pictures, but I put a hitch on it.
[00:18:10] [SPEAKER_04]: And then I think in that same weekend, I also put on a two inch lift kit just with the spacers.
[00:18:17] [SPEAKER_04]: And then I think that same week I ended up getting new tires for it.
[00:18:20] [SPEAKER_04]: And that's, that was really what we were going for to kind of start getting off-roading a little bit more.
[00:18:25] [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, I just went with, I went with a cheap lift kit to start and really didn't know anything about it.
[00:18:30] [SPEAKER_04]: I was just kind of checking like forums and things that this was before I had my Instagram account was reaching out to people, but.
[00:18:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:18:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Just kind of went with what people said we had worked for them and then ended up getting some of the Falcon Wild Peak trail tires that week as well.
[00:18:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:18:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:18:48] [SPEAKER_01]: I've been running Toyos on my car.
[00:18:50] [SPEAKER_01]: This is my second set.
[00:18:52] [SPEAKER_01]: And because I, whenever, I don't think I'd heard much about Falcon Wild Peak whenever I bought mine, but I'd heard some, some more about Toyos.
[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_01]: And I knew some people that had Falcons, but like I've heard so many good things about Falcon Wild Peaks that people really like them.
[00:19:07] [SPEAKER_01]: So were you taking it off-road before you did any mods, you know, just to like see what it was capable of as a stock Forester?
[00:19:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Or did you wait until you did some stuff to it before you took it off-road?
[00:19:20] [SPEAKER_04]: We waited and I don't really know why.
[00:19:23] [SPEAKER_04]: I just, I needed to have all these other things before I started going out and off-roading, but you really don't.
[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_04]: A stock car, stock Forester, stock, any Subaru really.
[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, the majority of places I go, I will almost always see like a Prius or a Tesla, like on these forest roads too, like in some of these spots.
[00:19:39] [SPEAKER_04]: But they're usually totally trash, but it's still pretty funny that we always kind of see those things.
[00:19:44] [SPEAKER_04]: But no, a stock, a stock Forester or a stock CrossRex or whatever, it's going to get you to, I would say at least 90, 95% of the places I go to.
[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's good.
[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, it's nice that just having these cars as a stock vehicle, that they're so much more capable than people realize.
[00:20:04] [SPEAKER_01]: And you can get out to a lot of spots that you think you probably couldn't.
[00:20:08] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's not until you either see somebody else do it or you go with a group of people that know what they're doing and can help you out.
[00:20:15] [SPEAKER_01]: And then you're like, oh, wow, this car is way more capable than I thought.
[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_01]: And then that's kind of where the fun starts, you know.
[00:20:22] [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, okay, well, I know it can do this like it is now, but what could I do if I did this, this, and this?
[00:20:28] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, what more, where could I, what more, let me see.
[00:20:33] [SPEAKER_01]: How many more places could I go to and what else could I, you know, explore if I put some different tires?
[00:20:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Because, I mean, tires would make a big difference.
[00:20:43] [SPEAKER_01]: And then also, you know, a lift kit depending on where you're going.
[00:20:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, absolutely.
[00:20:48] [SPEAKER_04]: I had no idea how much different tires would make a difference, but you are correct.
[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_04]: They do make a big difference.
[00:20:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:20:56] [SPEAKER_01]: So where, once you got the lift kit on and you got the tires and you're ready to go out, like, where were some of the first places that you started to explore?
[00:21:05] [SPEAKER_04]: We started going to some different places up on Mount Hood, which is, I mean, that's closest mountain to us.
[00:21:11] [SPEAKER_04]: And there's a lot of great trails that are up there.
[00:21:14] [SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, I think some of those roads up there are mostly were just fine for, like, the stocks.
[00:21:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Forester didn't need to have the wheels and tires, but it just made me feel like I got this.
[00:21:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, I can do all these different things.
[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_04]: I started pushing myself a little bit to try different trails, and then you end up, like, going on these really narrow trails that are scratching up your paint and all this other stuff.
[00:21:37] [SPEAKER_04]: And here I was with this almost brand new car with no paint scratches, and then a couple months later, it's just scarred for life.
[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but, you know, it's like, that kind of stuff is worth what you get to go do and what you get to go see.
[00:21:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Because, like, with my car, I've done some stuff to it myself, and, you know, I'm not happy about it, but I'm also not sad.
[00:22:01] [SPEAKER_01]: But then, like, if somebody were to park next to me really close and ding my door pretty bad, I'd be, like, really mad about that, you know?
[00:22:08] [SPEAKER_01]: But you could do some stuff to it on the trail, mess some stuff up, and you're like, eh, oh well.
[00:22:13] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, it was fun.
[00:22:15] [SPEAKER_01]: So.
[00:22:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
[00:22:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, I'm almost certain I have a couple door dings that I'm more annoyed with because I know I didn't cause them.
[00:22:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
[00:22:24] [SPEAKER_01]: I have one door ding that somebody I parked, because I always try to park, like, in an end spot and park, like, as close to the curb without, you know, rubbing my tires as I can so that I can be, give some space between me and the next car over.
[00:22:39] [SPEAKER_01]: And I did that going to lunch one day when I was out of town in San Antonio for my old job.
[00:22:45] [SPEAKER_01]: And I went back out to my car, and as I'm walking up, I see this car really close that they were parked.
[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I was backed in.
[00:22:52] [SPEAKER_01]: They were head in, so I knew that the driver side was next to my car.
[00:22:56] [SPEAKER_01]: And as I got closer, I saw how close they were, and I was like, no, no, please no.
[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_01]: And sure enough, there's a big ding.
[00:23:02] [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, argh.
[00:23:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Did you wait for them to come out?
[00:23:06] [SPEAKER_01]: No.
[00:23:07] [SPEAKER_01]: No, I had to go.
[00:23:08] [SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, I just, you know, I stuck a knife in their tires and no.
[00:23:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so you said that you started going up to Mount Hood.
[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_01]: You said that's the closest place to you.
[00:23:21] [SPEAKER_01]: When you say closest, like, how far of a drive is that from where you are as far as time-wise?
[00:23:28] [SPEAKER_04]: We can get up there.
[00:23:29] [SPEAKER_04]: It's about 45 to 50 minutes before we're kind of at the base of the mountain.
[00:23:34] [SPEAKER_01]: That sounds horrible.
[00:23:35] [SPEAKER_04]: I know, right?
[00:23:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
[00:23:37] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm just getting started, too, about all the places that are close to us, Raph.
[00:23:41] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm sorry.
[00:23:42] [SPEAKER_01]: So, when you go out there, there's, from what I understand from listening to other people and talking to other people, too, a lot of these spots in, like, Colorado and California and the Pacific Northwest, you can get out somewhere.
[00:23:56] [SPEAKER_01]: And there's just, like, trails upon trails upon trails that you can go and explore.
[00:24:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Or have you, like, how many different spots have you gone out to?
[00:24:06] [SPEAKER_01]: And do you always try to go somewhere new?
[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Or are you revisiting a lot of the same spots?
[00:24:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's a good question.
[00:24:13] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a little bit of both.
[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_04]: There's just so much excitement when you're exploring a place for the first time.
[00:24:20] [SPEAKER_04]: That's really what kept me going as I was getting into this kind of off-roading community.
[00:24:24] [SPEAKER_04]: And there's definitely places I go back to pretty regularly.
[00:24:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Mount Hood is one of them.
[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_04]: There's another spot pretty close to us.
[00:24:32] [SPEAKER_04]: It's just referred to as Goat Mountain.
[00:24:34] [SPEAKER_04]: And that's where the majority of my content has come from.
[00:24:38] [SPEAKER_04]: That's about a 30-minute drive from us.
[00:24:41] [SPEAKER_04]: And it's close enough but also far enough away that the temperature is different there.
[00:24:46] [SPEAKER_04]: And they usually get snow a lot earlier in that spot.
[00:24:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's nice.
[00:24:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:24:52] [SPEAKER_04]: But Central Oregon, it just seems endless with the amount of trails that are out there.
[00:24:58] [SPEAKER_04]: You can stay on the main road or there's just hundreds of these little side quests that you can start exploring.
[00:25:05] [SPEAKER_04]: And just more recently started going up into Washington too.
[00:25:09] [SPEAKER_04]: And again, that kind of seems endless too.
[00:25:12] [SPEAKER_04]: So there's a lot of trails left out there for me.
[00:25:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:25:16] [SPEAKER_01]: My son and I went up to Washington.
[00:25:18] [SPEAKER_01]: And we were – I don't remember exactly where we were.
[00:25:24] [SPEAKER_01]: And we were in a forest.
[00:25:25] [SPEAKER_01]: And we met up with Rugged Root Crew.
[00:25:29] [SPEAKER_01]: And Charlie, who goes by Falcon Roo 1, let me borrow his outpack while we were up there.
[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_01]: So that was fun.
[00:25:34] [SPEAKER_01]: And we just got to see some pretty cool spots.
[00:25:37] [SPEAKER_01]: But we would have been able to see more.
[00:25:40] [SPEAKER_01]: But there was a lot of the paths that were closed off because of snow.
[00:25:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:25:46] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'd like to go up there again at some point and, you know, to explore some stuff.
[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_01]: But it's just – it's hard to get up there because we have to fly, you know.
[00:25:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Unless I'm able to take like a week and a half off, which is really hard to do to drive.
[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Because I remember I was thinking about driving.
[00:26:02] [SPEAKER_01]: And it said like one day in 10 hours or something.
[00:26:05] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, okay, that's a little ridiculous.
[00:26:07] [SPEAKER_01]: But it's kind of far.
[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
[00:26:11] [SPEAKER_01]: So what have you – when you've been out, like what would you say has been like the most challenging spot that you've been to?
[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_04]: There's a road that is up on Mount Hood that I actually finally just got all the way up.
[00:26:26] [SPEAKER_04]: But I probably attempted it maybe three or four times before.
[00:26:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Wow.
[00:26:29] [SPEAKER_04]: It's really like any combination of like a moderate to steep incline with a lot of kind of big loose rocks, loose sand, loose soil.
[00:26:40] [SPEAKER_04]: It's just – Subarus hate that.
[00:26:43] [SPEAKER_04]: But I went back up there again.
[00:26:45] [SPEAKER_04]: It was just a week ago, two weeks ago.
[00:26:47] [SPEAKER_04]: And this was like a completely different combination of tires, suspension, torque locker in here now.
[00:26:55] [SPEAKER_04]: And finally made it up.
[00:26:58] [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, any spot that has that combination has been a challenge.
[00:27:03] [SPEAKER_04]: So I tried to go back up there until I can get to the spot where I want to go to.
[00:27:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Can you tell that the torque locker was really, really helpful in getting up that spot?
[00:27:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, absolutely.
[00:27:14] [SPEAKER_04]: Absolutely.
[00:27:14] [SPEAKER_04]: It's really easy to tell, especially when I look back at some of the videos because normally the videos I've taken in that same spot in the past, the tires are just spinning all over the place.
[00:27:23] [SPEAKER_04]: And the car kind of just stalls.
[00:27:26] [SPEAKER_04]: But it's just slowing the tires down and continuing to get that grip and working the way up pretty slowly.
[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, absolutely.
[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's been very helpful for a lot of people depending on some of the spots they go to where they have trouble.
[00:27:40] [SPEAKER_01]: And then they get the torque locker and it makes it a lot easier.
[00:27:43] [SPEAKER_01]: And then it makes it more fun because then you can explore more and try more difficult paths.
[00:27:49] [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, it just kind of opens up more opportunities.
[00:27:53] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, definitely.
[00:27:54] [SPEAKER_04]: I really didn't know a whole lot about them.
[00:27:56] [SPEAKER_04]: But in hindsight, I wish that was one of the first mods that I had done.
[00:28:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Even just from a tires standpoint, like I burned through those first set of wild peaks that I had pretty quickly just from spinning them so many times along rocks.
[00:28:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Like there's a couple of videos I've taken where you can just see the smoke coming from the rubber on rocks.
[00:28:15] [SPEAKER_04]: And like I really didn't have to send it as hard with the torque locker.
[00:28:20] [SPEAKER_01]: How many miles would you say you got out of that first set?
[00:28:26] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't even know if I got 20,000 miles on those seats.
[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's pretty bad.
[00:28:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, my first...
[00:28:32] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, they're still using them.
[00:28:33] [SPEAKER_04]: I still have them like as a backup pair and they still have tread on them.
[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_04]: But not nearly is what used to be on them.
[00:28:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:28:39] [SPEAKER_01]: So my, you know, I've been off-road with my car.
[00:28:43] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I've been to spots that have...
[00:28:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Because we go to Bastrop when we can and there's a lot of gravel there and a lot of loose gravel.
[00:28:49] [SPEAKER_01]: And I've had a lot of tires spin.
[00:28:50] [SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, not going out as much as a lot of other people, my first set of Toyos lasted me like 70,000 miles.
[00:28:57] [SPEAKER_01]: So I was very grateful for that.
[00:29:00] [SPEAKER_01]: And I know a big part of that was rotating them on a consistent basis.
[00:29:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Because that's the first...
[00:29:04] [SPEAKER_01]: This car is the first car I've ever owned where I've actually rotated my tires consistently.
[00:29:09] [SPEAKER_01]: And they've lasted.
[00:29:10] [SPEAKER_01]: So definitely a huge plus.
[00:29:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
[00:29:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Maybe I should do that.
[00:29:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:29:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I've been like with my first set, I rotated them every 6,000 miles like without fail.
[00:29:21] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know, not exactly 6,000.
[00:29:23] [SPEAKER_01]: But, I mean, right around there.
[00:29:25] [SPEAKER_01]: And because like what would happen with my other cars is I wouldn't rotate them.
[00:29:30] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, oh, my front tires are getting a little like shabby and, you know, worn on the ends.
[00:29:36] [SPEAKER_01]: And the tread is going away.
[00:29:37] [SPEAKER_01]: But the back tires still look really good.
[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_01]: So let me just go take a discount tire and have them put the back tires on the front.
[00:29:44] [SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, my tires wouldn't seem to last very long.
[00:29:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Like maybe 30,000 or 40,000 miles.
[00:29:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:29:51] [SPEAKER_01]: So rotating them I know was probably the biggest and like best thing to do for them to make them last for so long.
[00:30:00] [SPEAKER_01]: It's important.
[00:30:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:30:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Rotate your tires.
[00:30:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Done it once on the Forester.
[00:30:05] [SPEAKER_04]: I probably should be doing it more often.
[00:30:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:30:09] [SPEAKER_01]: So have you ever gotten stuck?
[00:30:12] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you mentioned snow earlier.
[00:30:13] [SPEAKER_01]: So I know you get snow up there.
[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure you've probably seen some mud.
[00:30:17] [SPEAKER_01]: But have you ever gotten stuck?
[00:30:18] [SPEAKER_04]: I have.
[00:30:19] [SPEAKER_04]: Many, many times.
[00:30:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, all right.
[00:30:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:30:22] [SPEAKER_04]: In both snow and mud and some sand once.
[00:30:26] [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah.
[00:30:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:30:29] [SPEAKER_04]: We could probably spend the next hour talking about just different times I've gotten stuck and all the adventures getting out.
[00:30:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Which one was the worst then?
[00:30:37] [SPEAKER_04]: So we were out.
[00:30:39] [SPEAKER_04]: So this was like two days before Christmas this last December.
[00:30:43] [SPEAKER_04]: We took the kids out.
[00:30:44] [SPEAKER_04]: We went sledding.
[00:30:46] [SPEAKER_04]: And we were kind of on our way back on a trail that I'd been on before.
[00:30:48] [SPEAKER_04]: And I knew there was one kind of incline with this pretty sharp curve was coming up.
[00:30:54] [SPEAKER_04]: And there was, you know, probably six to eight inches of snow.
[00:30:57] [SPEAKER_04]: But this road has a washout in it.
[00:30:59] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's pretty much just really difficult to get through and not ideal for the Subaru.
[00:31:05] [SPEAKER_04]: But I had done it before.
[00:31:07] [SPEAKER_04]: So I figured we're going to do it again.
[00:31:08] [SPEAKER_04]: It's going to be fine.
[00:31:09] [SPEAKER_04]: And get like halfway up this part.
[00:31:12] [SPEAKER_04]: And doesn't want to go any further.
[00:31:14] [SPEAKER_04]: And kind of back down and tried it again.
[00:31:16] [SPEAKER_04]: And didn't go any further than that.
[00:31:17] [SPEAKER_04]: So at that point, I'm like, okay, I know where this is going to go.
[00:31:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Let's just back up, turn around, and go back.
[00:31:23] [SPEAKER_04]: But as I'm backing up, the car starts to slide down to the left, down towards this hillside.
[00:31:31] [SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, I kind of know where that's going to.
[00:31:34] [SPEAKER_04]: But I was able to kind of stop and almost started to get a turn around.
[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_04]: But every time I tried to turn it, it would just slide further and further towards this hillside.
[00:31:40] [SPEAKER_04]: And we ended up getting stuck on this big boulder that was underneath the snow.
[00:31:44] [SPEAKER_04]: And but I had, you know, I had my winch set up.
[00:31:47] [SPEAKER_04]: And I had all my recovery gear.
[00:31:49] [SPEAKER_04]: So I'm starting to pull this out and the winch rope breaks.
[00:31:53] [SPEAKER_04]: So the thing just snaps in half.
[00:31:55] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, my gosh.
[00:31:56] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm like starting to worry a little bit.
[00:31:58] [SPEAKER_04]: But I tried a couple of knots trying to get it back together just for the time being.
[00:32:03] [SPEAKER_04]: And it lasts a little bit.
[00:32:04] [SPEAKER_04]: But then it snapped again in a different spot.
[00:32:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, my gosh.
[00:32:08] [SPEAKER_04]: But I ended up figuring out some different knot to tie the rope back together.
[00:32:13] [SPEAKER_04]: And then altogether, I think I had like over 100 feet of straps and things.
[00:32:17] [SPEAKER_04]: So I could only use the winch about 10 yards at a time for where the knot was.
[00:32:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:32:22] [SPEAKER_04]: So I get to the winch and then it went any further.
[00:32:25] [SPEAKER_04]: So all in all, it took us, I think, four hours altogether to get out of this.
[00:32:29] [SPEAKER_04]: And it was like...
[00:32:30] [SPEAKER_04]: To get out?
[00:32:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:32:32] [SPEAKER_04]: It was like 830 or 9 o'clock at night by the time we finally got out of this pit.
[00:32:37] [SPEAKER_04]: We had the dogs with us and they hadn't had any food.
[00:32:40] [SPEAKER_04]: And we're all cranky and everything.
[00:32:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Wow, that's crazy.
[00:32:44] [SPEAKER_01]: That's a long time to be out there.
[00:32:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:32:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's definitely the good one.
[00:32:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
[00:32:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:32:53] [SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, snow is kind of scary, it seems like.
[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, you get more...
[00:32:58] [SPEAKER_01]: It seems like people have more sliding and concerns with snow because you can't really see what's underneath.
[00:33:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Whereas with mud, I mean, unless you're going through a big mud pit, you don't know if there's like big rocks in there or something.
[00:33:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Somebody threw a big giant battery in there or something.
[00:33:12] [SPEAKER_01]: But it's not as scary and you could go, you know, slower.
[00:33:16] [SPEAKER_01]: But you're not going to like slide down a hill or off a mountain, you know, with a mud puddle.
[00:33:22] [SPEAKER_01]: But with snow, it just seems a little scary.
[00:33:24] [SPEAKER_04]: I've come pretty close to that too.
[00:33:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, really?
[00:33:26] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, you're right.
[00:33:27] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, it's usually pretty easy to tell in snow, like where the boulders are.
[00:33:30] [SPEAKER_04]: It's just a little mound sticking up.
[00:33:32] [SPEAKER_04]: But I've hit some things too that I had no idea were underneath the snow.
[00:33:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm sure that was fun.
[00:33:39] [SPEAKER_01]: So what would you say is your favorite, snow or mud?
[00:33:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Definitely snow.
[00:33:44] [SPEAKER_01]: The drive-thru.
[00:33:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:33:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:33:46] [SPEAKER_04]: I actually don't really do a whole lot of mud stuff.
[00:33:50] [SPEAKER_04]: There's a lot of like off-road and like OHV parks that are up here and they have a lot of mud puddles.
[00:33:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Almost like their size of pools basically.
[00:33:59] [SPEAKER_04]: But it's more just driving through the puddle.
[00:34:01] [SPEAKER_04]: It's not as much as the mud aspect of it.
[00:34:04] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah.
[00:34:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I know I've seen other people with videos of just going through like these giant mud pits.
[00:34:09] [SPEAKER_04]: And yeah, I haven't gone through many of those.
[00:34:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Mud is fun.
[00:34:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Like we get some pretty decent mud out here.
[00:34:16] [SPEAKER_01]: It's fun.
[00:34:16] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's just not fun getting it out of the wheel wells.
[00:34:19] [SPEAKER_01]: That's the worst part.
[00:34:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:34:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:34:22] [SPEAKER_01]: And the last time I went to go change my oil.
[00:34:25] [SPEAKER_01]: So I have the primitive skid plate and I've got the hole so that I can get to the Fumoto valve.
[00:34:32] [SPEAKER_01]: And I was getting ready to go change my oil.
[00:34:34] [SPEAKER_01]: I was at my friend's house and drove it up on their ramps, get underneath there.
[00:34:39] [SPEAKER_01]: And there's this big chunk of just dried up mud that's hanging out of the hole that who knows how long had been there.
[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_01]: So I had to like kind of break it up.
[00:34:48] [SPEAKER_01]: And then there was like more chunks coming out of the hole.
[00:34:51] [SPEAKER_01]: And then I was like, you know what?
[00:34:53] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just going to take the skid plate off because I know it's got just tons of rocks and mud and, you know, whatever up there.
[00:35:00] [SPEAKER_01]: I get the bolts off at the back, like towards the back of the car, the backside of the skid plate.
[00:35:05] [SPEAKER_01]: And then I go and I undo, get the bolts off the front.
[00:35:09] [SPEAKER_01]: And the front lip or something was just stuck.
[00:35:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Like it would not come down.
[00:35:14] [SPEAKER_01]: It had a rubber mallet and I'm trying to like knock it.
[00:35:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if it was just stuck on the little threads that were coming down through it.
[00:35:22] [SPEAKER_01]: And I just couldn't get it off or what.
[00:35:24] [SPEAKER_01]: But I could never get the front off.
[00:35:26] [SPEAKER_01]: But so the back was hanging out a little bit.
[00:35:28] [SPEAKER_01]: I just kept pulling it down and letting it hit.
[00:35:31] [SPEAKER_01]: And it was go bang, bang.
[00:35:33] [SPEAKER_01]: And like all this dirt was just coming out on both sides.
[00:35:36] [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah.
[00:35:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:35:37] [SPEAKER_01]: So one of these days I'd like to try to actually get it off and see what's under there.
[00:35:42] [SPEAKER_01]: And then there's like all these little plastic panels that go underneath.
[00:35:47] [SPEAKER_01]: They have holes in them.
[00:35:48] [SPEAKER_01]: And if I bang on those, like all this dirt comes out.
[00:35:52] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, those are the ones with the little tabs.
[00:35:54] [SPEAKER_01]: And I've wanted to take those out too.
[00:35:56] [SPEAKER_01]: But I don't have extra tabs in case I break some off.
[00:35:59] [SPEAKER_01]: But I know there's just like all kinds of dirt under my car.
[00:36:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Most of those plastic things have just fallen off on my car.
[00:36:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
[00:36:08] [SPEAKER_04]: So many different puddles of things.
[00:36:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Like if you hit a puddle at the right speed, those things are going to just fly off.
[00:36:12] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, I've stocked up on some of those little clips.
[00:36:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:36:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I have a little.
[00:36:17] [SPEAKER_01]: There's like some kind of little straight panel, like plastic panel that was in the front,
[00:36:23] [SPEAKER_01]: like before the front wheel well.
[00:36:25] [SPEAKER_01]: And I drove through a mud puddle and bash drop and got under there and it was hanging.
[00:36:30] [SPEAKER_01]: And I tried to like clip it back up and it just wasn't doing well.
[00:36:34] [SPEAKER_01]: So I just like pulled it off and just threw it in the back.
[00:36:37] [SPEAKER_01]: And then I think the other one eventually came off too.
[00:36:40] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, I guess I didn't need those, you know, but it's okay.
[00:36:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Keep your engine clean, but that's about it.
[00:36:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:36:48] [SPEAKER_01]: So when you're going out to these different trails, are you constantly trying to like challenge
[00:36:54] [SPEAKER_01]: yourself in your forester and like, you know, seeing something and thinking that looks sketchy?
[00:36:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's go try that out.
[00:37:03] [SPEAKER_04]: That would actually make a great sticker.
[00:37:05] [SPEAKER_04]: I think that's good.
[00:37:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that would.
[00:37:09] [SPEAKER_01]: That looks sketchy.
[00:37:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's go.
[00:37:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Honestly, Ralph, like that is, that is my exact mentality right there.
[00:37:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Even like last night when we went on the trail run with some friends, I could, I was
[00:37:20] [SPEAKER_04]: looking for those things that were sketchy to go and try.
[00:37:22] [SPEAKER_04]: And I was able to do some of them, but not all of them.
[00:37:25] [SPEAKER_04]: And even when I'm out with my family, like if we're just on like a main trail road and
[00:37:29] [SPEAKER_04]: they see something, they're like, oh, you're not going to stop.
[00:37:31] [SPEAKER_04]: You're not going to go try that.
[00:37:32] [SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, most of the time I'll hit the brakes and back up and try it.
[00:37:36] [SPEAKER_04]: But that's, that's what drives me a lot of the time with the forester is just being able
[00:37:43] [SPEAKER_04]: to go find those spots that, you know, I don't, I don't think I can get up that, but I'm going
[00:37:47] [SPEAKER_04]: to give it a try.
[00:37:47] [SPEAKER_01]: So has there been anything or like a situation that was like actually genuinely scary where
[00:37:54] [SPEAKER_01]: you were worried you weren't going to make it through?
[00:37:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Or I know you've been on like two wheels and three wheels.
[00:38:01] [SPEAKER_01]: It seems like on, you know, over and down some stuff.
[00:38:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Has there been anything that's like scared you where you thought like, I don't know if
[00:38:08] [SPEAKER_01]: this, this might tip over all the way if I'm not too careful.
[00:38:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:38:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, I think that first one was that story I shared just getting stuck in the snow, but
[00:38:17] [SPEAKER_04]: I've had other experiences that are pretty similar to that.
[00:38:20] [SPEAKER_04]: And another one, it was more of like a muddy hill that I was trying to get up and actually
[00:38:26] [SPEAKER_04]: been in the same spot that the night before with my son and we were doing some off-roading.
[00:38:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And as you're coming out of this park, there's just these massive, it's almost like pools,
[00:38:35] [SPEAKER_04]: like these giant pools of water that I've gone through many times.
[00:38:39] [SPEAKER_04]: And so I asked my son to get out and film me and my guy, I'm just going to hit this and
[00:38:44] [SPEAKER_04]: we'll get out of here.
[00:38:44] [SPEAKER_04]: And then for whatever reason, like that time that I hit this water, like it was just a
[00:38:50] [SPEAKER_04]: wave that came over the front of the car, like up on the windshield.
[00:38:53] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, wow.
[00:38:54] [SPEAKER_04]: And I'm like in the middle of this thing and the car just dies, just, just stops.
[00:38:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:38:59] [SPEAKER_04]: That's so I'm like, there is a video.
[00:39:02] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't think I ever posted the video, but I shared it with a couple of people.
[00:39:05] [SPEAKER_04]: You can just see me in the car.
[00:39:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Like my head goes down into my hands.
[00:39:08] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, I knew I'm screwed.
[00:39:10] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm not going to get out of this, but thankfully it started back up.
[00:39:13] [SPEAKER_04]: But when I didn't watch the video until we got home that night and like my son is showing
[00:39:19] [SPEAKER_04]: it to me and I see this part like float away from underneath the car.
[00:39:25] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, Bob, did you see this thing?
[00:39:27] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like, yeah, I didn't know what it was.
[00:39:28] [SPEAKER_04]: I didn't think it was part of your car.
[00:39:29] [SPEAKER_04]: I thought it was just already in the water.
[00:39:32] [SPEAKER_04]: But I can't remember the name of it.
[00:39:33] [SPEAKER_04]: It's not the water or the windshield wiper fluid thing.
[00:39:37] [SPEAKER_04]: It's it's on the other side.
[00:39:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Another big plastic thing.
[00:39:40] [SPEAKER_04]: And like, I probably need that.
[00:39:42] [SPEAKER_04]: So I drove back there the next morning before work.
[00:39:45] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like four in the morning.
[00:39:46] [SPEAKER_04]: The parts just laying by this, the water again and grab that.
[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_04]: And I'm like, well, I don't need to work for like another couple hours.
[00:39:53] [SPEAKER_04]: I'll just go check out some trails while I'm here and ended up going down one hill.
[00:39:58] [SPEAKER_04]: And it got really narrow towards the end.
[00:40:00] [SPEAKER_04]: And then all of a sudden it had a sign that this was like a like a dirt bike or a quad type of trail.
[00:40:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah.
[00:40:05] [SPEAKER_04]: So I couldn't fit in there.
[00:40:07] [SPEAKER_04]: And even if I tried and turned around and started coming back up this hill.
[00:40:11] [SPEAKER_04]: But halfway up, there's like this like water drainage runoff ditch.
[00:40:17] [SPEAKER_04]: So I made it through that.
[00:40:18] [SPEAKER_04]: And then as I'm trying to go back up, it's just tires start spinning.
[00:40:21] [SPEAKER_04]: It's just really muddy and sloppy.
[00:40:23] [SPEAKER_04]: And the car immediately just starts going down to the right and down towards this hillside.
[00:40:28] [SPEAKER_04]: And this one, I think, was scarier than that snow one.
[00:40:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Because like obviously, you know, it's early in the morning.
[00:40:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Nobody's out there.
[00:40:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:40:36] [SPEAKER_04]: But just the way the car was moving and handling, I knew that if I tried, I was just going to slide down this hill.
[00:40:43] [SPEAKER_04]: So I was in all my work clothes at the time and got out with all my recovery gear and was able to get myself out of it.
[00:40:50] [SPEAKER_04]: But my shoes were all just trash when I got to work and cleaned them all up.
[00:40:55] [SPEAKER_04]: But that was probably more scary to me than the other one I mentioned earlier.
[00:41:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:41:00] [SPEAKER_01]: One, you're by yourself.
[00:41:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Two, it's super early.
[00:41:03] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm guessing it was probably still dark.
[00:41:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah.
[00:41:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:41:06] [SPEAKER_04]: It was probably like 4 or 4.30 in the morning still.
[00:41:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:41:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:41:10] [SPEAKER_01]: That's not fun.
[00:41:12] [SPEAKER_04]: It's not fun.
[00:41:13] [SPEAKER_04]: It's fun but not fun.
[00:41:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Exactly.
[00:41:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:41:16] [SPEAKER_04]: And like I never take videos or anything during those times.
[00:41:18] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm so stressed out and kind of freaking out.
[00:41:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, am I going to be able to get out of here?
[00:41:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, is this it?
[00:41:22] [SPEAKER_04]: But then looking back and be able to talk about it, it's more fun now.
[00:41:27] [SPEAKER_01]: So you said that your mentality is like, hey, that looks sketchy.
[00:41:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's go.
[00:41:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Now, I know not too long ago you met up with Mountain Subi and Silver Bullet XV.
[00:41:38] [SPEAKER_01]: And they're always going through sketchy stuff, you know.
[00:41:41] [SPEAKER_01]: So what was that experience like getting out with them?
[00:41:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, did they challenge you more than you thought that you, you know, maybe did some
[00:41:52] [SPEAKER_01]: things that you didn't think you were able to do?
[00:41:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Like, what was just the whole experience like?
[00:41:57] [SPEAKER_04]: That was amazing.
[00:41:59] [SPEAKER_04]: They are such great people.
[00:42:00] [SPEAKER_04]: And the whole crew that we were with that time was amazing.
[00:42:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, I was trying to think back.
[00:42:06] [SPEAKER_04]: I remember getting a message from Milton just randomly.
[00:42:10] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know if we had ever communicated before, but he sends me a message.
[00:42:14] [SPEAKER_04]: I think this was back in March or April.
[00:42:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Just like, hey, we're getting a crew together.
[00:42:18] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, we've kind of liked what you're doing.
[00:42:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Would you be interested in coming up and joining us?
[00:42:22] [SPEAKER_04]: And I'm like, hell yeah, I would.
[00:42:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, this is amazing.
[00:42:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, let's do it.
[00:42:26] [SPEAKER_04]: Tell my wife and tell them what people work with.
[00:42:28] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, you don't get it.
[00:42:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, when you think of like off-roading Subaru enthusiasts, like this is it.
[00:42:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
[00:42:35] [SPEAKER_04]: But then there was like, like Glenn came out.
[00:42:38] [SPEAKER_04]: He drove like all the way from Virginia to come out to this thing.
[00:42:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, wow.
[00:42:43] [SPEAKER_04]: Matty, I think it's SK Faw's account.
[00:42:46] [SPEAKER_04]: He drove up from New Mexico.
[00:42:47] [SPEAKER_04]: And then a lot of the rugged root crew was there.
[00:42:51] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, it was just a lot of fun, like going on these different trails.
[00:42:57] [SPEAKER_04]: We did go to one of the OHP parks up by them.
[00:43:00] [SPEAKER_04]: And that was probably the most challenging courses I think we did while we were there.
[00:43:04] [SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, they're just going like as fast as they can through some of these obstacles.
[00:43:09] [SPEAKER_04]: And I'm just like, I can't.
[00:43:11] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm just not going to break them if I do that.
[00:43:13] [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I've been with them.
[00:43:15] [SPEAKER_04]: I think I had the locker at the time too.
[00:43:16] [SPEAKER_04]: So I wasn't going as fast as they were going.
[00:43:19] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah.
[00:43:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:43:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:43:20] [SPEAKER_01]: I've ridden with Milton.
[00:43:22] [SPEAKER_01]: We were on a trail on time doing like 60 miles an hour and jumped his car.
[00:43:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:43:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:43:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:43:28] [SPEAKER_01]: They just go.
[00:43:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they just go.
[00:43:31] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, if I had driven out here and were on these trails with Pearl, I'd be way,
[00:43:36] [SPEAKER_01]: way back there behind them.
[00:43:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Yep.
[00:43:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:43:40] [SPEAKER_04]: I was starting to hang back a little bit.
[00:43:41] [SPEAKER_04]: I was trying to keep up with it.
[00:43:42] [SPEAKER_04]: I was like, my car was just smacking in the rocks and different things.
[00:43:45] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, yeah, I got like a three and a half hour drive to get home.
[00:43:48] [SPEAKER_04]: I got to make sure I can get out of this.
[00:43:49] [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, exactly.
[00:43:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I guess they didn't get you into anything that you couldn't get out of.
[00:43:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Milton on that trip.
[00:43:55] [SPEAKER_01]: That's good.
[00:43:56] [SPEAKER_01]: That's good.
[00:43:57] [SPEAKER_01]: So do you, how often are you going out by yourself?
[00:44:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Cause it sounds like you do go out by yourself some and then, but you also go out with people.
[00:44:05] [SPEAKER_01]: So like, what's the, I guess the percentage of how often you go by yourself and how often
[00:44:10] [SPEAKER_01]: you go with other people?
[00:44:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:44:13] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I used to just be all by myself or with family.
[00:44:16] [SPEAKER_04]: I would say within the last year though, it's probably at least 50, 50 that I'm at
[00:44:21] [SPEAKER_04]: least going out with one other person.
[00:44:23] [SPEAKER_04]: And I think there's benefits to both.
[00:44:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Like I do, you know, that kind of count.
[00:44:27] [SPEAKER_04]: This is like my mental therapy when I just go out with my, myself or the family or the
[00:44:31] [SPEAKER_04]: dogs and just go find a spot and walk around the woods or put up some hammocks.
[00:44:35] [SPEAKER_04]: But it's also pretty enjoyable being out with some people and, you know, either teaching
[00:44:40] [SPEAKER_04]: them or just going out for a drive and finding some spots to chill.
[00:44:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:44:44] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's, it's always great being with other people, but then, you know, driving
[00:44:48] [SPEAKER_01]: by yourself, you can go wherever you want to stop whenever you want to.
[00:44:53] [SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, not that you're like having to worry about other people, but you just, there's,
[00:44:58] [SPEAKER_01]: there's no other concern at all.
[00:45:00] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, you just go and do what you want to do, but, but then you're also alone.
[00:45:05] [SPEAKER_01]: And so that's, what's nice about being with other people is you can, like you said, stop
[00:45:08] [SPEAKER_01]: and chill and talk and just hang out and have a good time.
[00:45:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, yeah.
[00:45:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:45:13] [SPEAKER_04]: I definitely explore more.
[00:45:15] [SPEAKER_04]: I think when I'm just about by myself, like I'm not worried about, you know, if I'm holding
[00:45:20] [SPEAKER_04]: people up by like, oh, let's go, let's go right.
[00:45:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Instead of going straight this time.
[00:45:23] [SPEAKER_04]: And yeah, you know, if any type of side road or side route I see, I definitely want to
[00:45:28] [SPEAKER_04]: check them out, but yeah.
[00:45:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:45:31] [SPEAKER_01]: I went for a drive earlier and I drove to some areas cause like it's, it gets pretty rural
[00:45:36] [SPEAKER_01]: out here in some spots where there's not, there's a lot of just pasture land and stuff.
[00:45:42] [SPEAKER_01]: And I was driving and I saw this one road and I was like, I'm just going to turn down
[00:45:47] [SPEAKER_01]: that road.
[00:45:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Cause I recognize the road and I know it like meets up with some other spots that I know
[00:45:51] [SPEAKER_01]: of.
[00:45:52] [SPEAKER_01]: So I come up to it and I'm like, oh, it's gravel.
[00:45:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Cool.
[00:45:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Let me try to do like a little fishtailing as I'm going down here and had a little bit of
[00:46:00] [SPEAKER_01]: fun, but yeah, it's nice to just pull off on into a road.
[00:46:05] [SPEAKER_01]: You don't really know where it goes.
[00:46:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely.
[00:46:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
[00:46:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I don't know if you were like actually requested to do that or if you were just
[00:46:19] [SPEAKER_01]: there to take video of them in this one spot, but what was that experience like?
[00:46:24] [SPEAKER_04]: That was awesome.
[00:46:25] [SPEAKER_04]: I've gone to the Oregon Trail Rally a couple of times now.
[00:46:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, this time I signed up to volunteer and just happened to be placed at the finish line
[00:46:33] [SPEAKER_04]: of stages.
[00:46:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Nice.
[00:46:36] [SPEAKER_04]: And I had all my camera gear with me.
[00:46:38] [SPEAKER_04]: So I set it up right at the finish line and got to see every single car come hauling as
[00:46:44] [SPEAKER_04]: fast as they could down through the final stage of this course.
[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_04]: And it's incredible.
[00:46:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Like just as faster they're going on these courses, like there's just so many like unpredictable
[00:46:58] [SPEAKER_04]: factors that come up that you totally have to be like just the right mentality to have
[00:47:05] [SPEAKER_04]: that.
[00:47:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:47:06] [SPEAKER_01]: And they're really good.
[00:47:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
[00:47:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Cause you, you know, you watch like launch control and they have a lot of the in car footage
[00:47:15] [SPEAKER_01]: and they're, they're going really, really fast.
[00:47:18] [SPEAKER_01]: And then they have these turns that come up and they're taking these turns, not like it's
[00:47:24] [SPEAKER_01]: not nothing, but they take these turns with just such confidence, you know, that they,
[00:47:30] [SPEAKER_01]: you know, it's just, it's like, it's kind of second nature for them to do that.
[00:47:34] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, you think about if you tried to do that, you're like, man, I would just
[00:47:39] [SPEAKER_01]: like spin out, flip the car, you know, run into a tree, whatever.
[00:47:43] [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, they're, they're really good and highly, highly skilled.
[00:47:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:47:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:47:48] [SPEAKER_04]: I fish tail and almost slide into trees going like 25 miles an hour on somebody's tree.
[00:47:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:47:53] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm sure seeing that in person has just got to be incredible.
[00:47:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Not just this, you know, seeing them driving, but like the sound of the cars and, you know,
[00:48:01] [SPEAKER_01]: the tires on the gravel, just that whole experience, I'm sure it's pretty incredible.
[00:48:05] [SPEAKER_04]: It is.
[00:48:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:48:06] [SPEAKER_04]: If you're passionate about racing and like watching a rally that close is incredible experience.
[00:48:13] [SPEAKER_01]: So you said you've been there twice.
[00:48:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Is that the only rally event that you've been to?
[00:48:19] [SPEAKER_04]: That's probably the biggest ones I've gone to.
[00:48:21] [SPEAKER_04]: I've started going to the ones that Milton and Kerry are doing now with the Northwest
[00:48:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Rally Association.
[00:48:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah.
[00:48:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:48:27] [SPEAKER_04]: They've got their, I think it's a Impreza now or CrossFit that they're using.
[00:48:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:48:33] [SPEAKER_04]: It's an Impreza.
[00:48:34] [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, I've gone to watch them a couple of times.
[00:48:36] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm actually going up again.
[00:48:37] [SPEAKER_04]: I think their last races are the next weekend.
[00:48:40] [SPEAKER_04]: So I'm going to go watch that last one too.
[00:48:42] [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, it's been a lot of, a lot of fun.
[00:48:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Is that something you think you would be interested in trying at some point?
[00:48:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Uh, absolutely.
[00:48:52] [SPEAKER_04]: Absolutely.
[00:48:54] [SPEAKER_04]: I, I grew up watching just like dirt track racing, um, as far back when I was like in
[00:48:59] [SPEAKER_04]: kindergarten, first grade and always thought it'd be cool to do it.
[00:49:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Just never, never felt like I had an opportunity or really took it seriously enough.
[00:49:08] [SPEAKER_04]: But you know, now that I'm a lot closer to it, um, and know people that are into it and
[00:49:12] [SPEAKER_04]: really just like the cars that I see people out there driving in, it was like, I could probably
[00:49:18] [SPEAKER_04]: spend 500 bucks and get this kind of car and get it running and just put a couple of things
[00:49:22] [SPEAKER_04]: on it.
[00:49:22] [SPEAKER_04]: And yeah, it's just such an amazing group of people on these just, I mean, the variety
[00:49:30] [SPEAKER_04]: of cars that people are driving.
[00:49:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:49:32] [SPEAKER_04]: I would absolutely love to, especially after being in the passenger seat for a couple of
[00:49:36] [SPEAKER_04]: those races too.
[00:49:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Like, Oh, nice.
[00:49:38] [SPEAKER_01]: That's cool.
[00:49:39] [SPEAKER_01]: So what's that like?
[00:49:42] [SPEAKER_04]: It's, I think it's unlike anything I've ever done before.
[00:49:45] [SPEAKER_04]: It's almost like a rollercoaster ride, but you have no control and it's not like you're
[00:49:50] [SPEAKER_04]: like attached to this specific railing on this rollercoaster thing.
[00:49:54] [SPEAKER_04]: But I actually, for the first time at the first race I went to, when I was watching them,
[00:49:59] [SPEAKER_04]: there was a guy that had a, one of the blue WRX wagons and started chatting with him.
[00:50:04] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, Hey, would you mind if I just rode along with you on one of your races?
[00:50:07] [SPEAKER_04]: And he's like, I absolutely just grab a helmet and I've, I had never put on one of those
[00:50:11] [SPEAKER_04]: racing helmets before.
[00:50:13] [SPEAKER_04]: So I'm like jogging around, trying to find one.
[00:50:15] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm out of breath.
[00:50:16] [SPEAKER_04]: And then I find one and come back to the car and I got this helmet and I shove it on.
[00:50:19] [SPEAKER_04]: And it's like instant claustrophobic.
[00:50:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Like I'm, I'm not really that kind of person, but your face is just kind of swallowed in this
[00:50:27] [SPEAKER_04]: mask.
[00:50:27] [SPEAKER_04]: And yeah, all of a sudden I can't breathe very well.
[00:50:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And he's like, all right, here we go.
[00:50:31] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like trying to slow down my breathing a little bit, but yeah, you have no control.
[00:50:36] [SPEAKER_04]: You're just kind of trusting them to, you know, that they know what they're doing and
[00:50:41] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah, it was awesome.
[00:50:42] [SPEAKER_04]: So I did it with him and then I think I rode with Kerry one time too.
[00:50:46] [SPEAKER_04]: So.
[00:50:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's cool.
[00:50:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:50:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:50:48] [SPEAKER_01]: So you, uh, you said that you, you know, you, you had your camera gear there at the end
[00:50:54] [SPEAKER_01]: of that one stage.
[00:50:55] [SPEAKER_01]: So it, it looks like whenever you're out exploring and stuff that you like to have fun with different
[00:51:00] [SPEAKER_01]: camera angles.
[00:51:02] [SPEAKER_01]: So like, what do you enjoy shooting?
[00:51:05] [SPEAKER_01]: That's a good question.
[00:51:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:51:07] [SPEAKER_04]: I try to bring out a lot of different varieties.
[00:51:10] [SPEAKER_04]: So I have like a Canon digital camera that I use a lot.
[00:51:14] [SPEAKER_04]: I have a 360 camera on my drone.
[00:51:17] [SPEAKER_04]: So I try to get just multiple things with, with different mediums, I guess.
[00:51:23] [SPEAKER_04]: So I, my favorite, I really enjoy still photography.
[00:51:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, I used to do a lot of sports photography many years ago before we had kids and nice.
[00:51:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Sorry.
[00:51:33] [SPEAKER_04]: I think that's kind of why I enjoy doing this a lot too.
[00:51:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Just kind of documenting the things that I'm doing out in the woods, but I'm not, uh,
[00:51:42] [SPEAKER_04]: I feel like I'm still kind of figuring out making good videos.
[00:51:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Like really, I'm just kind of.
[00:51:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Just having fun.
[00:51:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Edit.
[00:51:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Exactly.
[00:51:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Having more fun and not really taking the editing part very seriously and throwing a
[00:51:53] [SPEAKER_04]: song on there that I like.
[00:51:54] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah.
[00:51:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:51:56] [SPEAKER_04]: If I had to choose, I definitely like having my SLR camera.
[00:52:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:52:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Drones have definitely like changed video, you know?
[00:52:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, cause you can do so much.
[00:52:09] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you can follow a car, you can, you know, up above, you could follow a car behind
[00:52:13] [SPEAKER_01]: in the front.
[00:52:14] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's just, it's pretty awesome what you can do with those.
[00:52:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:52:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:52:18] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm, as much as I've used it, I still don't feel like I've kind of mastered the controls
[00:52:22] [SPEAKER_04]: and still crashing my drones all the time, but I definitely enjoy using it.
[00:52:27] [SPEAKER_04]: It's, it's gotten easier compared to the ones that I've owned in the past, but.
[00:52:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Is it pretty durable crashing it?
[00:52:34] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, for like the lower end one that I have right now, it, it's very durable.
[00:52:39] [SPEAKER_04]: I feel like it's more durable than some of the more expensive ones that I've had.
[00:52:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's good.
[00:52:43] [SPEAKER_01]: It's nice to, uh, to, uh, have something that you're not having to replace, you know,
[00:52:49] [SPEAKER_01]: after you crash it.
[00:52:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:52:51] [SPEAKER_01]: So you said, you know, that you and your family go out and y'all go off-roading and stuff.
[00:52:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Is that something that they've always had an interest in also going off-road and just
[00:53:00] [SPEAKER_01]: going exploring?
[00:53:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:53:03] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, now that they're almost both in their teens, like it's, it's, I don't know if
[00:53:08] [SPEAKER_04]: it's as enjoyable for them.
[00:53:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, they still like to go out and do things, but as long as they have food, some snacks,
[00:53:16] [SPEAKER_04]: like their devices, like we can be driving around for hours, but you know, they're kind
[00:53:21] [SPEAKER_04]: of at that stage where they'd rather be home with friends or just kind of out doing some
[00:53:24] [SPEAKER_04]: things or just being home and watching TV or whatever.
[00:53:27] [SPEAKER_04]: But I mean, we try to get out as a family at least a couple of times a month to go check
[00:53:31] [SPEAKER_04]: some things out.
[00:53:32] [SPEAKER_04]: And yeah, I definitely don't think my kids enjoy it as much as I do, but my wife loves
[00:53:39] [SPEAKER_04]: going out with me.
[00:53:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Like we went out just the two of us last weekend and just drove around my hood for four or five
[00:53:45] [SPEAKER_04]: hours and checked out some new spots.
[00:53:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:53:48] [SPEAKER_04]: I think she likes that adventure aspect of it as much as I do.
[00:53:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:53:52] [SPEAKER_01]: That's good.
[00:53:52] [SPEAKER_01]: That's important too.
[00:53:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
[00:53:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Does she, uh, does she drive off road too when you're out or is it mostly you driving?
[00:53:59] [SPEAKER_04]: It's mostly me, but like when I want to try and fly the drone and try and get some shots,
[00:54:04] [SPEAKER_04]: I'll, I'll get in the past and she can have her drive.
[00:54:07] [SPEAKER_04]: I think the only time she doesn't like it is if we're, we have like a little teardrop
[00:54:10] [SPEAKER_04]: trailer that we use.
[00:54:11] [SPEAKER_04]: So, uh, yeah, she's not as comfortable with that, but yeah, she does great.
[00:54:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:54:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I saw, I was scrolling through your feed.
[00:54:18] [SPEAKER_01]: I saw that teardrop trailer.
[00:54:20] [SPEAKER_01]: It looks nice.
[00:54:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Y'all get out with that pretty often.
[00:54:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:54:24] [SPEAKER_04]: We don't go out as much as we were before, but I would say probably four or five times
[00:54:31] [SPEAKER_04]: a year.
[00:54:31] [SPEAKER_04]: We'll take that out.
[00:54:32] [SPEAKER_04]: I feel like I've done it more this year already, but yeah, that thing is great.
[00:54:36] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it's just nice to be on over roll up with everything already inside of that thing.
[00:54:39] [SPEAKER_04]: And there's room for at least three adults or two adults and a couple of dogs.
[00:54:43] [SPEAKER_04]: And then we have the rooftop tent on top of it so we can all.
[00:54:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, nice.
[00:54:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Sleep with that.
[00:54:49] [SPEAKER_01]: So, so the whole family can go kitchen.
[00:54:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, exactly.
[00:54:52] [SPEAKER_01]: That's good.
[00:54:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:54:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think I noticed that it had the rooftop tent on top of it, but that's, that's nice
[00:54:58] [SPEAKER_01]: because then, like you said, you've got the cat, the, uh, the teardrop trailer and then
[00:55:02] [SPEAKER_01]: you've got the tent.
[00:55:04] [SPEAKER_01]: So everything you need right there.
[00:55:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Exactly.
[00:55:07] [SPEAKER_01]: That's really cool.
[00:55:08] [SPEAKER_04]: A little kitchen in the back to cook food and everything.
[00:55:11] [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, it's a good little family vehicle.
[00:55:14] [SPEAKER_04]: I think we'd rather have something a little bit bigger that we can stand up in, but this
[00:55:18] [SPEAKER_04]: is like the kids will just go and hang out in the garage sometimes.
[00:55:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Like my sister, my, my sister's daughter was over here yesterday with my daughter and that
[00:55:30] [SPEAKER_04]: was like their, their hangout spot.
[00:55:31] [SPEAKER_04]: So we'll let us go hang out in the, in the trailer for a couple hours.
[00:55:35] [SPEAKER_01]: It's fun for kids to do stuff like that.
[00:55:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:55:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, we play house.
[00:55:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:55:40] [SPEAKER_01]: What would you say about your forest or best matches your personality?
[00:55:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Definitely adventurous, you know, just always, always down for those kind of side roads and
[00:55:49] [SPEAKER_04]: checking out new places.
[00:55:51] [SPEAKER_04]: I think that kind of sums up my forest pretty well.
[00:55:54] [SPEAKER_01]: And if you could describe it in one word, what would it be?
[00:55:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Man, I think this is the hardest question of all the questions you're asking.
[00:56:02] [SPEAKER_04]: I guess evolving or evolved.
[00:56:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:56:08] [SPEAKER_04]: From where it started, like I had no idea it would ever get to the point where it is,
[00:56:11] [SPEAKER_04]: where I'm cutting bumpers and ripping plastic things off the bottom and, you know,
[00:56:16] [SPEAKER_04]: changing suspensions.
[00:56:18] [SPEAKER_04]: It's just, yeah, it's kind of interesting to think about, you know, what's, what's it
[00:56:22] [SPEAKER_04]: going to be like in the next year?
[00:56:23] [SPEAKER_04]: What am I going to try and tweak or.
[00:56:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:56:27] [SPEAKER_01]: So you still have some mods on your list of things that you want to add to it or do?
[00:56:33] [SPEAKER_01]: And is there anything that you're going to, I mean, I know you, you've changed out the
[00:56:36] [SPEAKER_01]: suspension, I'm guessing, since you said you had like a cheaper one.
[00:56:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Are there some things that you're looking to switch out or just add in the near future?
[00:56:46] [SPEAKER_04]: I think the one thing I've been thinking a lot more about is the front, the front bumper
[00:56:52] [SPEAKER_04]: that I have.
[00:56:52] [SPEAKER_04]: It's the worn setup, but it's, it's like 70 pounds or 70 or 80 pounds.
[00:56:57] [SPEAKER_04]: It's, it's really heavy.
[00:56:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, and it kind of just bottom or like this makes the front end sag down a little bit.
[00:57:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:57:04] [SPEAKER_04]: I've always just kind of wondered about, you know, what it would be like with a different
[00:57:07] [SPEAKER_04]: setup at the front.
[00:57:09] [SPEAKER_04]: There's just not a whole lot of options out there for the Forester unless you're doing
[00:57:12] [SPEAKER_04]: something custom, but there's tons of options for the, the cross track, but just not, not
[00:57:18] [SPEAKER_04]: as big as a market for the Forester from what I've told.
[00:57:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:57:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, definitely.
[00:57:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the whole setup that you have looks really, really nice and, you know, it's just,
[00:57:28] [SPEAKER_01]: it's not like crazy out there in your face.
[00:57:31] [SPEAKER_01]: It's all subtle because, you know, everything is kind of blacked out and, you know, it just,
[00:57:36] [SPEAKER_01]: it looks nice and it flows well together.
[00:57:38] [SPEAKER_01]: But so like, what is the, the, uh, I guess the roof rack that you have on there?
[00:57:43] [SPEAKER_01]: I've seen that one before, but, uh, cause I, I, I like the way it kind of flares out on
[00:57:50] [SPEAKER_01]: the front and the sides.
[00:57:52] [SPEAKER_01]: It just kind of gives it a different look.
[00:57:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:57:55] [SPEAKER_04]: So that's made by Nash fab.
[00:57:57] [SPEAKER_04]: They're a local, actually, I didn't know this, but they actually used to live around
[00:58:02] [SPEAKER_04]: the corner from us.
[00:58:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Their son was like, went to school with my kids.
[00:58:07] [SPEAKER_04]: My wife knows his wife and I would always see him like tinkering in the garage.
[00:58:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, I think it was just doing welding stuff, but I had ordered that rack from them.
[00:58:18] [SPEAKER_04]: I think it was around Christmas time last year.
[00:58:20] [SPEAKER_04]: And my wife saw this email and she's like, Nash fab.
[00:58:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Is that like, it's like the Nash's from around the corner.
[00:58:25] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, really?
[00:58:26] [SPEAKER_04]: That's them.
[00:58:27] [SPEAKER_04]: They had moved.
[00:58:29] [SPEAKER_04]: They're still in Oregon.
[00:58:30] [SPEAKER_04]: They're about an hour South of us now, but yeah, they, they've really grown.
[00:58:33] [SPEAKER_04]: They, they make all those, um, the ladders.
[00:58:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:58:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, they make the racks for a bunch of different vehicles now and a bunch of other accessory
[00:58:40] [SPEAKER_04]: stuff.
[00:58:40] [SPEAKER_04]: So I like it.
[00:58:42] [SPEAKER_04]: I just, I like the way it stands out a little bit differently.
[00:58:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:58:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Compared to like the princy racks or the spider racks, but yeah, it looks good.
[00:58:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Do I need it?
[00:58:52] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't, I don't think I actually need it, Raph, but I love the way it looks.
[00:58:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:58:56] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, having a roof rack, you know, whether it's the princy or spider or that, I mean,
[00:59:02] [SPEAKER_01]: it just adds a completely different look to the car.
[00:59:05] [SPEAKER_01]: And cause like I had the cross bars and then the basket and I liked the way that looked,
[00:59:11] [SPEAKER_01]: but it's just, you know, with the basket, you only have so much storage space if you're
[00:59:16] [SPEAKER_01]: actually storing stuff up there.
[00:59:17] [SPEAKER_01]: But, and it also, you know, it's taller, which can kind of look good, but it was like
[00:59:22] [SPEAKER_01]: whenever I put the roof rack on the, cause I got the spider roof rack, it was really
[00:59:27] [SPEAKER_01]: weird at first.
[00:59:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Like it was really hard to get used to.
[00:59:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:59:31] [SPEAKER_01]: And then, and then after a while over time, you know, I started to get used to it, but
[00:59:34] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I just, I like the low profile and how sleek it looks and everything.
[00:59:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:59:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, me too.
[00:59:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:59:41] [SPEAKER_01]: So with all your mods, what would you say is your favorite?
[00:59:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Uh, I would say probably having the torque locker on there and then, and the winch.
[00:59:53] [SPEAKER_04]: I think those are the two that, you know, starting over, I would definitely start with those
[00:59:58] [SPEAKER_04]: things.
[00:59:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:59:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm guessing those are probably the two that are the, been the most useful too.
[01:00:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh yeah, for sure.
[01:00:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Even, even when the rope snaps, you have to tie it in a knot.
[01:00:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[01:00:10] [SPEAKER_04]: I switched, I switched, uh, winch ropes, the brand after that.
[01:00:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:00:15] [SPEAKER_04]: I would imagine probably, I don't want that to happen again.
[01:00:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Exactly.
[01:00:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Exactly.
[01:00:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:00:20] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's good.
[01:00:21] [SPEAKER_01]: How would you say that owning your Subaru, especially now that you have one that's modded
[01:00:27] [SPEAKER_01]: and, you know, you, like you mentioned earlier, you would have never imagined being where
[01:00:31] [SPEAKER_01]: you are now from, you know, when you first bought it, but how would you say that it's changed
[01:00:35] [SPEAKER_01]: your life?
[01:00:37] [SPEAKER_04]: That's a good question too.
[01:00:38] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't really normally think about how it's changing me or just for myself in general,
[01:00:43] [SPEAKER_04]: but, you know, I think it's more about the community, if anything, like the people I've
[01:00:47] [SPEAKER_04]: been able to connect with, not just Subaru owners, but just people that are kind of like
[01:00:53] [SPEAKER_04]: minded around getting out.
[01:00:54] [SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, I've heard other guests say this too, just around, it gives you that opening
[01:00:58] [SPEAKER_04]: to start conversations with people.
[01:01:00] [SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, I think it's kind of pushed me to be less of an introvert and, you know,
[01:01:06] [SPEAKER_04]: initiate some conversations and just, you know, having a car to start with as your talking
[01:01:11] [SPEAKER_04]: point and then get to know the person from there is, it's a great way to get to know people.
[01:01:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:01:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Cause I mean, when you have, when you go meet up with other people and you're there for a
[01:01:22] [SPEAKER_01]: common reason and you all have Subarus, or even if you're, if it's not all Subarus,
[01:01:26] [SPEAKER_01]: if it's just people that are going off road and exploring, you already have something
[01:01:31] [SPEAKER_01]: to talk about and it makes it a lot easier to talk about or talk to people rather than
[01:01:37] [SPEAKER_01]: if you were to go to like a cocktail party or something, you know, with a bunch of random
[01:01:42] [SPEAKER_01]: people, you have no idea what their interests are, you know, walking into that room.
[01:01:47] [SPEAKER_01]: And so to like, cause like I'm very shy in situations like that, where if I go somewhere,
[01:01:54] [SPEAKER_01]: if I know like a couple of people or something, I'm not one to just like go up and start talking
[01:01:58] [SPEAKER_01]: to people like, Hey, what are you doing here?
[01:02:00] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, whatever.
[01:02:02] [SPEAKER_01]: And, but when you go to an event where everybody, like I said, has a common interest and Subarus
[01:02:09] [SPEAKER_01]: or not just going off road, it's just, it opens it up a lot quicker because you could still
[01:02:14] [SPEAKER_01]: be like introverted and shy and like be, you know, hesitant to talk to people.
[01:02:20] [SPEAKER_01]: But if somebody starts talking to you and you know, you won't feel as uncomfortable and
[01:02:25] [SPEAKER_01]: then it's easier to open up and start branching out and talking to other people while you're
[01:02:29] [SPEAKER_01]: there.
[01:02:30] [SPEAKER_01]: It just having that common interest just can really open it up and you know, it makes
[01:02:35] [SPEAKER_01]: you feel at home and, and just not so uncomfortable.
[01:02:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Yep, exactly.
[01:02:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Exactly.
[01:02:42] [SPEAKER_01]: So since you've had about eight or nine Subarus, like you said, do you think you'll always
[01:02:46] [SPEAKER_01]: own a Subaru?
[01:02:48] [SPEAKER_04]: I think so.
[01:02:49] [SPEAKER_04]: I think we'll always at least have one.
[01:02:51] [SPEAKER_04]: My wife could really care less about the car that she's driving.
[01:02:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Every time we, like she knows, like when I started to detail one of our cars that it's
[01:02:59] [SPEAKER_04]: probably getting close to, to trade in events.
[01:03:02] [SPEAKER_04]: So, and she always says like, I don't, I don't care what it is.
[01:03:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Just get me something like XYZ type of thing.
[01:03:09] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, she always wants to go back to like her first car was like really old Volvo.
[01:03:14] [SPEAKER_04]: And she's like, we just find me one of those.
[01:03:15] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, no, that's going to be reliable.
[01:03:19] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[01:03:19] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, yeah, absolutely.
[01:03:21] [SPEAKER_04]: I think I'll always have one.
[01:03:22] [SPEAKER_04]: I just, I love the company.
[01:03:24] [SPEAKER_04]: I love the brand.
[01:03:25] [SPEAKER_04]: They're just so ideal for the Pacific Northwest and safe.
[01:03:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And yeah.
[01:03:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
[01:03:31] [SPEAKER_01]: So is there anything that you want to talk about that we didn't talk about before we
[01:03:35] [SPEAKER_01]: get into this next segment?
[01:03:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Anything you want to share about yourself or your Subaru journey or your Forester?
[01:03:43] [SPEAKER_04]: No, not, not necessarily about me, but I just want to thank you, Raph.
[01:03:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, I don't know if you know the impact that you've had on so many people just around
[01:03:53] [SPEAKER_04]: this community that we were just talking about.
[01:03:55] [SPEAKER_04]: Like you, you have also provided a way for people just to initiate conversations.
[01:03:59] [SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, I hear a lot of guests talk about like their own mental health and just
[01:04:04] [SPEAKER_04]: how important that this community has been.
[01:04:06] [SPEAKER_04]: And yeah, I just want to thank you for being a big part of that, for bringing so many amazing
[01:04:12] [SPEAKER_01]: people together.
[01:04:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you're welcome.
[01:04:13] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know, it wasn't my intention to do that.
[01:04:16] [SPEAKER_01]: It was just like, I had the idea and thought people might be interested in sharing more than
[01:04:21] [SPEAKER_01]: what you can, you know, show on Instagram.
[01:04:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Cause way back then people weren't doing a lot of reels.
[01:04:26] [SPEAKER_01]: It was just photos mostly and captions.
[01:04:29] [SPEAKER_01]: And I thought maybe people might be able to, or be interested in sharing more than just
[01:04:34] [SPEAKER_01]: photos and a few captions, you know?
[01:04:36] [SPEAKER_01]: And so to hear people say that it's, you know, opened up a lot of things for them and
[01:04:41] [SPEAKER_01]: that they've met a lot of people because of the podcast.
[01:04:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Cause I know a lot of people connect when they see like a new episode go up and like,
[01:04:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I wasn't following that person.
[01:04:50] [SPEAKER_01]: And then you see who they're following and, you know, kind of gets people connected a
[01:04:54] [SPEAKER_01]: lot together.
[01:04:55] [SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, it wasn't my intention for all of that to happen.
[01:04:59] [SPEAKER_01]: It's just been like a nice side effect of doing it.
[01:05:02] [SPEAKER_01]: But, uh, thank you.
[01:05:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[01:05:04] [SPEAKER_04]: It's definitely making an impact.
[01:05:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Just the amount of people I've met.
[01:05:07] [SPEAKER_04]: And then like, even just recently I've been to a couple of different weddings for people
[01:05:11] [SPEAKER_04]: that I've connected with through cars.
[01:05:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Nice.
[01:05:14] [SPEAKER_04]: So, yeah.
[01:05:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Awesome.
[01:05:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, here's this last segment, but, uh, get to know you a little bit better, but who
[01:05:20] [SPEAKER_01]: is Derek?
[01:05:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Who is Derek?
[01:05:24] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm a father.
[01:05:25] [SPEAKER_04]: I have two amazing kids.
[01:05:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, an incredible wife.
[01:05:29] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, I've been working with kids for about the last 20 years, been a teacher, um,
[01:05:34] [SPEAKER_04]: more recently I've been an assistant principal.
[01:05:36] [SPEAKER_04]: And then the last three years I've been a principal at an elementary school.
[01:05:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, very nice.
[01:05:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Love, love working with kids.
[01:05:43] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a, it's an incredible field.
[01:05:44] [SPEAKER_04]: If you're someone that enjoys working with kids as much as I do and it's good with people
[01:05:49] [SPEAKER_04]: and, um, yeah, love being outdoors, exploring, trying new things.
[01:05:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:05:56] [SPEAKER_01]: That's good.
[01:05:56] [SPEAKER_01]: So you were, you're in Oregon now, but where were you born?
[01:06:01] [SPEAKER_04]: I was actually born on the East coast, um, in Portsmouth, Virginia.
[01:06:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[01:06:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Dad was in the Coast Guard when I was born and for most of the, my childhood.
[01:06:11] [SPEAKER_04]: So we started there and I think we moved down to Long Beach, California before I was even
[01:06:17] [SPEAKER_04]: one.
[01:06:18] [SPEAKER_04]: So I don't remember anything about it, but it's kind of fun saying that that's where I was
[01:06:23] [SPEAKER_04]: born.
[01:06:23] [SPEAKER_04]: I've never been back to that city, but I'd love to at some point.
[01:06:26] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, we pretty much bounced around up and down the West coast for most of my childhood.
[01:06:32] [SPEAKER_01]: So when did you end up in Oregon?
[01:06:34] [SPEAKER_04]: So we were up here for a little while, like in the mid, I think mid to late eighties.
[01:06:39] [SPEAKER_04]: And then we were back down and Huntington beach, California for a little while.
[01:06:43] [SPEAKER_04]: And then, so I, I think it was my freshman year of high school.
[01:06:47] [SPEAKER_04]: We moved back up here and that was like 90, early nineties.
[01:06:52] [SPEAKER_04]: And we've been up here since then.
[01:06:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:06:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Oregon's beautiful.
[01:06:55] [SPEAKER_01]: I've been to Corvallis and I've been to Eugene and I think that's it.
[01:07:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, and I've been to Portland too.
[01:07:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:07:02] [SPEAKER_01]: So I haven't been able to go explore anywhere in Portland, but I do know that being vegan
[01:07:09] [SPEAKER_01]: and having a project in Portland, I have this app called happy cow and happy cow will
[01:07:15] [SPEAKER_01]: show like all the restaurants that have vegan and vegetarian options, but you can select
[01:07:20] [SPEAKER_01]: like just vegan only.
[01:07:22] [SPEAKER_01]: So it'll bring up vegan only restaurants.
[01:07:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:07:24] [SPEAKER_01]: And when I was in Portland, it had like a really long list of just all vegan restaurants.
[01:07:29] [SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, man, this is awesome.
[01:07:31] [SPEAKER_01]: I love this place.
[01:07:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Got some good food up here.
[01:07:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:07:34] [SPEAKER_01]: So it was, it was nice.
[01:07:35] [SPEAKER_01]: It was nice to be able to have so many different options there, but yeah, it's a, I'd
[01:07:41] [SPEAKER_01]: like to go back up there at some point and just check out more than just the cities.
[01:07:44] [SPEAKER_01]: But I mean, like when we were in Corvallis, that was really pretty.
[01:07:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Cause we, I remember we went to, we went to some, we were like some holiday inn or somewhere
[01:07:54] [SPEAKER_01]: and it was right along the Willamette river and we went out on this deck.
[01:07:59] [SPEAKER_01]: They had this like patio that was like overlooking the river or this smaller part of it and did
[01:08:04] [SPEAKER_01]: some work out there.
[01:08:05] [SPEAKER_01]: And then when we were in Eugene, we had, we were in this big kind of like oval or round
[01:08:12] [SPEAKER_01]: conference room and we were kind of right outside the river and they opened a lot of
[01:08:18] [SPEAKER_01]: the doors cause it was like all glass.
[01:08:20] [SPEAKER_01]: They opened up some of the doors and hear birds chirping and the water and everything.
[01:08:23] [SPEAKER_01]: And that was really nice.
[01:08:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:08:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:08:26] [SPEAKER_01]: So it's beautiful up there.
[01:08:28] [SPEAKER_01]: So what is a favorite memory from your childhood?
[01:08:32] [SPEAKER_04]: We did a lot of camping trips as a kid.
[01:08:35] [SPEAKER_04]: My, my dad was into camping.
[01:08:37] [SPEAKER_04]: His dad would always arrange like, you know, like family get togethers like every other summer.
[01:08:43] [SPEAKER_04]: So we would go to like Yosemite, um, Tahoe, Lassen, Mount Shasta area.
[01:08:50] [SPEAKER_04]: So kind of up and down California for a lot of these camping trips.
[01:08:52] [SPEAKER_04]: And yeah, I just loved being outdoors and, you know, often get together with extended family
[01:08:58] [SPEAKER_04]: for some of these trips too.
[01:08:59] [SPEAKER_04]: So checking out all these amazing places.
[01:09:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:09:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Tahoe.
[01:09:04] [SPEAKER_01]: We go to the Redwoods too.
[01:09:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah.
[01:09:05] [SPEAKER_01]: I want to go see that.
[01:09:06] [SPEAKER_01]: That's nice.
[01:09:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:09:08] [SPEAKER_01]: You have not been to the Redwoods?
[01:09:09] [SPEAKER_01]: No.
[01:09:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Nah, dude.
[01:09:11] [SPEAKER_01]: I know.
[01:09:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:09:12] [SPEAKER_01]: I did take my son out to Tahoe though.
[01:09:13] [SPEAKER_01]: We went out there and went snowboarding and, and then just got a chance to kind of drive
[01:09:17] [SPEAKER_01]: around part of the lake.
[01:09:18] [SPEAKER_01]: And that was really, really beautiful.
[01:09:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:09:20] [SPEAKER_01]: It's nice out there.
[01:09:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[01:09:22] [SPEAKER_01]: So we know what you do for a-
[01:09:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Put that on your, put that on your list, man.
[01:09:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh yeah.
[01:09:25] [SPEAKER_01]: It's, it's been on there.
[01:09:27] [SPEAKER_01]: So I, you know, it's, that, that's one of those things where I would have to, I'd go,
[01:09:31] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd want to go and be able to take my kids and all of us just go out there and
[01:09:35] [SPEAKER_01]: make a trip out of it.
[01:09:36] [SPEAKER_01]: So, so we know what you do for a living, but is that?
[01:09:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Would you say that that is a dream job for you?
[01:09:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Or is there something else like where you're like, I love this, but I would really love
[01:09:49] [SPEAKER_01]: to do this.
[01:09:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[01:09:52] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, being a principal was, was a dream job for a long time.
[01:09:55] [SPEAKER_04]: It still kind of is.
[01:09:55] [SPEAKER_04]: I just, I love working with kids, love working with people.
[01:10:00] [SPEAKER_04]: It's, it's an incredible job as long as you have patience and can be a good listener.
[01:10:05] [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah.
[01:10:07] [SPEAKER_04]: If I wasn't doing that, I would love to figure out a way to do like this hobby of being out
[01:10:12] [SPEAKER_04]: in the outdoors, a full-time gig.
[01:10:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[01:10:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, maybe that'll come to fruition at some point, but it's just, you know, what, what
[01:10:22] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm doing right now.
[01:10:23] [SPEAKER_04]: And just, I don't love social media, but I love all of the, this, the kind of digital
[01:10:29] [SPEAKER_04]: aspects of it, like just being creative and putting things together.
[01:10:32] [SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, it kind of taps into a lot of my, my skills and just that adventure aspect.
[01:10:37] [SPEAKER_04]: It's, it's a lot of fun.
[01:10:39] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, if we're thinking about a dream job, that would, that would most likely be
[01:10:42] [SPEAKER_04]: it.
[01:10:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah.
[01:10:43] [SPEAKER_04]: Not just in Oregon, but if I could do that throughout the United States at some point,
[01:10:47] [SPEAKER_04]: but yeah.
[01:10:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Be fun.
[01:10:49] [SPEAKER_01]: So you mentioned earlier about being introverted.
[01:10:53] [SPEAKER_01]: So how does that work out being a principal and being somebody that's like, you know,
[01:10:57] [SPEAKER_01]: talking to everybody?
[01:10:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[01:11:00] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, teachers know this, like you, you're on a stage pretty much all day when, as a,
[01:11:05] [SPEAKER_04]: as a teacher and you just have to do it.
[01:11:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Some teachers are also really great with adults too, but it's a lot more comfortable being in
[01:11:13] [SPEAKER_04]: a room with kids, I think for a lot of teachers.
[01:11:15] [SPEAKER_04]: And that's kind of where I found myself, but you just kind of have to, to own it.
[01:11:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, you know, most of the time I'm, I am an introvert, but you can't always be that when
[01:11:24] [SPEAKER_04]: you're a principal.
[01:11:25] [SPEAKER_01]: And I think too, that when it's your job to be kind of in front of people and to like talk
[01:11:34] [SPEAKER_01]: to people, it's easier because it's like, that's just what you do.
[01:11:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Cause I, like I said, I'm very shy, but like I used to wait tables at Chili's a long time
[01:11:43] [SPEAKER_01]: ago and, you know, just like pulling up to a table and starting a conversation with somebody,
[01:11:49] [SPEAKER_01]: you know, it's, you, you have to do that.
[01:11:51] [SPEAKER_01]: That's part of what you're, I mean, you don't have to necessarily start a conversation,
[01:11:55] [SPEAKER_01]: but you have to like engage with the people.
[01:11:57] [SPEAKER_01]: So I think when it's something that is part of your job, it makes it a lot easier to be
[01:12:02] [SPEAKER_01]: able to talk to people, but then like, yeah, in other situations, not so much.
[01:12:06] [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, absolutely.
[01:12:08] [SPEAKER_01]: So besides getting out and driving your Subarus and, or at least your Forrester, what other
[01:12:14] [SPEAKER_01]: hobbies do you have?
[01:12:16] [SPEAKER_04]: I've kind of just mentioned my hobby around photography, some hiking, exercising, the hobbies
[01:12:23] [SPEAKER_04]: kind of changed since I've gotten a little bit older.
[01:12:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Like I used to do a lot more like woodworking and things like that.
[01:12:29] [SPEAKER_04]: I like to do stuff with my hands, which also is kind of fun with cars too.
[01:12:33] [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah.
[01:12:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:12:35] [SPEAKER_01]: That, that actually brings me to a question I meant to ask.
[01:12:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Have you done all of your mods yourself?
[01:12:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, I've, I've done most of them.
[01:12:43] [SPEAKER_04]: I did not do the Torque Locker.
[01:12:46] [SPEAKER_04]: I had watched videos and I was like reading the instructions for it.
[01:12:50] [SPEAKER_04]: And I, you know, I feel like if I had enough time and was patient enough, I probably could have
[01:12:54] [SPEAKER_04]: figured it out, but it just seemed like something beyond my skill level at the time.
[01:12:58] [SPEAKER_04]: But, you know, in hindsight, knowing what I know now, I probably would have just done
[01:13:01] [SPEAKER_04]: on my own, but yeah, I'm pretty like, and before I got the Subaru, like I think I had
[01:13:06] [SPEAKER_04]: only done maybe rotating tires or changing the oil, those kinds of things.
[01:13:12] [SPEAKER_04]: But, you know, I did the lift kit my first time, um, changed the springs for the first
[01:13:17] [SPEAKER_04]: time.
[01:13:18] [SPEAKER_04]: I've redone the suspension.
[01:13:20] [SPEAKER_04]: So most of the stuff I've done on my own, but not all of it.
[01:13:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:13:23] [SPEAKER_01]: It's nice when you can do it on your own one, because it's just fun.
[01:13:27] [SPEAKER_01]: It's fun to do it.
[01:13:29] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's, it's also saves you a lot of money and labor.
[01:13:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[01:13:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, it does.
[01:13:34] [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, it's, it's nice, especially when you can sit back and look at it and just go
[01:13:40] [SPEAKER_01]: like, Oh, I did that.
[01:13:41] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I wasn't afraid to do it and I tried it and got it done.
[01:13:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[01:13:46] [SPEAKER_04]: And I think that's why I feel so attached to this car too.
[01:13:48] [SPEAKER_04]: And the reason why I look back at it so many times or take pictures of it so many times
[01:13:53] [SPEAKER_04]: is just knowing how much work and time and heart that I put into it.
[01:13:59] [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah.
[01:14:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:14:00] [SPEAKER_01]: It's a big deal.
[01:14:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Good car.
[01:14:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Yep.
[01:14:02] [SPEAKER_01]: So what is something that makes you want to get out of bed every day?
[01:14:07] [SPEAKER_04]: I have no problem getting out of bed.
[01:14:09] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, coffee's a good motivator, but when I'm up, I'm up.
[01:14:13] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm ready to get going.
[01:14:14] [SPEAKER_04]: It might be three in the morning.
[01:14:15] [SPEAKER_04]: It might be seven in the morning, but when I'm awake, I'm, I'm ready to go.
[01:14:20] [SPEAKER_04]: So it doesn't take much.
[01:14:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:14:21] [SPEAKER_01]: That's the same with me.
[01:14:23] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, once I get up and cause like, I don't, I don't always sleep really well and
[01:14:28] [SPEAKER_01]: I'll get up and I'm like, I try to go back to bed sometimes, try to go back to sleep,
[01:14:33] [SPEAKER_01]: especially like on the weekend, like yesterday morning, this morning, tried to go back to
[01:14:36] [SPEAKER_01]: sleep and it's just, I can't, I'll lay there for a while.
[01:14:40] [SPEAKER_01]: And then I'm like, well, I might as well just get up and get stuff done.
[01:14:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Cause then I've got a lot more time in the day to do the things that I need to do.
[01:14:49] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm the same way.
[01:14:50] [SPEAKER_01]: What is something?
[01:14:51] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm the only person in my family that has like that.
[01:14:53] [SPEAKER_04]: Everybody else is sleeping until nine.
[01:14:55] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, yeah, I've got suspension chains or like rotating tires before something.
[01:14:59] [SPEAKER_04]: They get up and yeah.
[01:15:03] [SPEAKER_01]: My son, like he usually sleeps in pretty late and I wish, like, I wish I could sleep
[01:15:08] [SPEAKER_01]: like that.
[01:15:09] [SPEAKER_01]: And, but like, I was like, oh yeah, I went and got my tires rotated.
[01:15:13] [SPEAKER_01]: I did this.
[01:15:14] [SPEAKER_01]: I did that, you know, before you got up.
[01:15:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
[01:15:18] [SPEAKER_01]: So what is something that makes you want to stay in bed?
[01:15:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Usually I want to stay in bed if it's pretty chilly out.
[01:15:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Um, like we're heading into the fall and nights are getting a lot colder here and, you know,
[01:15:30] [SPEAKER_04]: if it's cold in the morning, the house is cold.
[01:15:31] [SPEAKER_04]: I'd much rather stay in bed, but.
[01:15:33] [SPEAKER_01]: That's always a good reason to stay in bed.
[01:15:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Exactly.
[01:15:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Yep.
[01:15:36] [SPEAKER_01]: What would be your best bit of advice to give to someone about anything?
[01:15:42] [SPEAKER_04]: Uh, I would say learn to listen and I'm going to leave it at that.
[01:15:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[01:15:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:15:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:15:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Cause that's pretty broad, but it's, you know, that's, uh, no, that's good.
[01:15:54] [SPEAKER_04]: No, I just think if we did a better job of listening to people and to each other, that
[01:15:59] [SPEAKER_04]: our communities and our world be much better off.
[01:16:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I agree.
[01:16:05] [SPEAKER_01]: So, well, I, uh, I didn't have any other questions, you know, if there's anything else
[01:16:10] [SPEAKER_01]: that you wanted to share, you can, otherwise, you know, we can close this out.
[01:16:15] [SPEAKER_04]: No, I think that was it.
[01:16:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Appreciate you having me on.
[01:16:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:16:19] [SPEAKER_01]: I appreciate you taking the time on a Sunday and recording.
[01:16:22] [SPEAKER_01]: I know you were out some yesterday and it seems like some this morning, but I'm glad we're
[01:16:26] [SPEAKER_01]: able to make it happen.
[01:16:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I know that you really wanted me to come record in person and, you know, it's just, that's
[01:16:34] [SPEAKER_01]: a little bit harder to do than, you know, but it's a, that definitely would have been
[01:16:38] [SPEAKER_01]: nice, but, uh, you know, made it happen remote and it's nice to be able to do it through
[01:16:42] [SPEAKER_01]: zoom so we can at least see each other.
[01:16:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[01:16:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Yep.
[01:16:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Exactly.
[01:16:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:16:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Some point we'll connect at some point.
[01:16:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:16:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[01:16:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, thank you, Derek.
[01:16:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I hope you enjoy the rest of your Sunday.
[01:16:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Thanks for having me too.
[01:16:55] [SPEAKER_01]: You're welcome.
[01:16:55] [SPEAKER_01]: All right.
[01:16:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Talk to you later.
[01:16:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Bye.
[01:16:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Bye.
[01:16:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Hello again, everybody.
[01:17:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much for tuning in to another episode of the Subi and you podcast.
[01:17:04] [SPEAKER_01]: If you're not doing so, go give Derek a follow.
[01:17:07] [SPEAKER_01]: His Instagram handle is unpaved underscore PNW.
[01:17:11] [SPEAKER_01]: So go check out his build and, uh, let him know what you thought of his episode.
[01:17:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Also right there, kind of towards the end when he talked about, he just gets up and, you
[01:17:23] [SPEAKER_01]: know, whatever time it is in the morning.
[01:17:24] [SPEAKER_01]: And I said, I'd pretty much do the same.
[01:17:27] [SPEAKER_01]: That's what happened this morning.
[01:17:28] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm recording this or finishing up the episode Sunday morning.
[01:17:33] [SPEAKER_01]: I went to sleep pretty late.
[01:17:34] [SPEAKER_01]: I got to sleep around 2.30 ish and I woke up at like 7.45.
[01:17:41] [SPEAKER_01]: So I only got like five hours of sleep and I really wanted to go back to sleep because,
[01:17:50] [SPEAKER_01]: you know, there's just like, I want to sleep.
[01:17:52] [SPEAKER_01]: But then I decided to go ahead and get up so that I can finish this episode, get some
[01:17:58] [SPEAKER_01]: other things done, try to get stuff done before noon so that the rest of the day, I
[01:18:04] [SPEAKER_01]: just have the day off pretty much.
[01:18:06] [SPEAKER_01]: So even though I know I'm going to be tired later on, I'll try to get to bed early tonight
[01:18:10] [SPEAKER_01]: since I have to get to work in the morning.
[01:18:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Although I'm not going to be driving Pearl to work in the morning, I'm going to have to
[01:18:16] [SPEAKER_01]: go drive her to this local shop.
[01:18:19] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't feel as uncomfortable driving to this local shop because it's only a few miles away,
[01:18:25] [SPEAKER_01]: but I definitely don't want to drive too far because like it's a long drive to work.
[01:18:30] [SPEAKER_01]: It usually takes me at least 45 minutes if I take the fast way.
[01:18:34] [SPEAKER_01]: If I take the long way, it's like over a little over an hour.
[01:18:38] [SPEAKER_01]: And I just, you know, if there's something going on that's not that big a deal, then that's
[01:18:43] [SPEAKER_01]: okay.
[01:18:45] [SPEAKER_01]: But if there's something going on that could potentially get worse from driving it more,
[01:18:49] [SPEAKER_01]: I definitely don't want to do that.
[01:18:52] [SPEAKER_01]: So send some positive vibes that it's not that big of a deal and that everything's going
[01:18:57] [SPEAKER_01]: to be okay.
[01:18:58] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's, you know, not going to be crazy expensive to get whatever it is fixed.
[01:19:04] [SPEAKER_01]: So hopefully it's, I mean, I just, I don't think it's that big of a deal, but again, I just don't
[01:19:09] [SPEAKER_01]: want to drive it and take a chance.
[01:19:11] [SPEAKER_01]: So anyway, hope you all have a great week.
[01:19:15] [SPEAKER_01]: We'll see you next Monday on solo episode on the SubiScoop.
[01:19:20] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'll let you know what happened with Pearl and whether or not I was able to make it to
[01:19:23] [SPEAKER_01]: the event at Huffine's Subaru.
[01:19:26] [SPEAKER_01]: So if you've got some around you, get out and hit the trails or just get outdoors and
[01:19:31] [SPEAKER_01]: drive your Subaru because we love these things.
[01:19:34] [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, it's just fun to drive no matter where you are.
