Christopher joins us on this episode to talk about his off-road built Subaru Impreza, some of the places he has taken it, and the people he enjoys going off-road with.

[00:00:10] Hello, this is Christopher and you can find me on Instagram at overland underscore NA. You're listening to episode 190 of Subie & You Podcast.
[00:00:19] Hello everybody, welcome to another episode of the Subie & You Podcast. I hope you have all had a great week and a great weekend.
[00:00:27] As you just heard, we have Christopher on the episode and I think he is one of the youngest guests we've ever had on.
[00:00:36] I don't know that he is the youngest. He could be, I don't know, but this guy is only 17.
[00:00:42] And it's great to see somebody out there his age having a really great build like he has
[00:00:48] and also putting some time into creating something unique and something that appeals to him.
[00:00:55] And of course getting out there and just crushing it on the trails and having so much fun with the car that wasn't really intended to go off-road the way that he's doing it.
[00:01:04] I know that he's also made a lot of friends through or in the community throughout his journey.
[00:01:10] And that's also great to have people that you can get out there with and have fun with and just support you in your journey.
[00:01:17] So we will hear all about that here in just a bit, but first a few announcements.
[00:01:23] The Subie & You Podcast is brought to you by Eccentric Designs.
[00:01:27] For those of you who don't know, Eccentric Designs is a small community-driven business that offers custom fit vinyl overlays for most Subaru models.
[00:01:35] This includes various designs for the rear reflectors, taillights and side taillights.
[00:01:40] I also offer fun decal designs like the popular fender stripes and stickers.
[00:01:44] To find designs for your Subie, head on over to eccentricdesigns.com.
[00:01:49] There's always more projects in the works, so be sure to follow at eccentric.designs on Instagram.
[00:01:55] As always, thank you so much, Eccentric Designs, for sponsoring the Subie & You Podcast.
[00:01:59] Always appreciate it, and be sure to go check out her website and check out her Instagram page.
[00:02:05] Of course, decals are a great way to personalize your Subaru, but another great way to personalize your Subaru and make it different and just do something different is Plasti Dip.
[00:02:16] And that's exactly what my son did Saturday is he'd been wanting to Plasti Dip his grill.
[00:02:23] So we finally took it off, masked off the Subaru emblem and sprayed it, and it turned out looking pretty good.
[00:02:32] So that's kind of one of the way he put some decals on the reflectors in the back, but he hasn't done too much to it just yet.
[00:02:40] There are some more things that he wants to do, but for now he's just kind of keeping it subtle, and we need some fundage to do some of the things that he wants to do.
[00:02:50] So all in due time, but it's looking good so far, and I'm just glad that he's in a Subaru, glad that he has something to drive that is safe, and something that I know will last him a while.
[00:03:03] And something that very much he enjoys, and that's the most important part.
[00:03:08] With the holidays fast approaching and thinking about what you want to get for that Subaru enthusiast in your life, one of the great ways and one of the best ways to do that is to go to SubaruGear.com.
[00:03:20] Right there on the homepage, you will see that they have gift giving made easy.
[00:03:24] You can click on the button and explore the gift ideas and find a perfect gift for that Subaru enthusiast in your life or just a friend or for yourself.
[00:03:36] Go shopping for yourself. It's perfectly okay to do that.
[00:03:38] And there are so many great items to choose from, whether you're looking for a beanie, a hat, a shirt, a hoodie, you're looking for gear for your car, you're looking for outdoor stuff, or a gift for your kids.
[00:03:51] There's plenty to choose from, so go to SubaruGear.com, explore the shop, fill up your cart, and when you've got your cart filled up and you go to checkout, use the code SUBIEANDU24 to get 20% off.
[00:04:05] And if your order is over $50 after the 20% discount, then you automatically get free shipping.
[00:04:14] So it's a great time of year to take advantage of that free shipping and just to select some really great Subaru branded items.
[00:04:24] So thank you so much SubaruGear.com for sponsoring this SUBIEANDU podcast.
[00:04:28] And thank you for bringing this great offer to all of the listeners of the SUBIEANDU podcast.
[00:04:33] I myself have not done any shopping yet, but I actually did get an early Christmas gift for my son and his girlfriend because last year I took my kids to go see A Christmas Carol here at the Alley Theater in Houston.
[00:04:49] And I had been once before many years ago, and I really, really loved it, and I wanted to give that experience to my kids.
[00:04:57] And so we went and we had a great time, and my son was telling me the other day that he wanted to take his girlfriend to see A Christmas Carol.
[00:05:05] So it really means a lot to me that him going to see that last year had an impact on him and that he really, really enjoyed it, and then now he wants to share that experience with his girlfriend.
[00:05:16] So that really means a lot to me, and it's very touching.
[00:05:20] And so I bought him and his girlfriend tickets to go see it in December, like right before Christmas.
[00:05:27] So I think it's a really great early Christmas gift for them, and I know that they're really going to have a good time.
[00:05:34] So get your shopping done, get it done early if you can, and I need to do the same thing.
[00:05:40] So I already have some other things in mind about what I want to do, but now's the time to get it done.
[00:05:46] I know we're just a couple of weeks away, but I wanted to say I hope everybody has a really great Thanksgiving,
[00:05:54] and I hope you get a chance to meet up with friends and family and eat a lot of food and go into a food coma and just have a good time.
[00:06:03] I mean, it's really about spending time with friends and family and just, you know, enjoying the company,
[00:06:10] because that's the thing that I always enjoy about Thanksgiving.
[00:06:13] And for the first time in my life, this Thanksgiving is going to be very, very different,
[00:06:18] because on Thanksgiving Day, me and my kids are going to be at Universal Studios in Orlando,
[00:06:26] because we wanted to plan a trip over the Thanksgiving break to go to Disney World and the Universal Studios.
[00:06:34] And so me and my daughter were saving up for a really long time to buy the tickets,
[00:06:39] and so that was our big plan, is we're going to be gone the whole week,
[00:06:44] but on Thanksgiving Day, we're going to be in Universal Studios.
[00:06:47] So really, really, really looking forward to that, because I've never been to Universal Studios,
[00:06:51] and I haven't been to Disney World since my daughter was five years old, and my son has never been.
[00:06:58] So I've been wanting to take him for a really long time,
[00:07:01] and I'm glad he's at an age now that he can really, really appreciate it and really enjoy it and remember it.
[00:07:07] And with that being said, next Monday is going to be a Monday where I would put out a Subie Scoop,
[00:07:14] but I'm going to be gone, so I'm going to take the week off and enjoy that week with my family.
[00:07:20] So with that being said, let's go ahead and get into this episode with Christopher,
[00:07:24] aka Overland underscore NA, and hear all about his Subaru journey.
[00:07:35] Hey, welcome to the episode. Christopher, how's it going?
[00:07:40] Good, how are you?
[00:07:41] How are you?
[00:07:41] I'm doing good. It's nice to get you on here.
[00:07:44] I don't remember who it was, but somebody messaged me and said,
[00:07:48] hey, you should have him on.
[00:07:49] It'd be really cool to get him on and have him talk about his build.
[00:07:53] So that's when I reached out to you and said that somebody recommended you.
[00:07:57] So glad we're here.
[00:07:59] For sure, yeah.
[00:08:00] I don't know who recommended me, but it would be cool to know who did.
[00:08:03] I'll try to see if I can find out, but if not, that's cool.
[00:08:06] So, but before we get started with everything else, you know, the most important question,
[00:08:11] and that is whether you prefer waffles or pancakes.
[00:08:14] I am a pancake person.
[00:08:17] Yes.
[00:08:17] From as early as I could remember, my grandma would always make the best pancakes,
[00:08:22] and I just never ate waffles after that.
[00:08:25] So you still have no waffles since then, huh?
[00:08:28] Nope.
[00:08:28] I always, if I want pancakes, I'll make them myself.
[00:08:31] I just don't eat waffles usually.
[00:08:32] Nice.
[00:08:33] Nice.
[00:08:33] You hear that waffle people?
[00:08:36] Yeah, I'm definitely a pancake guy.
[00:08:39] So what's the meaning?
[00:08:40] I mean, obviously Overland and then NA, but like, what's the meaning behind the name of your account?
[00:08:48] And like, where did you come up with that?
[00:08:50] Yeah.
[00:08:51] So I know I wanted to incorporate the Overland part into my name somehow,
[00:08:56] because that's more like the off-road kind of, you know,
[00:08:59] that's one of the standard things when you have an off-road account.
[00:09:01] Yeah.
[00:09:02] But everything I tried was taken.
[00:09:04] So I was like, what do I do?
[00:09:06] And the base model in Preza, because mine's not a WRX and it's not an STI, it's just a base.
[00:09:14] Everybody calls it the NA model.
[00:09:16] So that's where I got the Overland and NA, because it's just a base model of Preza.
[00:09:20] Okay.
[00:09:21] So I did Overland and NA.
[00:09:22] Nice.
[00:09:23] It doesn't look like a base model anymore.
[00:09:25] No, it does not.
[00:09:27] So when you, like, is this your first Subaru?
[00:09:31] Yeah, this is my first Subaru.
[00:09:32] It's actually my first car overall also.
[00:09:35] Oh, nice.
[00:09:35] What a great first car too.
[00:09:37] For sure.
[00:09:38] So what did you, like, where did you, or where did your interest in Subaru come from?
[00:09:44] And like, why did you decide on an Impreza?
[00:09:48] So the interest for Subaru didn't come around until I actually owned the car.
[00:09:53] Because when I was looking at cars, I was going to buy a Toyota,
[00:09:57] probably like a 4Runner Tacoma or something bigger,
[00:09:59] because I know I wanted to go off-roading.
[00:10:01] But I ended up finding the Impreza for $1,000 on Facebook.
[00:10:06] And I was like, I can't pass that up.
[00:10:09] So I had to buy it.
[00:10:11] Now, what kind of condition was it in for $1,000?
[00:10:15] It was, it needed to work.
[00:10:17] The suspension pretty much needed to be redone.
[00:10:20] Shortly after buying your $5,000, the engine blew out of the head gasket.
[00:10:25] They didn't take very good care of that.
[00:10:26] But after I read it, all the suspension and the engine,
[00:10:31] it was literally a brand new car overall, which was really nice.
[00:10:34] Yeah.
[00:10:35] So, you know, you said that you were originally looking at like a Tacoma or a 4Runner
[00:10:40] because you knew you wanted to go off-road.
[00:10:42] So when you saw the Impreza, like, were you thinking,
[00:10:46] okay, I'm going to take this off-road?
[00:10:48] Or were you just like, oh, this is a car, I need a car?
[00:10:52] No.
[00:10:52] So actually, at first, I probably had it, you know, in stock form for about one to two months.
[00:10:58] And I knew a couple people with like lower WRXs and stuff.
[00:11:01] And I was like, I want to do that.
[00:11:03] So I ended up actually lowering my car on coilovers.
[00:11:07] I had bigger wheels on it.
[00:11:09] I had plans to do like a big wing on the back and all sorts of stuff.
[00:11:13] But it just like when I went to all the meets and everything like that
[00:11:17] with the lowered version of my car,
[00:11:19] there's something didn't feel right overall.
[00:11:21] Like, it just didn't feel right having it lowered because it wasn't like a WRX or anything.
[00:11:27] So after that point, I found a couple people who had lifted theirs
[00:11:31] and I just took inspiration and started off as an off-road build.
[00:11:36] So how long did it take you to get to getting it, I guess, off-road ready
[00:11:41] from when you decided to do that?
[00:11:44] So I've owned the car for two years.
[00:11:47] I probably had it from the lowered stage to now where I have it fully lifted, probably about a year.
[00:11:53] Okay. Now, scrolling through your Instagram page,
[00:11:59] I feel like it's very safe to say that you went the correct route in lifting it
[00:12:04] because it looks like you were having a lot of fun and getting out with a lot of people
[00:12:09] and that you're really enjoying it.
[00:12:11] So I'm guessing that like when you...
[00:12:14] So what was your first experience like taking it off-road?
[00:12:18] You know, because you said that when you had it lowered,
[00:12:20] you just kind of felt like you didn't fit in.
[00:12:23] So when you first took it off-road, what was that experience like?
[00:12:26] That was...
[00:12:27] So that...
[00:12:29] I took it off-road the first time shortly after I put a two-inch lift
[00:12:32] and the tires were like slightly bigger than stock.
[00:12:36] I met a couple of guys with lifted Crosstreks.
[00:12:41] They were...
[00:12:42] I don't know if they were serious or not, but they were like,
[00:12:45] yo, let's go off-road because I wasn't really like fully built.
[00:12:47] I don't think they were like trying to show me up or whatever.
[00:12:49] I don't know.
[00:12:50] I mean, no, they're like great.
[00:12:51] They're like good friends now, obviously.
[00:12:54] But we went out.
[00:12:55] It was a three-day weekend trip.
[00:12:57] And it was...
[00:12:58] The thing did way better than I expected.
[00:13:01] Like I probably had five inches of ground clearance.
[00:13:02] And I was doing...
[00:13:03] We were keeping up with these stock Broncos
[00:13:06] and all sorts of stuff on the trail.
[00:13:08] And that was really fun.
[00:13:10] Just seeing like in a stock state what it can do.
[00:13:13] But that really gave me the feeling that after that first trip,
[00:13:16] I was like, I have to do this.
[00:13:18] Like I have to do the trails.
[00:13:19] I got to lift it more, you know?
[00:13:21] Yeah.
[00:13:22] So now what is your ground clearance?
[00:13:25] So right now I'm sitting at 12 and a half in the back and 12 in the front.
[00:13:31] Very nice.
[00:13:32] Yeah, that's pretty good.
[00:13:33] Yeah.
[00:13:34] Because I know like my Crosstrek stock is like 8.7 or something.
[00:13:39] And I have wheels and tires, but I don't have a lift.
[00:13:42] So with my wheels and tires, it might be a tiny bit more.
[00:13:46] But for you to be at least, you know, at 12, that's really good.
[00:13:49] Yeah.
[00:13:50] I would say the only thing that brings me under, I mean, I'd probably be at 13 and a half,
[00:13:54] but I do have the skid plates on the front and the back.
[00:13:57] They bring the ground clearance under a little bit, but it's worth it because I've smacked some pretty big rocks.
[00:14:03] Yeah.
[00:14:03] Yeah.
[00:14:04] Those are definitely a must if you're going off road because you don't, you know,
[00:14:08] it's nice just having that peace of mind with the skid plates because not that it's like you like,
[00:14:14] oh, I want to go absolutely crazy, but you don't want to get in a situation where it's like you're going somewhere
[00:14:20] and then maybe something happens to where, you know, you just take the wrong line just a little bit
[00:14:26] and then you smack a rock and you don't have a skid plate.
[00:14:29] It just gives you that extra comfort and peace of mind to like, hey, I should be pretty good with most situations.
[00:14:36] Yeah.
[00:14:36] And that actually, not too long ago, I was on a trip.
[00:14:39] Like before I lifted it as high as I am now, there was a pretty big rock in the center of the trail.
[00:14:45] So I decided to swerve over to the side a little bit and a little bit.
[00:14:48] I know there's one that was double the size and it smacked my diff skid plate so hard.
[00:14:52] It busted it and then it put a huge dent in the gas tank and the trunk.
[00:14:57] Oh my gosh.
[00:14:59] Without that skid plate, I think my diff would have just been done.
[00:15:02] Yeah.
[00:15:03] Yeah.
[00:15:03] That's man.
[00:15:04] Yeah.
[00:15:05] You never know what you're going to come up against on the trails.
[00:15:08] So it's better to have that protection.
[00:15:11] So like when you lifted it, you know, being that it's an Impreza, did you get flack from people?
[00:15:18] Like, what are you doing lifting an Impreza?
[00:15:20] You know, like, cause I know some people kind of get, you know, people give them a hard time for doing something like that.
[00:15:27] Every time I take it to a Subaru, people just love the car.
[00:15:30] Or it's not Subaru people who give me crap.
[00:15:34] It's actually like, I, it's funny cause I call them like pavement princesses.
[00:15:39] Like all the cars with like the chromed out suspension and everything.
[00:15:42] Every time they see my car, they like to give me crap about it.
[00:15:46] But I can, you know, I can tell that somebody's never taken something off road or whatever.
[00:15:51] And I'm like, yeah, whatever.
[00:15:52] Like I take it out all the time.
[00:15:54] So I don't really care, you know, what they can say, whatever they want.
[00:15:58] But I do get some, but it's mainly from like the big four by fours and stuff.
[00:16:02] Yeah.
[00:16:02] I think, you know, any off road Subaru is pretty much going to get flack from Jeeps and other, you know, those other companies.
[00:16:12] Cause I've seen it.
[00:16:13] I've been out there when we were out at a, and before SubiFest, California, a lot of us were, they were, I think it was a mountain Subi and Judy, the Subi.
[00:16:24] And I can't remember exactly who else was with us and they kept trying to like climb up these hills.
[00:16:28] And it was just really steep.
[00:16:29] And with no like low, you know, gear range, it's harder.
[00:16:34] And there was these like girls down at the bottom that were driving Jeeps, talking a bunch of crap.
[00:16:39] Yeah.
[00:16:39] What are they doing?
[00:16:40] Why are they trying to go up there?
[00:16:41] They should just have a Jeep or something.
[00:16:42] And one of the guys, I think it was Anthony, Judy, the Subi, I think he was still down there and he was like, man, these girls are down here talking all kinds of smack.
[00:16:51] It's like, it's ridiculous.
[00:16:53] But, uh, yeah, we, you know, these cars are fun.
[00:16:56] They're way more capable.
[00:16:58] Like you said, when you first took it off road and you found out it was way more capable than you expected.
[00:17:03] And then you thought that's a lot of people find that.
[00:17:06] And it's like, so then it's like, okay, now it's on, let's do it.
[00:17:11] Yeah.
[00:17:11] I mean that the one thing that surprised me about my car being an Impreza, you know, it was never made to go off road, like the bigger versions of it, like the Crosstrek and Forster outback.
[00:17:22] But for some reason, it just does so good.
[00:17:25] Like when I'm going slow and crawling up stuff, it's so good at that.
[00:17:29] I mean, I never, I would have never anticipated how good it actually was at crawling over stuff, but it's just amazing.
[00:17:35] Yeah, that's good.
[00:17:36] Cause it's sometimes it's not as easy to do the slower, you know, crawling like that.
[00:17:41] But so what was the first thing that you did whenever you went from being lowered to lifted?
[00:17:49] The, well, I have the very first thing I did.
[00:17:53] I don't know if it really counts as like a mod, but on the back of my generation Impreza, there is a huge, we call it the chrome mustache.
[00:18:01] It's just a giant reflective piece of chrome.
[00:18:04] And it's literally the ugliest thing I had on the car.
[00:18:06] I went to AutoZone and bought some like, like carbon fiber wrap and I wrapped it that same day, but that doesn't really count as a mod, but that was really the first thing that I did overall.
[00:18:19] Nice.
[00:18:20] Yeah.
[00:18:21] So then like, uh, was it when you lifted it or when you started going off road, was it like the suspension first and then wheels and tires as you do kind of all of that at the same time?
[00:18:32] It was kind of one after another.
[00:18:34] So first thing I did was like roof racks up.
[00:18:38] I had crossbars in a roof basket.
[00:18:40] And then right after that, I did a two inch lift and wheels and tires, but the two inch lift actually didn't do anything because my struts were really destroyed and broken.
[00:18:52] So that was, it was kind of funny because I had a two inch lift, but I was saying hi to stock, but I didn't realize that until later on.
[00:19:00] So it was kind of funny doing trails as a stock height in Fresno.
[00:19:03] Yeah.
[00:19:04] So I see too, that you have a rooftop tent on it now and how, how long have you had that on there?
[00:19:10] And is it something that you keep on most of the time or is it just like for certain seasons?
[00:19:16] So the rooftop tent, I've probably had that one on there for about, I would say five months now.
[00:19:24] Um, I keep everything on the car all year rounds.
[00:19:29] Uh, just cause if I wanted to go out, I have everything at the awning, the shower, the rooftop tent, it's already on there.
[00:19:36] So, cause a lot of my buddies, they just like to go out on like, let's go next weekend.
[00:19:41] So instead of having to throw it all on, I just keep it all year round.
[00:19:45] Yeah.
[00:19:45] And that makes it easy to just, you know, get in your car and go.
[00:19:48] So, but how often, like when you're going out, you see, you mentioned the shower and the awning and obviously you've got the rooftop tent, but are you usually going out for like a couple of days or, or is it just like day trails?
[00:20:02] And then like, how often do you use your tent?
[00:20:06] So I would love to do multi-day, multi-day trails.
[00:20:10] It's not really realistic all the time.
[00:20:11] So I will usually go out for, usually I get like two off days in a row.
[00:20:15] So I'll go out one day off road and then just camp that night and go back.
[00:20:19] So I use it.
[00:20:21] I use the rooftop tent probably at least once a month.
[00:20:25] Oh, that's good.
[00:20:26] Yeah.
[00:20:27] You do get some good use out of it.
[00:20:28] How is the shower set up?
[00:20:30] Does that work pretty well?
[00:20:32] The shower set up works pretty well.
[00:20:34] It's the Iron Man, got the Iron Man 4x4 broom kind of folds out.
[00:20:38] I use that.
[00:20:39] I don't use it very often.
[00:20:41] I'm not out long enough to really use it, but I'll probably, I'll use it for like changing or whatever if I'm in a public place.
[00:20:48] So.
[00:20:49] Yeah, definitely good to have it for that.
[00:20:51] Have you actually used the shower though?
[00:20:54] Not yet.
[00:20:55] I do have a shower.
[00:20:58] I have, it's called a rinse.
[00:21:00] I don't know the name of it, but it's called like, it's a box.
[00:21:02] And it has a pump inside and got a shower and everything.
[00:21:05] If I'm usually out, I'll just take a shower.
[00:21:07] I don't usually use the room because there's no one around.
[00:21:09] But if there's people around, I will use it.
[00:21:11] Okay.
[00:21:12] Gotcha.
[00:21:12] Yeah.
[00:21:13] So like whenever you started, you know, with the mods and everything and started going off road more, how did you, did you, were you mostly connecting with people through Instagram or were you like meeting people at meetups?
[00:21:26] How did you kind of start getting connected with people?
[00:21:29] So actually all the people that I go out with now, I have met in person.
[00:21:34] Nice.
[00:21:35] So the first person I ever met was Tech Trek Adventures on Instagram.
[00:21:43] And he, I, I met him at a Subaru meets.
[00:21:46] And then after that, he invited other guys to our off-road events.
[00:21:53] And I've just been meeting people solely there.
[00:21:55] You know, I want to get into like asking people on Instagram to go out because there's a ton of people in this area.
[00:22:00] I just haven't gotten to that, you know?
[00:22:02] Yeah.
[00:22:02] Okay.
[00:22:03] Yeah.
[00:22:03] So when you do go out, are you almost primarily going out with other people or do you do any solo, you know, hitting the trails and exploring?
[00:22:14] It's a mix because sometimes I'll go out by myself and just do a trail with me and my dog or whatever.
[00:22:20] And then other times we'll get the whole group together and we'll go out.
[00:22:24] It basically depends on what trail or how far we're going.
[00:22:27] Okay.
[00:22:29] Where, uh, I know you've been to like some other states.
[00:22:32] So what other states have you been to going off-roading?
[00:22:36] Uh, off-roading.
[00:22:38] I've only been to two other states besides California.
[00:22:41] I did a couple of trips to Nevada.
[00:22:45] Those ones are definitely the most fun.
[00:22:47] Uh, I do have stories about Nevada, which is funny.
[00:22:49] Okay.
[00:22:50] Yeah.
[00:22:50] The other, the other place that I have been is Oregon.
[00:22:53] That one, I like, I stepped my foot in like water, like right on the border, but then I didn't really get to stay there very long.
[00:22:58] Okay.
[00:23:00] So what's your funny stories with Nevada?
[00:23:05] So the first one I got to, so the first one is actually kind of funny.
[00:23:09] So I went out there by myself for a one day trip.
[00:23:12] I didn't have the roof.
[00:23:14] This was before I had the rooftop tent and the huge tires.
[00:23:16] And there was a trail.
[00:23:18] It said it was a level one to a level two, which is pretty basic.
[00:23:21] You know, I'm not expecting much.
[00:23:24] So I'm going down this trail starting to get pretty challenging, like bigger rocks and stuff.
[00:23:29] So I'm making it.
[00:23:30] And then I get to the point, like halfway down the trail where if I turn around, it's an hour back.
[00:23:36] If I keep going, it's an hour forward.
[00:23:38] So I'm, there's literally rocks probably like this big all over the whole trail.
[00:23:44] And that's more ground, more than the ground clearance I have.
[00:23:47] So I'm going back and forth, weaving side to side on this trail.
[00:23:51] It was only supposed to take me an hour, but I was there for seven hours doing this one part of the trails.
[00:23:58] So, wow.
[00:23:59] And then right at the end, I was so close to getting my way home.
[00:24:03] There's just this mud pit.
[00:24:04] And I'm like, what am I supposed to do?
[00:24:06] I can't turn around.
[00:24:09] So I said, I said, screw it.
[00:24:11] I just went for it.
[00:24:11] And I somehow made it through the other side.
[00:24:14] And that was a fun, because I was like, I can't turn around, but I just got to keep going.
[00:24:19] Was it pretty deep?
[00:24:21] When I got out, I sunk to about my ankle in it.
[00:24:26] But, you know, it's, you can't really tell because the car is heavier than you.
[00:24:31] Yeah.
[00:24:31] And it's taking different lines.
[00:24:33] So I thought I was going to bog out, but I somehow made it through the other side.
[00:24:38] I mean, I guess I had enough speed.
[00:24:39] Yeah.
[00:24:40] No, that's good.
[00:24:40] Yeah.
[00:24:40] I mean, that's, that's one of those situations where it's kind of dangerous to be going by yourself.
[00:24:45] But it seems like, you know, you didn't know when you got out there what you were going to get into.
[00:24:50] And so, but it's good you made it through.
[00:24:52] Yeah.
[00:24:53] No, because if I go by myself, I'm always looking at trail ratings or asking people if they've done that same trail.
[00:24:58] And it was the level one.
[00:24:59] So I'm like, oh, it's going to be nothing.
[00:25:01] Yeah.
[00:25:02] It was definitely something more than I anticipated.
[00:25:05] Yeah.
[00:25:05] So what's your other story?
[00:25:07] So the other one is kind of funny.
[00:25:10] Also, I just did a trip with, it was probably two months ago or so with a whole crew of guys.
[00:25:16] So we went out to Nevada and it's, it got pretty cold.
[00:25:19] So we parked in this little Canyon area and it was definitely getting really cold.
[00:25:25] It started to rain.
[00:25:26] So I don't know if you've seen on my Instagram, I have this awning room that attaches to my awning from Ironman 4x4.
[00:25:33] And we decided it was a good idea to cook our food inside there.
[00:25:40] That didn't end very well because it caught the side of it on fire.
[00:25:45] And I had to use the fire extinguisher in there, but the only problem was that was where I was going to sleep.
[00:25:51] So I had to sleep in the front seat of the car for the rest of the trip, which was kind of fun.
[00:25:55] And how, how long were y'all out?
[00:25:58] That was a three day trip.
[00:26:01] Um, that happened on the second day.
[00:26:03] Okay.
[00:26:04] I was going to say, was this the first night that this happened?
[00:26:08] Luckily not.
[00:26:09] Second night.
[00:26:10] Well, that's good.
[00:26:11] Well, I mean, at least you had your front seat available.
[00:26:13] I'm sure it probably wasn't too comfortable, but you know, what are you going to do?
[00:26:18] Uh, yeah, you can't do much.
[00:26:21] Not cook in there anymore.
[00:26:23] Oh yeah.
[00:26:23] I learned that lesson for sure.
[00:26:25] Yeah.
[00:26:26] So, uh, going back to your mods, what mod would you say is, is your favorite?
[00:26:32] My favorite.
[00:26:34] I gotta say I have two favorites.
[00:26:35] The first one is going to be the rooftop tent just because I know some people don't really like rooftop tents that much, but I love it because of how much I go out.
[00:26:44] It just makes life so easy when I'm out there setting it up.
[00:26:48] It takes like two seconds, you know, pop it right open with the ladder.
[00:26:50] But the second one is going to be my rear bumper because I had a guy I know custom make that.
[00:26:57] And that is definitely the most useful because of the high clearance and what I keep on that rear bumper.
[00:27:03] Now, do you have a picture of that on Instagram yet?
[00:27:07] The rear bumper?
[00:27:08] I do have some.
[00:27:11] I think they're kind of scattered around.
[00:27:13] Okay.
[00:27:13] Like not one exactly.
[00:27:15] And maybe like in some pictures you can kind of see the back end, I guess.
[00:27:18] Now, is it like a, like a full bumper or is it, because I was looking earlier, because you, you, I saw you were, you were selling your other or your trailer hitch and, uh, or your swing out and, or fold down.
[00:27:33] And because you were getting, um, the rear bumper, but I couldn't really see it.
[00:27:38] Yeah.
[00:27:39] So that one, it's, it's a full rear bumper.
[00:27:42] It wraps all the way around the rear.
[00:27:44] And then it has a tire swing with two gas cans and a tire on it.
[00:27:49] Oh, okay.
[00:27:50] I think I see it here now.
[00:27:51] There's a video.
[00:27:52] I see the two gas cans, but yeah, that's pretty cool.
[00:27:55] So, and, uh, so yeah, I can see how that would be very useful.
[00:28:01] What else?
[00:28:01] I mean, is there anything else on it besides just the two gas cans and the tire?
[00:28:05] Cause I know like some of them have like a fold down table and you know, some other stuff, but.
[00:28:10] I want to do a fold down table on there.
[00:28:12] The only thing that's on it that doesn't get used too often is I have a full size flag mount.
[00:28:17] So I can stick my, I have a six and a half foot flag pole with an American flag.
[00:28:21] I can stick that on there and then screw it tight.
[00:28:24] So that doesn't move around at all.
[00:28:26] That's, that's kind of hidden.
[00:28:27] You can't really see that one.
[00:28:29] Okay.
[00:28:31] Now with all the mods that you've done and have you, did you do all the work yourself or did you have like friends help you?
[00:28:38] Or did you have to take it to a shop?
[00:28:40] I have done everything on the car myself, except if it's like a mechanical issue that I can't figure out.
[00:28:47] But all mod things like lift wheels and tires, roof rack setup, front rear bumpers, everything had been installed myself.
[00:28:55] I did the snorkel.
[00:28:57] All that one was definitely pretty fun because I've never done anything like that.
[00:29:01] Yeah.
[00:29:01] But it's, I install everything myself because I like getting the experience.
[00:29:06] Yeah.
[00:29:06] I mean, there's, there's also a satisfaction of just doing it yourself and then looking at it afterwards and being like, oh, I did that.
[00:29:14] But, but it also saves you a ton of money if you don't have to take it to a shop, you know, having a shop do it and having all the labor added on.
[00:29:23] That's just, it's crazy.
[00:29:24] If you can do it yourself, it's definitely worth it.
[00:29:27] That's actually the main reason I started doing stuff myself was because in the beginning they were going to charge me.
[00:29:34] I don't even remember, but it was way too much to install my lift kit.
[00:29:37] And I'm like, you know what?
[00:29:39] I'll just figure it out myself because I don't want to pay that kind of money.
[00:29:42] And I mean, I started from there just kind of doing everything myself.
[00:29:45] Have you had any issues with anything like your lift or suspension or anything?
[00:29:51] I have had no issues with anything except one part, which is, I think it's called the adjustable toe arms in the back.
[00:30:00] Okay.
[00:30:01] I made, I made the mistake of buying cheap eBay ones and they squeak all the time.
[00:30:06] So I do have to fix those.
[00:30:08] Gotcha.
[00:30:08] Yeah.
[00:30:09] Yeah.
[00:30:10] That's one of those things, you know, if it's working for now, it's cool and you can always replace it later.
[00:30:14] And since you know how to do most of the stuff, you know, it should be pretty easy swap out.
[00:30:19] Yeah, sure.
[00:30:21] So with all the different trails that you've been on, you know, all the places that you go, do you have, I know you said that Nevada was your favorite, but like, is there like an actual trail that's been your favorite?
[00:30:33] Not exactly.
[00:30:34] Because my favorite trail, I actually put together myself and created.
[00:30:40] Really?
[00:30:41] So there's a trek through the Nevada desert.
[00:30:46] It kind of goes around pyramid Lake and then up by the, I don't remember the name of it.
[00:30:55] It's the, uh, the black rock desert right there.
[00:30:58] And just kind of wraps around that one is 150 miles of off road that I put together myself, which was probably the most fun.
[00:31:07] And that one is my favorite trip.
[00:31:09] But just, we found like there was three intact abandoned cabins.
[00:31:13] There was a bunch of open mines, abandoned cars.
[00:31:17] There was an abandoned town.
[00:31:19] There was, uh, a spring that was open, a nice hot spring.
[00:31:23] There was a native American building, which is pretty cool.
[00:31:27] And a bunch of other stuff, which I was like for a trail, put together myself, we had so much fun exploring everything.
[00:31:33] Yeah.
[00:31:33] And it sounds like you came across so many different things and that's, what's cool about getting out and exploring like that is coming across stuff that you wouldn't really expect to see.
[00:31:43] Has there been like something like just crazy that you've come across?
[00:31:48] Yeah.
[00:31:49] Yeah.
[00:31:49] I mean, I would say, so when we were out on that trip, there was, we had passed a couple of cabins and we're in like this ravine gorge area, like where the mountains go down and it's flat right in the middle.
[00:32:03] And mind you, it's in the middle of the desert.
[00:32:04] So there's no trees anywhere around.
[00:32:06] It's just these hills of like the grass all over them.
[00:32:09] And right in the middle, for some reason, there's a fire pit right in the middle.
[00:32:14] Like we're in the middle of nowhere.
[00:32:15] There's a fire pit and 10 perfectly placed trees in a circle around the fire pit in the middle of nowhere.
[00:32:22] And it was so cool because it's like, you would never expect this perfect camp spot.
[00:32:27] And we camped there, but it was amazing.
[00:32:29] Like we found this perfect camp spot.
[00:32:31] That was pretty cool.
[00:32:32] Yeah.
[00:32:32] It'd be interesting to see that too.
[00:32:34] Like the way that you described it, it's not something you would expect to come across.
[00:32:39] No.
[00:32:40] Yeah.
[00:32:40] We turned the corner and there's just 10 trees and a fire pit right in the middle.
[00:32:44] And there's nothing around for probably 50 miles in every direction.
[00:32:48] Yeah.
[00:32:48] That's weird.
[00:32:49] That's cool.
[00:32:49] Yeah.
[00:32:50] It was nice to find that, like you said.
[00:32:51] But did you, so I know that you said that you went on that one trail that was supposed
[00:32:56] to take like an hour and it took you like seven hours.
[00:32:59] Would you say that's been the most challenging trail so far?
[00:33:02] I would say, yeah, right now I would say that's probably been the most challenging.
[00:33:07] I want to get something more challenging.
[00:33:10] I think now with the state my car's in, it really wouldn't be that challenging, but it's
[00:33:14] just challenging to me back then when I didn't have anything.
[00:33:17] Yeah.
[00:33:18] And have you ever gotten stuck in snow or mud?
[00:33:22] I have.
[00:33:24] Oh, I have some really fun stories about getting stuck.
[00:33:27] I saw one on your Instagram where you were stuck and there's like a video and there was
[00:33:34] somebody else that was about to get you out and there was a recovery board right in front
[00:33:38] of your like passenger front tire.
[00:33:40] Is that one-on-one that you're going to tell?
[00:33:43] That, I will tell that one, but that's actually one of four stories.
[00:33:48] And so that one, that one is actually really funny.
[00:33:51] It's funny that you mentioned that one.
[00:33:53] I had just gotten off work and it was raining for probably about two weeks and I decided let's
[00:33:59] go through this random field in the middle of the city.
[00:34:01] That was not fun because the round was fully muddy and I just sunk in.
[00:34:07] I called my buddy who works right down the way.
[00:34:10] He has the blue cross track.
[00:34:12] You see in the videos and he-
[00:34:13] Now were you out by yourself again?
[00:34:16] Now I was in the middle of the city, so I wasn't even off road.
[00:34:20] Okay.
[00:34:21] You were just in this field.
[00:34:23] Yeah.
[00:34:24] There's an open field in the middle of my city and I decided it was a guy to drive through
[00:34:28] it and it wasn't a good idea.
[00:34:33] So he comes out and helps you get out?
[00:34:36] He came in, he got stuck and then we had to call a Toyota to come pull us both out,
[00:34:42] which is kind of funny and ironic.
[00:34:43] Yeah.
[00:34:44] Yeah, we're getting pulled out by a Toyota.
[00:34:47] Oops.
[00:34:48] The guy was definitely happy that his Toyota saved both of us.
[00:34:52] Yeah, that's cool.
[00:34:54] So what are some other stories of getting stuck?
[00:34:56] So the second one also has to do with mud.
[00:35:01] So we were coming back from a two, I believe it was the three-day trip from the mountains
[00:35:07] and there is this one trail, like let's hit this last trail on the way home.
[00:35:11] And obviously it's been dry for a long time, but there's still like mud puddles around the
[00:35:16] area.
[00:35:18] So I was driving around with the crew and we see this one, like it's just a big water puddle.
[00:35:25] So we get out.
[00:35:26] I stick a pole in there and I'm like, it's not too deep.
[00:35:29] I might maybe give it a try.
[00:35:31] And my buddy's just like, if you go in there, I'll pull you out.
[00:35:34] And I was like, all right.
[00:35:35] So I give it a try and I get water all the way up to my mirrors.
[00:35:39] Oh my God.
[00:35:41] And it was, it was really bad because the engine died and I had to get pulled out by
[00:35:45] the other guy.
[00:35:46] And we sat there for like an hour trying to start the car back up.
[00:35:50] So that was fun getting it home, but luckily no issues after that.
[00:35:54] So did you, I guess you eventually got it started.
[00:35:57] We got it started about an hour later.
[00:35:59] And then about two weeks after that happened, that's when I installed the snorkel.
[00:36:03] So nothing like that happens again.
[00:36:05] Yeah, there you go.
[00:36:06] Have you ever gotten stuck in snow?
[00:36:09] I have, I've gotten stuck.
[00:36:11] So this one, I was by myself.
[00:36:14] So I was going up, I don't know if you ever heard of Bowman Lake.
[00:36:17] It's up here.
[00:36:19] So there's a lake up near Lake Tahoe up in the, uh, the hills or the mountains up here.
[00:36:26] And there's, it's concrete or road for a couple of miles.
[00:36:31] And then it turns to dirt.
[00:36:32] So they have plowed to where it turns to dirt and the snow was packed.
[00:36:38] Cause it was like early in the morning, like five, 6 AM.
[00:36:41] So I drive on the snow and it started getting deeper and deeper.
[00:36:45] So at that point I just turned around and on the way back, it was probably about eight o'clock.
[00:36:50] And I just split off the road into the ditch because it had gotten all slushy.
[00:36:56] So that was a fun one.
[00:36:58] Um, I had to convince a PG and E employee to pull me out because they had the snow cats,
[00:37:06] the expensive ones out there.
[00:37:07] And they didn't, he didn't want, not want to, cause he's like, I could get in trouble,
[00:37:11] but he did not too.
[00:37:12] I finally convinced him and he pulled me out of that one.
[00:37:14] And in that exact same trip, the next day I got stuck in the sand.
[00:37:18] Oh my gosh.
[00:37:21] Not by yourself.
[00:37:23] By myself.
[00:37:24] So it was a trip.
[00:37:25] Okay.
[00:37:26] Gotcha.
[00:37:26] So I had another place that I went up and camped for the night cause I had been there for so long.
[00:37:32] I was tired.
[00:37:33] I just wanted to find a place to camp.
[00:37:35] So after that, I crossed over into the Nevada desert and there's like, it turns, it's like two
[00:37:42] hills.
[00:37:42] So the trail goes up a slight hill and then down the other side.
[00:37:46] But the thing is where it goes up, there's apparently about a five foot deep Creek bed
[00:37:53] as you could, you can't see it cause you're going up the hill, but right as you crest,
[00:37:57] it just goes down into a Creek bed and you can't see that at all.
[00:38:02] So I get stuck nose dived into the Creek bed, but I was able to get myself out of that one
[00:38:08] by myself.
[00:38:09] Cause I watched way too much mass off road recovery.
[00:38:12] So how did you get unstuck?
[00:38:15] So for, since I was nose dived in, what I ended up doing was I put my Jack under the
[00:38:21] front bumper.
[00:38:22] I lifted up the whole car and then I put stacked a whole bunch of rocks under the tires so that
[00:38:28] when I went that front bumper cleared the sand on the bottom and I could just go for
[00:38:32] it basically.
[00:38:34] Hey, that's good.
[00:38:35] You know, it paid off watching that.
[00:38:37] For sure.
[00:38:38] Yeah.
[00:38:39] So what would you say has been your, like your longest trip mileage wise?
[00:38:45] Like off road or like in total?
[00:38:48] Yeah.
[00:38:48] Just in total.
[00:38:49] In total, it would probably be, um, the one we talked about earlier into the Nevada desert
[00:38:56] because that one's probably about two, two to 250 miles from the house.
[00:39:01] A hundred and fifty miles off road is definitely our longest trip so far.
[00:39:05] Nice.
[00:39:06] Nice.
[00:39:07] Nice.
[00:39:07] So have you ever had to use your extra gas cans?
[00:39:12] Yes.
[00:39:13] A couple of times that trip, I use a total of 15 extra gallons of fuel.
[00:39:19] Wow.
[00:39:19] So I had three, five gallon gas tanks and I used all three of them.
[00:39:24] It's a good thing you had them.
[00:39:26] For sure.
[00:39:27] Uh, yeah.
[00:39:27] Every time I go out, I like to throw at least a gallon or two in one of those containers
[00:39:31] just to make sure, you know, cause I don't want to get stranded with no fuel somewhere.
[00:39:36] Yeah.
[00:39:36] That's good.
[00:39:37] So with all the driving that you've been doing since you've had your car, how many total miles
[00:39:42] do you have on it now?
[00:39:44] Right now?
[00:39:45] I just passed 190,000.
[00:39:49] Now is that though with the, because you said you had to, you blew the first motor or the
[00:39:54] motor that was in it when you bought it.
[00:39:56] Is that 190,000 miles just total on the car or on, on that engine?
[00:40:02] There's 190,000 on the car.
[00:40:05] There's maybe 50,000 miles on the engine.
[00:40:08] Okay.
[00:40:08] That's maybe, I don't really keep track of that one.
[00:40:10] Yeah.
[00:40:11] Too much.
[00:40:11] That's good though.
[00:40:12] I mean, it's, you know, it's not good to blow a motor, but it's good that you have something
[00:40:16] that's a lot newer.
[00:40:17] So now it's going to last even longer.
[00:40:20] For sure.
[00:40:21] Did you do that work yourself?
[00:40:24] No, I took that to a shop because I can do everything except I don't really touch engine
[00:40:30] work and I don't touch transmission work because I feel like if I touch one of those, something's
[00:40:33] going to go wrong.
[00:40:34] Yeah.
[00:40:35] So I took that to some, to a person who specializes in engine swaps and they did that one for me.
[00:40:41] Yeah.
[00:40:41] That would be scary.
[00:40:42] I mean, I see people doing it, but it just, it seemed there's so many different components,
[00:40:48] you know, it'd be like, oh, I forgot a couple of things and it won't start, you know, something
[00:40:52] like that.
[00:40:54] But I saw when you were on one of your posts, you were out and there was, you said that there
[00:40:59] were some Tesla employee employees testing the cyber truck.
[00:41:03] So what was that experience like seeing those out there and how, how did they do out there?
[00:41:09] So that one, that was actually my first ever trip with the, with the Impreza.
[00:41:14] So I had freshly put on the two inch lift and I went out with all those guys out into the
[00:41:20] Tahoe forest.
[00:41:22] And on the very last day, we were on our way to a tiny lake.
[00:41:27] Cause in the middle of the, uh, in the middle of the forest and we passed the cyber trucks,
[00:41:33] like it's the middle of nowhere.
[00:41:34] So we're obviously going pretty fast on the dirt roads, just having fun.
[00:41:37] And we ended up almost hitting these two cyber trucks that are sitting in the middle of the
[00:41:41] road.
[00:41:43] And they ended up going on the same trail as us.
[00:41:46] So they were in front of us and they pulled over.
[00:41:48] Uh, we talked for quite a while about the cyber trucks cause this was about two years
[00:41:53] before they were ever released to the public.
[00:41:55] Oh, so that was the first time anybody had ever actually seen them.
[00:42:00] So it's kind of funny, uh, because at that time I maybe had like five, six inches of ground
[00:42:06] clearance, but overall I was doing better than them off-road.
[00:42:11] Nice.
[00:42:13] So, I mean, they're pretty cool.
[00:42:14] I don't have really anything against them.
[00:42:17] I just would never own an electric car.
[00:42:19] Yeah.
[00:42:19] You mentioned earlier that you, uh, met somebody, you know, the very first person was like at
[00:42:25] a car meet.
[00:42:26] So how many car meets do you end up getting out to?
[00:42:29] Are there like a lot out where you're at?
[00:42:32] So for me, there's like three or four different meets I ended up going to.
[00:42:37] But so the first one I go to is the Subie squad meets, uh, the 209 916.
[00:42:45] That's the area code.
[00:42:46] So we talked about that earlier.
[00:42:47] Um, but then there's a couple more.
[00:42:50] There was one that I got out to.
[00:42:52] So out here, there's a group called software nation.
[00:42:56] Uh, they do.
[00:42:58] Yeah.
[00:42:58] So they did the one meet and I met quite a few people on that meet, which was pretty
[00:43:03] good.
[00:43:03] And then the other one I go to is it's called Folsom cars and coffee or El Dorado Hills cars
[00:43:11] and coffee.
[00:43:12] So people refer to it differently.
[00:43:13] That one is definitely pretty big.
[00:43:15] And I've met quite a bit of super people at that one.
[00:43:19] Nice.
[00:43:20] So have you put your car in any kind of shows before?
[00:43:24] Uh, the only one that I've put it in is Subie Fest.
[00:43:28] Okay.
[00:43:28] And that was in 2023.
[00:43:30] So what was your experience like getting into the show and like being a part of the show?
[00:43:36] Cause I know that I know it's kind of not an easy thing to do because you kind of have
[00:43:41] to be around your car most of the time, especially, you know, so the judges can come by and everything.
[00:43:46] But so what was that experience like for you?
[00:43:49] So I went in 2023 and then I went, uh, this year, but in 2023, I really had like no mods.
[00:43:57] I had a two inch lift.
[00:43:59] I had a four foot awning, which was like super small.
[00:44:03] I don't even know I had that cause it was useless, but I had that.
[00:44:07] I had, uh, just wheels and tires.
[00:44:09] That was it.
[00:44:10] And I made it out there and I really wasn't expecting much cause it's, there's really nothing
[00:44:16] to show off.
[00:44:16] I just look like any other, you know, stock in present, but it was definitely fun in the
[00:44:23] 2023, but I really didn't have anything to show off.
[00:44:26] Uh, but this year was definitely fun cause I had everything on it and people had never
[00:44:32] seen anything like it.
[00:44:33] So I was getting asked so many questions.
[00:44:36] What's like the most bizarre question you've been asked about it?
[00:44:40] I mean, the most asked is why?
[00:44:43] Yeah.
[00:44:44] Most unique probably would just be like, um, why would you lift it that high or why, you
[00:44:52] know, why put so much time into it?
[00:44:55] You know?
[00:44:55] Mm-hmm.
[00:44:56] And I tell everybody the same answer.
[00:44:58] I just want to be as unique as possible.
[00:45:00] You know, do you have people asking you, why didn't you just buy a Crosstrek or a Forester?
[00:45:06] People ask me that almost on a daily basis.
[00:45:10] People ask me, why don't you just buy a Toyota or why don't you buy a Crosstrek or a Forester
[00:45:15] outback?
[00:45:16] And every time I tell them the same thing, I say, I can't really be as unique if I'm
[00:45:21] in a Toyota.
[00:45:22] Cause when I go to like a meet and there's Tacomas, they're kind of all look the same.
[00:45:28] I don't know how to explain it.
[00:45:29] Like there's not much that's different between them.
[00:45:31] And with the lifted Impreza, you kind of like are just different from everything.
[00:45:35] You know what I mean?
[00:45:36] Yeah.
[00:45:36] You're definitely standing out with it.
[00:45:38] The overall build looks cool because it's not something that you see all the time, which
[00:45:43] is, you know, what makes it unique.
[00:45:46] So, you know, it's like taking something and doing something with a car that you're probably
[00:45:53] not really should, should be doing that with, you know, not that you can't, but most people
[00:45:57] probably wouldn't.
[00:45:58] So it's, you know, it looks like you're just having a lot of fun with it, having fun with
[00:46:02] your car, with the build and then having fun, you know, getting out and exploring and meeting
[00:46:09] a lot of people.
[00:46:10] So do you have like a bucket list spot that you would like to get out to?
[00:46:16] I definitely, so I have two, but the number one, which before I ever sell my car, I'm going
[00:46:24] to drive it to Alaska and that's a goal.
[00:46:26] Oh, nice.
[00:46:27] Going to drive it out there, probably take two weeks, but that one's going to take some
[00:46:31] time to get that one worked out.
[00:46:32] But probably closer.
[00:46:35] I really want to get out to Moab.
[00:46:37] Yeah.
[00:46:38] That's an answer I get a lot is going out to Moab because I still need, like I've looked
[00:46:43] up some pictures on it, but I just heard it's like an epic experience going out there and
[00:46:49] it's a lot of fun.
[00:46:49] And it's, it seems like something that people aspire to get out to.
[00:46:54] I know that you, before we started recording, you mentioned going out to Colorado.
[00:46:58] That's Colorado is definitely a good spot to get out to.
[00:47:02] And there's, there's some good trails out there.
[00:47:05] And for me, more than the trails, I just, I love the mountains.
[00:47:09] Just seeing, seeing the mountains is just like heaven to me.
[00:47:14] It's beautiful.
[00:47:15] And I wish we had some closer here.
[00:47:17] So I have to make another mountain trip sometime.
[00:47:21] For sure.
[00:47:23] Yeah.
[00:47:23] I want to do Moab.
[00:47:25] I was, I went to Moab before I started building my car and it was just so cool driving through,
[00:47:32] seeing all the open space.
[00:47:33] Like before I even planned on doing anything off-road, I went through there and it was
[00:47:37] just so cool seeing all of the off-road vehicles, all the open land, all the rocks.
[00:47:42] So I definitely need to get out there and camp.
[00:47:45] Yeah.
[00:47:46] It's, uh, there's, there's, there's just so many good spots to go.
[00:47:50] I know a lot of people have places that are close by and some people a little bit further,
[00:47:55] but for people that are out West are blessed.
[00:48:00] So what would you say about your Impreza best matches your personality?
[00:48:06] I would say probably like how weird and quirky it is.
[00:48:12] Cause I know I am definitely a pretty weird person when it comes to the things that I
[00:48:17] like and do with the vehicle.
[00:48:19] Also, like I have never been off-road until I owned my car.
[00:48:23] So I just like being really adventurous with it too.
[00:48:25] Yeah.
[00:48:27] Going off-road is just, it's even if, you know, like, like I was saying earlier here,
[00:48:33] we don't really have much, there's gravel roads, but just getting off the pavement is just,
[00:48:41] there's something even about that, you know, but being able to go off-road and do things
[00:48:46] that you can't do with most cars is a lot of fun.
[00:48:50] There's just something to it.
[00:48:51] And it's, you know, it's kind of hard to explain like what that feeling is like, but there's
[00:48:57] plenty of people out there to enjoy it with.
[00:49:00] For sure.
[00:49:01] Yeah.
[00:49:02] My, my last trip, I just got back from camping on the beach, which that one was definitely
[00:49:09] really nice.
[00:49:10] Cause there's only one beach in California that you can camp on.
[00:49:15] It's called Usall Beach.
[00:49:17] Okay.
[00:49:17] It's, you can camp anywhere.
[00:49:19] It's kind of like a, like wild camping basically.
[00:49:22] So that one was really nice.
[00:49:24] It was definitely really cold, but it was really nice getting out and actually being able to
[00:49:29] camp on sand.
[00:49:30] Yeah.
[00:49:31] And the other thing that I was just thinking about too, like with an off-road car, there's
[00:49:35] so many more places that you can see because you can get to them.
[00:49:39] You know, you can get up into the mountains and get up to places that you can't with a
[00:49:43] regular car.
[00:49:45] Yeah.
[00:49:46] That's definitely worth it.
[00:49:47] Uh, so if you could describe your Impreza in one word, what would it be?
[00:49:54] I would say, I have to say unique.
[00:49:59] Yeah.
[00:50:00] Cause I, you know, people, I see a lot of people where I know a lot of people who have Impreza
[00:50:05] or WRX builds, but it's kind of like just the way that it's set up.
[00:50:09] I've really never seen anything like it.
[00:50:12] Yeah.
[00:50:13] It has a nice stance too.
[00:50:14] So like just the overall look of how it is, is, is really nice.
[00:50:20] Is there anything that you want to talk about that?
[00:50:24] Like I haven't asked that you want to let people know about either like your journey with
[00:50:29] your car or your car itself?
[00:50:32] I would really say, I mean, the only thing we didn't talk about was how I started the lift.
[00:50:40] So it was kind of funny because at first I started with a one inch lift and then I jumped
[00:50:46] to a two inch lift and then I did three inch and then I did a five inch and then I'm all
[00:50:51] the way at seven where I'm at now.
[00:50:52] So it's kind of like from one, I did all the steps to get there.
[00:50:57] Yeah.
[00:50:58] It's yeah.
[00:51:00] I'm looking at your page right now.
[00:51:01] It's definitely, it looks good with the lift.
[00:51:04] So you did a good job, but yeah, I mean, you've, you've gotten out to a lot of different spots
[00:51:11] it looks like, and it looks like you've done some meetups at Subaru dealerships too, huh?
[00:51:18] Yeah.
[00:51:18] So they like to set up, the squads like to set up a lot of meets at the Subaru dealerships.
[00:51:23] I was just at one on Sunday.
[00:51:26] I haven't posted it yet, but I was simply just at one with all the groups and that one
[00:51:30] was pretty fun.
[00:51:31] Now when y'all go out there, is it just a meetup at the dealership?
[00:51:36] It's, it takes a couple of months because you have to get approval from the dealership.
[00:51:40] Once they approve it, they give you a whole space and it's basically, it's basically a
[00:51:45] whole event because they give out free stuff and we have the meet everybody or anybody
[00:51:50] can come and park up.
[00:51:52] You can set up.
[00:51:53] Oh, nice.
[00:51:54] Nice.
[00:51:55] How often have you done those with the dealerships?
[00:51:59] I've only done three.
[00:52:01] Um, I work weekends, unfortunately, so I can't get too many meets.
[00:52:06] Uh, if it's a big one, I know the squad has a big one.
[00:52:10] We're going to have like food trucks and all sorts of stuff coming out for this next
[00:52:13] one.
[00:52:13] So I'm going to definitely try and get that Saturday off because I like to be at
[00:52:17] the biggest ones.
[00:52:19] Yeah.
[00:52:19] Those are fun.
[00:52:20] Definitely good to get out to those.
[00:52:22] So how would you say that owning your Subaru has changed your life?
[00:52:27] Uh, first thing it's definitely made me run out of money because I don't have any money
[00:52:31] left after owning it.
[00:52:33] That's one of the best answers I've ever heard.
[00:52:37] Oh, that's awesome.
[00:52:38] But I would say, honestly, it's just been a community of people that I've created around
[00:52:43] that I probably never would have met if I owned like a toilet I was talking about in the
[00:52:47] beginning of possibly buying one of those, but if I never would have owned, if I would have
[00:52:52] owned a Toyota, I would have never been able to meet all the people that I know.
[00:52:55] Yeah.
[00:52:56] I mean, there's, there's a community within Toyota, but from so many people that I've
[00:53:00] interviewed that have been in other communities, they say there's just nothing like the Subaru
[00:53:06] community.
[00:53:07] Like we're just different and unique.
[00:53:10] And I know there's like a lot of quirky people and introverted people and weirdos.
[00:53:15] And we all just love being out together and, you know, enjoying this community together
[00:53:20] in these cool cars.
[00:53:23] Yeah.
[00:53:23] I did notice that I was once at, so I don't cope people with lifted Toyotas.
[00:53:28] So I sometimes go to events with them.
[00:53:30] And really, unfortunately, the only thing that I noticed at those is it's a couple of things,
[00:53:35] you know, it's how far can you get out?
[00:53:37] How big is your lift and how much have you broken?
[00:53:40] It's not like, let's go out together and do this trail.
[00:53:43] It's who has the biggest and the best stuff, basically.
[00:53:47] Yeah.
[00:53:47] And that's kind of, you know, it's unfortunate because I've noticed, and I know like you
[00:53:52] talked about it earlier too, with the Subaru community, it's just very welcoming whether
[00:53:56] you've got a crazy modded, you know, whatever it is you're driving or you just bought something
[00:54:04] and you have absolutely nothing on it.
[00:54:05] You know, you, it's intimidating for those people a lot of times that just bought their
[00:54:11] car and they get invited to something and then, you know, get invited to a meet.
[00:54:15] And then you find out that everybody is like excited that you're there.
[00:54:19] They are excited that you even own a Subaru and then you feel at home.
[00:54:24] And that's like such a big deal.
[00:54:27] Pretty sure.
[00:54:27] Yeah.
[00:54:28] That's definitely the greatest part of the Subaru community.
[00:54:30] Cause at this most recent meet, we had all the lifted Subarus, all lowered stuff.
[00:54:35] It was all parked together.
[00:54:36] And then we had one person who rolled up.
[00:54:38] It was, I don't know if we talked about it earlier.
[00:54:41] It was a 95 Forester.
[00:54:44] It had almost 400,000 miles on it.
[00:54:46] Oh my gosh.
[00:54:48] It was super cool.
[00:54:49] Cause he's been all over the place.
[00:54:50] Like he's done more things than any of us could have ever dreamed about in this stock
[00:54:55] force.
[00:54:55] Like it was really cool.
[00:54:57] So we got to talk for a long time about that, probably about an hour, but it was just super
[00:55:01] cool because you know, it like a stock Forester, but still gets out and does everything.
[00:55:06] Yeah.
[00:55:06] I mean, and that's just goes back to any of these off-road Subarus being very, very capable
[00:55:14] going off-road, you know, with not having a lift, not having wheels and tires.
[00:55:19] And I just, they still, I know that they surprise people and that's, that's what's so cool and
[00:55:24] fun about them.
[00:55:26] Yeah.
[00:55:26] My car has definitely surprised me in a lot of instances because you would think a passenger
[00:55:32] car would never do well off-road, but it has definitely, sometimes it even does better
[00:55:38] than the Crosstrek's because of how light I am.
[00:55:41] Oh yeah.
[00:55:41] That's a good point.
[00:55:43] Yeah.
[00:55:43] So do you think you'll always own a Subaru?
[00:55:47] So I think I'm going to own that for as long as I can, maybe until probably if I wreck
[00:55:53] it or if something else goes wrong.
[00:55:56] But I plan on owning that until I buy either like a brand new car or something else like
[00:56:03] that's bigger, but I'd probably own it as a second car, even if I bought it.
[00:56:06] Yeah, that's good.
[00:56:07] Well, here is a little get to know the person behind the account segment, but who is Christopher?
[00:56:15] Well, I am 17 years old.
[00:56:17] So I bought my car when I had just got my license at 16 and I have been doing a full build on
[00:56:25] it since I bought it.
[00:56:27] I, I graduated two years ago actually.
[00:56:30] So I graduated when I was 15, which was pretty nice.
[00:56:33] Yeah.
[00:56:34] But I work full time now, which is pretty cool because I get to go out pretty often.
[00:56:40] Yeah, that's good.
[00:56:41] So where were you born?
[00:56:44] I was born in Sac, in Sacramento.
[00:56:47] Okay.
[00:56:48] And do you have, I mean, I say this, like, do you have a favorite memory from childhood?
[00:56:54] But, you know, I guess it'd be from when you're younger.
[00:56:56] Cause I know some people would be consider you still a child that you're only 17, but,
[00:57:00] you know, I guess, do you have a favorite memory from like when you were younger?
[00:57:05] I do have one that comes to mind.
[00:57:08] Okay.
[00:57:08] Probably when I was, I don't remember, probably, I was probably about six or seven years old.
[00:57:14] And there was one time I got out with my dad and my grandfather and we went shooting in
[00:57:20] the desert, which was pretty nice.
[00:57:22] Yeah.
[00:57:22] Just like shooting at random stuff or y'all have targets with you?
[00:57:27] It was, we set up a bunch of targets, but that was my first time shooting.
[00:57:31] And that was definitely pretty nice.
[00:57:32] They're pretty fun.
[00:57:33] Where were y'all shooting?
[00:57:34] Like what were the guys?
[00:57:37] I don't remember off the top of my head, honestly, cause it was, it was pretty long ago.
[00:57:42] So I just remember we, I think we had about five of them there.
[00:57:49] There was two bigger ones and then there was three handguns, but I do not remember which
[00:57:55] ones they were.
[00:57:55] Okay.
[00:57:56] Yeah.
[00:57:56] I, I grew up around guns.
[00:57:58] My grandparents or my grandpa had a bunch of guns.
[00:58:01] My stepdad has a bunch of guns and we used to like, they were, my grandparents lived, they
[00:58:06] lived, there was a bunch of pasture land in front of their house and it was, you know,
[00:58:12] kind of a secluded area.
[00:58:13] And so we would, he, we would just go out front and just, he would, they had these big
[00:58:18] Folgers coffee cans that they would throw out there and we would just shoot at those.
[00:58:22] But yeah, I haven't shot a gun in a long time, but it was always fun.
[00:58:26] So I totally get that.
[00:58:29] So you, you mentioned that you work full time.
[00:58:31] So what is it you do for your job?
[00:58:34] So I work at a place, there's a place out here.
[00:58:38] It's kind of new.
[00:58:40] I don't know if you guys have them in Texas, but it's called a take five oil change.
[00:58:44] It's an oil change shop.
[00:58:46] There's only a couple of them out here.
[00:58:48] There's only three in all of California, but I work full time.
[00:58:52] Okay.
[00:58:53] So it's very, very funny that you say that because we do have those out here and I work
[00:58:59] for an architectural and engineering firm and we build take fives.
[00:59:06] So we, like, we are basically the consultant for the take five oil, like for the company
[00:59:12] and they have a prototype building.
[00:59:16] And what we do is we're responsible for getting them permitted so that they can be built and
[00:59:21] everything.
[00:59:22] So yes, I'm very familiar with take five.
[00:59:24] I've been, the end of this month will be two years working for this company.
[00:59:28] Oh, wow.
[00:59:29] You may have designed the building that I work in right now.
[00:59:31] No, we only, so they have different consultants that do different states.
[00:59:36] So we do Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma primarily.
[00:59:41] But, but yeah, I mean, we do like our firm does other projects and stuff, but like me and
[00:59:48] my coworker and a couple of other people, we are designated specifically for the take five
[00:59:54] oil changes.
[00:59:55] But yeah, it's a cool concept too.
[00:59:58] That's actually really funny.
[01:00:00] Yeah.
[01:00:01] Yeah.
[01:00:01] As soon as you said that, I was like, oh yeah, I know it.
[01:00:03] I know about it.
[01:00:05] So do you have like a dream job that you would like to do at some point?
[01:00:12] Dream job?
[01:00:12] I kind of, I'm, I want to work on being like a forest ranger or like fish and game wildlife
[01:00:22] ranger, something like that.
[01:00:24] I think that works out in the field.
[01:00:26] Yeah.
[01:00:27] I know a couple of people that are forest rangers and they lived in a house.
[01:00:34] They decided to sell their house or I think they were renting it, but they, I think they
[01:00:39] said they gave away like 90% of their stuff and they bought a van, built a van so that they
[01:00:46] could live in it.
[01:00:47] They've got, you know, kitchen, bathroom, shower, bed, cabinetry, everything.
[01:00:53] And they built it out so that it could be full time gig for them to live in their van.
[01:00:59] And they're like forest rangers six year or six months out of the year.
[01:01:02] And then the rest of the year they just travel and have fun.
[01:01:06] It's actually funny that you say that because I will end up selling my car to buy a van and
[01:01:11] live in it.
[01:01:12] That's the only reason that I would sell my car.
[01:01:15] So that's actually funny you say that.
[01:01:16] Yeah.
[01:01:17] Yeah.
[01:01:17] There you go.
[01:01:18] Yeah.
[01:01:18] I mean, that's, they, they love it and they've been doing it for, I think three years now or
[01:01:24] so.
[01:01:24] Cause I follow them on Instagram and we just connected and their van's really nice too, but yeah,
[01:01:30] that would be a good job.
[01:01:32] So besides getting out in your Subaru and hanging out with other Subaru people, what are some
[01:01:37] of your other hobbies?
[01:01:39] I mean, I don't do too much.
[01:01:41] I do.
[01:01:41] I do.
[01:01:42] I just started liking, I do a lot of hiking now with a couple of my buddies.
[01:01:47] If we're at spots, we'll hike quite a bit, which is pretty nice.
[01:01:51] I do want to get into mountain biking.
[01:01:53] I probably, I'm thinking about buying one right now, but that one will be pretty fun to have
[01:01:58] behind the Subaru when I go out.
[01:02:00] Yeah.
[01:02:01] If, uh, if you, you can talk to Subi runner about that.
[01:02:05] He does a lot of mountain biking.
[01:02:08] Colby Hafner.
[01:02:10] So I had him on, I don't remember which episode he was on, but yeah, he's been, he's been doing
[01:02:15] mountain biking for a while, but it looks fun.
[01:02:17] And, and I think you've got a good spot for it.
[01:02:21] You know, we've got a lot of trails and stuff out there, I'm sure.
[01:02:24] But, uh, so what is something that makes you want to get out of bed every day?
[01:02:29] Honestly, I love driving my car and when it's down, I can't stand not driving it.
[01:02:37] So it would probably be driving my car every day or, you know, every day is a good day.
[01:02:44] Honestly, I never wake up mad.
[01:02:47] I'm always happy to be honest.
[01:02:48] Like I make every day a good day.
[01:02:51] That's good.
[01:02:52] What is something that makes you want to stay in bed?
[01:02:55] Having to go to work every day.
[01:02:57] Yeah, I did.
[01:02:59] I feel that man.
[01:03:00] This, so this morning the power went out and then it started cause I was, so I joined a boot
[01:03:07] camp like class where I go and work out and I usually do it in the mornings.
[01:03:11] And the class that I go to is at six o'clock and I woke up and I was about to, it was about
[01:03:18] five minutes before I was going to leave.
[01:03:20] The power went out cause we had like a really bad storm and it wasn't raining too bad.
[01:03:24] And it's like, you know, a pretty decent walk to get to my car.
[01:03:27] It's not like right outside, but it doesn't take too long to get there.
[01:03:31] But right as, I mean, I literally stepped out onto my porch and it started pouring down
[01:03:36] rain and the wind was blowing really hard.
[01:03:38] And I'm like, I'm going back into bed.
[01:03:41] And so, but then like, you know, the power was out and I'm like, okay, I just, and it
[01:03:46] was still cool from like, cause I had my AC set pretty low.
[01:03:49] So it was still cool.
[01:03:50] I was able to get back to sleep and then the power turned back on.
[01:03:52] And I'm like, it's kind of like, I don't want the power to be on because I want to have,
[01:03:56] I want to be able to use the excuse with work that the power's out and I can't work and
[01:04:00] I can just stay in bed.
[01:04:02] So yeah, I totally get that.
[01:04:04] What would be your best bit of advice to give to someone about anything?
[01:04:10] I would honestly say just, if you have, you want to do something, just pursue it and do
[01:04:16] it.
[01:04:16] Cause if I would have never lifted my Subaru, you know, I'd never be in a space that I
[01:04:23] am now, but that was a lot of work because I had to learn everything myself.
[01:04:27] So, you know, if you're thinking about it and you have a strong feeling about it, just
[01:04:31] do it.
[01:04:32] Cause you'll regret not for sure.
[01:04:34] Yeah.
[01:04:34] I think that's a very good statement and very good advice because I think a lot of people
[01:04:41] have maybe not necessarily a dream, but like an idea of something.
[01:04:45] And then they're like, I really want to do this.
[01:04:48] And maybe you don't know how, but then if you don't figure out how to do it, then later
[01:04:54] on you'd be like, I really wish I would have done that.
[01:04:57] So it's very good advice.
[01:04:59] Yeah.
[01:05:00] For my car, I literally figured out everything.
[01:05:02] You know, I watched every video, read every forum trying to figure out exactly how to do
[01:05:09] it.
[01:05:09] Cause no one that I've ever seen has done that.
[01:05:13] I mean, you see sometimes people do like the top hat lifts or some people will do the
[01:05:17] Forza strut lift, but nobody has combined both together and made it that tall.
[01:05:23] So that was fun figuring out, you know, but the one thing I figured out is.
[01:05:28] I can't have a two inch lift on the front on top of the strut because it breaks all axles.
[01:05:34] So I had, I had to swap that to a one inch on the front and leave the back at two and a
[01:05:40] half.
[01:05:41] So I'm maxed out on the front and the back.
[01:05:43] So if I am an inch taller, I'm going to keep breaking them basically.
[01:05:47] Yeah.
[01:05:47] And you don't want to do that.
[01:05:48] Then you can't enjoy your car.
[01:05:51] During that timeframe.
[01:05:53] I would break them on every trip.
[01:05:56] Wow.
[01:05:57] But the, um, the main reason it was breaking, which I never realized was because they were
[01:06:02] O'Reilly axles instead of OEMs.
[01:06:04] Oh, okay.
[01:06:05] So as soon as I went to OEM, I never had an issue.
[01:06:09] Oh, that's good.
[01:06:10] Yeah.
[01:06:11] Yeah.
[01:06:11] I had my motor mounts were like, I guess, compressed or collapsed is what they were saying.
[01:06:19] And so, uh, an event was coming up and I needed to get them replaced and it was going to be
[01:06:25] like a week and a half before I could get the OEMs.
[01:06:27] And so I had aftermarkets put in and now my engine kind of, it feels like it's rattling whenever
[01:06:34] I'm driving and like at high speeds.
[01:06:37] And I'm like, now I need to go back to the OEMs.
[01:06:40] And, but I just, I didn't want to wait for them because I had two events.
[01:06:43] I had one event coming up at a dealership at Huffine Subaru and I had been invited.
[01:06:47] I had been invited out there and then Subie Fest, Texas was the next weekend.
[01:06:52] And I'm like, you know, and I didn't know that they were going to do it.
[01:06:55] And, you know, it's no, it's no fault of the shop because they, they said, Hey, we can
[01:07:00] get the aftermarket ones.
[01:07:01] And I'm like, okay.
[01:07:02] And now I'm like, can I regret it, but got to go back.
[01:07:06] That would be a piece of advice for anyone listening.
[01:07:09] Buy something that's expensive or make sure it's OEM because they'll probably regret it later
[01:07:13] on.
[01:07:14] Yeah.
[01:07:15] So that's good advice too.
[01:07:17] Hey, thank you so much for taking the time to record.
[01:07:21] And it's cool hearing about your build.
[01:07:23] It's cool seeing it on, on Instagram and for people that get to see it in person, that's
[01:07:28] even better because they get to, you know, hang out with you and watch you do cool stuff
[01:07:33] with a car that was not meant to do what you're doing.
[01:07:36] For sure.
[01:07:37] Yeah.
[01:07:37] I definitely appreciate you having me on.
[01:07:39] This was definitely a fun experience.
[01:07:40] Well, good.
[01:07:41] Well, I hope you enjoy the rest of your night and we'll talk to you later.
[01:07:45] For sure.
[01:07:46] Have a good, have a good.
[01:07:47] See you night also.
[01:07:48] All right.
[01:07:49] Thanks.
[01:07:49] Hello again, everybody.
[01:07:50] And thank you so much for tuning in to another episode of the Subi and You podcast.
[01:07:54] And thank you so much, Christopher, for taking the time to be a guest and share your story
[01:07:59] about your Subaru and about yourself.
[01:08:02] And also talk about the things that you enjoy doing and your, your crazy epic build that
[01:08:08] you have.
[01:08:09] Because it's definitely unique.
[01:08:11] Because it's definitely unique.
[01:08:11] And it's glad to see, glad to see that you're out there doing it and enjoying it and having
[01:08:15] a lot of fun and getting to meet up with a lot of great people.
[01:08:18] So that's really, really cool to see.
[01:08:20] If you're not already doing so, go give him a follow.
[01:08:24] Again, his Instagram handle is overland underscore NA and go check out his build and see where
[01:08:31] all he's going and the places that he's having fun with his Subaru.
[01:08:35] I hope you all have a great week.
[01:08:37] And as I mentioned at the beginning of the podcast, there will not be a Subi Scoop for
[01:08:42] next Monday because I am going to be out of town.
[01:08:45] I'm actually leaving on Saturday.
[01:08:47] So we're going to be gone.
[01:08:48] We're going to enjoy the week.
[01:08:50] We're going to have a good time.
[01:08:51] And I'm just really excited to share this experience with my family and that we were able
[01:08:56] to do this.
[01:08:57] And again, being able to take my son for the first time since he's never been.
[01:09:01] This is actually my daughter's third time going to Disney World.
[01:09:04] Again, we took her when she was five and then she went again in high school and then she
[01:09:09] went for her honeymoon.
[01:09:11] So she's kind of like a veteran and a professional at this pretty much.
[01:09:15] But yeah, we're going to have a good time and I'm looking forward to it.
[01:09:18] So have a great week.
[01:09:20] Talk to you later.
[01:09:21] Get out there and have some fun.
[01:09:22] And here's wishing you an early happy Thanksgiving.
[01:09:26] Much Subi love, Raph.
